I wanna be on the front line, knotted up suit ties
Talking like a headstrong mamma
Got a picture in your wallet
Making me a habit, wearing your vintage t-shirt
Tied ribbons on your top hat
Telling me I'm all that, just like the girls from your hometown
Design by Michael Graves and Alan Lapidus, the Swan and Dolphin may be the ultimate in whimsical architecture. Folklore indicates that the design ideas developed into an entire story to create characters for the hotels. Grave’s had no affinity for the Disney characters so he created two new ones, a Swan and a Dolphin. The Dolphin look like fish and are in inspired by the dolphins found in Italian sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Triton Fountain. There is an important distinction between Bernini’s and Grave’s dolphins; the dolphins in Bernini’s work all have their mouths curving down as if they are frowning while Graves’ dolphins have their mouths curving upward to give the impression that they are smiling.
