"Durkheim argues there are four kinds of suicide, egoistic, altruistic, anomic and fatalistic, each conditioned by too strong or weak social regulation (rules and their imposition upon the individual by others) or social integration (positive identification and interaction with others by the individual).

Durkheim’s interest is ‘social solidarity’ under modernity. This is achieved by a balanced combination of integrative and regulative forces which inhibits the creation of suicide-inducing extremes. Modernity’s ‘centrifugal’ forces make it difficult to achieve the balance (‘measure’) of an appropriately socialised life - one which protects individuals from killing themselves.

Using elements from Duccio and Turner (glittering gold, the golden ratio, colour primaries, vortices) this picture (105cm/ 90.5cm, acrylic on board) attempts to express the ambitiousness, multiplicity, ambiguity and urgency of Durkheim’s social theory. Inspired by Durkheim and painted to help me understand his ideas, the question is ‘Does looking at it help progress understanding these ideas?

_______________

"Mae Durkheim yn dadlau bod pedwar math o hunanladdiad: egöistig, allgarol, anomig a thyngedfenyddol, ac effeithir ar bob un gan reoliadau cymdeithasol (rheolau a sut maent yn cael eu gorfodi ar unigolyn gan eraill) rhy gryf neu rhy wan neu integreiddio cymdeithasol (yr unigolyn yn uniaethu ac yn rhyngweithio ag eraill mewn modd cadarnhaol).

Maes diddordeb Durkheim yw ‘undod cymdeithasol’ yn yr oes fodern. Cyflawnir hyn drwy gyfuniad cytbwys o rymoedd cyfunol a rheoleiddiol sy’n atal eithafion a bery hunanladdiad rhag cael eu creu. Mae grymoedd allgyrchol modernedd yn ei gwneud yn anodd cyflawni cydbwysedd (‘mesur’) bywyd sydd wedi’i gymdeithasoli’n briodol - un sy’n diogelu unigolion rhag lladd eu hunain.

Gan ddefnyddio elfennau o Duccio a Turner (aur gloyw, y gymhareb euraidd, prif liwiau, fortecsau) mae’r llun hwn (105cm/ 90.5cm, acrylig ar fwrdd) yn ceisio cyfleu natur uchelgeisiol, lluosedd, amwysedd a brys damcaniaeth gymdeithasol Durkheim. Cafodd ei ysbrydoli gan Durkheim a’i baentio er mwyn fy helpu i ddeall ei syniadau a’r cwestiwn yw ‘A yw edrych arno yn helpu i gynyddu dealltwriaeth o’r syniadau hyn?"

"This project is all about an innovative collaboration between an academic department and a public facing museum, which furthers research and reveals astonishing results, satisfying curiosity and forging a link with a past culture and time and engaging the public!

The object had been in the museum stores described as an ‘unidentifiable mummified package’ of little interest to anyone. Through using the microtomography technique and then 3-D printing the hidden treasure is then revealed as a mummified cobra; an important snake in ancient Egypt.

There are several new aspects to the research. Not only is this a pioneering technique but has revealed Egyptological insights such as the rarely found deposits in the cobras mouth.

The last people who knew what this parcel contained belonged to a distant past and culture and now visitors to the museum can experience the revelation."

"Mae’r prosiect hwn yn ymwneud â chydweithrediad arloesol rhwng adran academaidd ac amgueddfa gyhoeddus sy’n estyn ymchwil ac yn datgelu canlyniadau rhyfeddol, yn bodloni chwilfrydedd, yn creu cyswllt â diwylliant ac oes y gorffennol ac yn ymgysylltu â’r cyhoedd!

Roedd y gwrthrych wedi ei osod yn storfeydd yr amgueddfa ac wedi ei ddisgrifio fel ‘pecyn anhysbys wedi’i fymïo’ na fyddai o ddiddordeb i neb. Drwy ddefnyddio techneg tomograffeg micro ynghyd ag argraffu 3-D, datgelwyd mai cobra wedi’i fymïo oedd y trysor cudd - neidr bwysig yn yr Aifft hynafol.

Mae nifer o agweddau newydd ar yr ymchwil. Yn ogystal â bod yn dechneg arloesol, mae hefyd wedi taflu goleuni newydd ar agweddau ar Eifftoleg, megis y gweddillion nas gwelir yn aml yng ngheg y cobra.

Roedd y bobl olaf a wyddai beth oedd yn y parsel hwn yn perthyn i orffennol a diwylliant pell a bellach gall ymwelwyr â’r amgueddfa rannu’r datguddiad."

"The female Anopheles mosquito, notorious for transmitting malaria, mates only once in her lifetime. Mating alters her physiology and behaviour so radically that she becomes “mating-resistant”.

The underlying chemical triggers and processes are poorly understood, but centre on a tissue called the atrium, which receives and responds to male secretions. Eventually we may be able to mimic those triggers and “trick” virgin mosquitoes into becoming mating-resistant (and hence infertile).

This image was captured with an electron microscope and shows part of an atrium cell after mating, transforming from a secretory role to an absorptive one. A sub-cellular structure called the smooth endoplasmic reticulum has started to collapse and fold in on itself, creating complex and fascinating labyrinthine patterns. I applied a kaleidoscopic effect to the image, and it has become a strange kind of inkblot test. In the intimate folds of these private cells, what do you see?"

“Mae’r mosgito Anoffeles benywaidd, sy’n adnabyddus am drosglwyddo malaria, yn paru ond unwaith yn ystod ei bywyd. Mae paru yn newid ei ffisioleg a’i hymddygiad gymaint nes ei bod yn gwrthwynebu paru.

Nid yw’r achosion a’r prosesau cemegol sydd wrth wraidd hyn wedi eu deall yn iawn, ond maent yn canolbwyntio ar weoedd o’r enw atriwm, sydd yn derbyn ac yn ymateb i secretiadau gwrywaidd. Ymhen amser efallai byddwn yn gallu dynwared yr achosion yma a thwyllo mosgitos gwyryf i wrthwynebu paru (ac o ganlyniad eu gwneud yn anffrwythlon).

Daliwyd y ddelwedd hon gan ficrosgop electronig ac mae’n dangos rhan o gell atriwm ar ôl paru, yn trawsnewid o rôl secretol i rôl amsugnol. Mae ffurf is gellog wedi ei galw’n rhwyll endoplasmig llyfn wedi dechrau dymchwel a phlygu ar ei hun, yn creu patrymau dyrys cymleth a diddorol. Gosodais effaith caleidosgopig ar y ddelwedd, ac o ganlyniad mae hi wedi datblygu’n fath o brawf blotyn inc. Ym mhlygion agos y celloedd preifat hyn, beth ydych chi’n ei weld?”

"The Cu@Swansea Project researched a series of stories about characters who worked at the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks for an audio interpretation trail.

This picture illustrates Judith Scott’s story. ‘As a boy, my Grandfather George Paddison had a near fatal accident on this wheel in 1916. It was a game played by the boys at work to sit on the ropes at the lowest point to ride a few feet on them and then jump off.

My Grandfather failed to jump off the ropes and was taken over the wheel and down into the pit. He was picked up thought to be dead, wrapped in sacking and taken to Swansea Hospital mortuary where he was found to be still alive.

He was literally sewn together down his left side. There was no compensation in those days but he was given a job for life. He worked there for forty years."

"Bu Prosiect Cu@Swansea yn ymchwilio i gyfres o straeon am gymeriadau a weithiai yng Ngweithfeydd Copr yr Hafod-Morfa ar gyfer llwybr dehongli clywedol.

Eglura’r llun hwn stori Judith Scott. ‘Pan oedd yn fachgen, cafodd fy nhad-cu, George Paddison, ddamwain bron yn angheuol ar yr olwyn yma ym 1916. Byddai’r bechgyn a oedd yn gweithio yno’n chwarae gêm lle roeddent yn eistedd ar y rhaffau ar y pwynt isaf er mwyn reidio ychydig o droedfeddi ac wedyn neidio oddi arnynt.

Methodd fy nhad-cu neidio oddi ar y rhaffau a chafodd ei lusgo dros yr olwyn ac i lawr i’r pwll. Cafodd ei godi a thybiwyd ei fod wedi marw, cafodd ei lapio mewn sachliain a’i gludo i gorffdy Ysbyty Abertawe lle sylweddolwyd ei fod yn fyw o hyd.

Yn llythrennol, cafodd ei wnïo ynghyd yr holl ffordd i lawr ei ochr chwith. Doedd dim iawndal yn ystod y cyfnod hwnnw ond cafodd swydd am oes. Gweithiodd yno am ddeugain mlynedd."

Entry for Research as Art - 2015, Highly Commended

"Leaves, fossils, floral wallpaper? I’ve had all these tenuous guesses in the lab. But now and again someone will say, lovely dendrites or how galvanised steel has never looked so interesting!

This is in fact an image of a Zinc Magnesium Aluminium (ZMA) alloy taken using an optical microscope under 70X magnification. To give you a better idea of the scale, the diameter of the exposed area is 1mm.

The dark, leaf-like zinc dendrites are surrounded by a lighter eutectic phase containing all three metals. ZMA coatings are used throughout the world’s automotive and construction industries to protect steel structures from corrosion and there is currently a lot of research going into their continuous improvement.

I count myself lucky to be working on something that is both very important for the steel industry and at the same time makes people, including myself, go 'wow' every day."

"Dail? Ffosilau? Papur wal blodeuog? Rwyf wedi clywed yr holl gynigion ansicr hyn yn y labordy. Ond weithiau bydd rhywun yn dweud “dendritau hyfryd!” neu’n nodi nad yw dur galfanedig erioed wedi edrych mor ddiddorol!

Mewn gwirionedd, dyma lun o aloi Sinc Magnesiwm Alwminiwm (ZMA) a grëwyd gan ddefnyddio microsgop optegol â chwyddiad 70X. Er mwyn rhoi syniad gwell o’r raddfa, diamedr yr arwyneb sydd wedi ei amlygu yw 1mm.

Mae’r dendritau sinc tywyll, sy’n debyg i ddail, wedi eu hamgylchynu gan wedd ewtectig goleuach sy’n cynnwys pob un o’r tri metel. Mae caenau ZMA yn cael eu defnyddio ar draws diwydiannau modurol ac adeiladu’r byd er mwyn amddiffyn adeileddau dur rhag cyrydu ac, ar hyn o bryd, mae llawer o ymchwil yn cael ei gwneud er mwyn sicrhau eu gwelliant cyson.

Rydw i’n ystyried fy mod yn ffodus iawn i fod yn gweithio ar rywbeth sy’n bwysig iawn i’r diwydiant dur ac, ar yr un pryd, yn gwneud i bobl, gan gynnwys fi fy hun, ddweud ‘waw!’ bob dydd."

"Researchers are looking for that hidden gem, that precious nugget of information. More than 50 individual photographs were overlaid to create this image of the Richard Burton Archives as a treasure trove filled with gems of ideas and information to be mined, polished and presented to the world.

The image challenges stereotypes of archives as dusty, inaccessible places. Our state of the art facilities, preserving unique collections, are highlighted with jewel coloured illumination; just as archives throw light on the past.

Archive staff map out the collections through catalogues, helping in the hunt for research riches. This could be about mining accidents in the South Wales Coalfield, copper smelting for global trade, or the purchase of diamonds in ‘The Richard Burton Diaries’. Our collections have multi-disciplinary potential and we work with researchers to ensure that these priceless items can add to the wealth of knowledge."

"Mae ymchwilwyr yn chwilio am drysor cudd, y darn bach gwerthfawr hwnnw o wybodaeth. Cafodd dros 50 o ffotograffau unigol eu troslunio i greu’r ddelwedd hon o Archifau Richard Burton fel trysorfa sy’n llawn perlau o syniadau a gwybodaeth i bori drwyddynt, eu gwarchod, eu gloywi a’u cyflwyno i’r byd.

Mae’r ddelwedd yn herio’r stereoteip o archifau fel lleoedd llychlyd ac anhygyrch. Mae ein cyfleusterau o’r radd flaenaf sy’n diogelu casgliadau unigryw, wedi eu goleuo gan olau lliw gemau; yn union fel y mae archifau yn taflu golau ar y gorffennol.

Mae staff yr archif yn mapio’r casgliadau drwy gatalogau, gan helpu yn yr helfa am drysor ymchwil. Gallai hyn ymwneud â damweiniau mwyngloddio ym Maes Glo De Cymru, smeltio copr ar gyfer masnach fyd-eang neu brynu diemwntau yn ‘Nyddiaduron Richard Burton’. Mae gan ein casgliadau botensial amlddisgyblaethol ac rydym yn cydweithio ag ymchwilwyr i sicrhau bod yr eitemau amhrisiadwy hyn yn gallu cyfrannu at y cyfoeth o wybodaeth."

"Lack of success in research can be demoralising but sometimes it can result in unforeseen success.

While looking into functional materials for the European Space Agency, a novel method was undertaken to produce a specific Ferrosilicon product from the gas phase.

The image shows an example of preferential crystalline growth in the gas phase, taken using a Scanning Electron Microscope. These highly organised crystals were formed with lengths of around 100 microns square."

Wrth ymchwilio i ddeunyddiau gweithredol ar gyfer yr Asiantaeth Ofod Ewropeaidd, defnyddiwyd dull newydd er mwyn creu cynnyrch Fferosilicon penodol o’r wedd nwy.

Crëwyd y ddelwedd hon gan ddefnyddio Microsgop Sganio Electron ac mae’n dangos enghraifft o dwf crisialaidd ffafriol yn ystod y wedd nwy. Ffurfiwyd y crisialau trefnus dros ben hyn tua 100 o ficronau sgwâr ar eu hyd."

"This is a photograph of some of the discarded perovskite solar cells in the characterisation lab. They were once high performing but have now degraded as indicated by the colour change from brown to orange and yellow.

Due to the cheap materials and ease of processing perovskite solar cells have the potential to be a much cheaper photovoltaic technology than established ones such as silicon. However as shown here the big challenge is preventing their degradation. Therefore research into the stability and lifetime of perovskite solar cells is extremely important."

____________

"Dyma ffotograff o rai o’r celloedd solar pevroskite sydd wedi cael eu taflu o’r neilltu yn y labordy nodweddu. Roeddent unwaith yn perfformio’n dda ond nawr maent wedi dirywio sy’n amlwg o’r newid yn eu lliw, o frown i oren a melyn.

O ganlyniad i’r deunyddiau rhad a rhwyddineb eu prosesu mae gan gelloedd solar pevroskite y potensial i fod yn dechnoleg ffotofoltäig rhatach na rhai safonol megis silicon. Fodd bynnag, fel y dangosir yma, y brif her yw eu hatal rhag dirywio. Felly, mae ymchwil i sefydlogrwydd a hyd oes celloedd solar ‘perovskite’ yn hynod bwysig."

"Traditionally masks are used to cover or express an emotion however these radiotherapy masks, pictured in Singleton Hospital, are moulded to individual cancer patients to immobilise their head and neck as they receive complex radiotherapy treatments to millimetre accuracy. I was fascinated by the thoughts and emotions that these masks capture during what is often the most difficult time in our patient’s lives.

The masks also overlook the radiotherapy suite where patients receive treatment and which is home to various clinical studies. In particular, Swansea University in partnership with the South West Wales Cancer Centre in Singleton Hospital are part of the world leading De-ESCALaTE HPV study which is aiming to reduce the dose of toxic therapy in head and neck cancer related to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)."

Roedd diddordeb gennyf yn y meddyliau a’r teimladau y mae’r masgiau yma’n eu dal yn ystod y cyfnod mwyaf anodd ym mywydau ein cleifion.

Mae’r masgiau hefyd yn edrych dros yr ystafell radiotherapi lle dderbynia’r cleifion driniaeth ac sydd yn gartref i astudiaethau clinigol amrywiol. Yn benodol, mae Prifysgol Abertawe mewn partneriaeth â Chanolfan Ganser De Orllewin Cymru, sydd wedi ei lleoli yn Ysbyty Singleton, yn rhan o astudiaeth blaenllaw’r byd De-ESCATaTE HPV sydd â’r bwriad o leihau dogn therapy gwenwynig mewn canser pen a gwddf sydd yn gysylltiedig i’r Feirws Papiloma Dynol (HPV)."

"In July, 2014, I joined 9 scientists on board this intrepid little research vessel, Pelagia. We voyaged to the Norwegian Sea, collecting evidence of giant ancient landslides, some 1-3 km beneath us.

Strangely, you quickly acclimatise to the ritualistic existence aboard a ship, as well as not seeing darkness, or land, for weeks on end. When I took the photo that is captured in this acrylic painting, we had been at sea for just over two weeks. As I mused out to sea, I felt an immense sense of isolation; a wonderment at how vast and dynamic, yet robust, the environment is. Has anyone ever inhabited this spot before? That ripple, when it disappears, will another form in the same way ever again? Yet, at the dusk of civilisation, the sun will nearly not set, just as that night in July 2014."

This work honours the crew of RV Pelagia.

"From dialing telephones to using calculators, interaction with numbers form a part of many of our daily activities. This photo is the coast guard telephone at Three Cliffs Bay in the Gower.

The contextual instructions all tell the user to dial 999 but the user interface does not allow the execution of the task. Consequently, users are setup to waste valuable time while attempting to operate a walk-up-and-use device in a potentially time critical context.

Numbers are also widely used when setting up drug dose information on medical devices such as infusion pumps where the cost of error has a direct impact on patient."

Mae’r holl gyfarwyddiadau cyd-destunol yn dweud wrth y defnyddiwr i ddeialu 999 ond nid yw’r rhyngwyneb defnyddiwr yn galluogi cyflawni’r dasg. Defnyddir rhifau yn helaeth wrth greu gwybodaeth dogni cyffuriau ar ddyfeisiau meddygol megis pympiau hydreiddio lle mae’r gost o gamgymeriad yn effeithio’n uniongyrchol ar glaf."
