Website Design for September 11th Marriott Survivors site - created summer 2005

This was the second modified web site design concept for the home page of a print media and publishing company located in Napier, New Zealand.

At first this looks like a good control: when faced with it, I might want the room to be warmer or cooler. But thinking through the interaction: it's pretty bad.

I'm not sure how the device works. If I set it to warmer, will it get warmer and warmer and warmer until I'm broiling? Unlikely, but it's unclear. Having no meaningful scale (such as absolute temperature) or anchor (such as room temperature) I'm unsure how far to turn it. 45 degrees to the right? Then, if that ends up being too hot, do I get up and set it to "less warmer" or to cooler?

This page is a frameset. [A frameset in 2006!] When I clicked the table of contents link in the top frame navigation I expected it to appear in the bottom frameset, leaving the navigation in tact and letting me scroll the contents and click to any papers I wanted.

But they have other ideas. They want to present the table of contents in a new window, opened by javascript and my browser has such nefarious stuff switched off.
