The first time i tried chasing these guys i found it really challenging being able to capture them in a decent picture.
Now its a bit of a obsession that takes over every time i see one and everything else fades into the back ground until they move on.
This is a very freshly hatched male and one of the most complete butterflies of this species that i have seen for a long time.
Please share. :)
Ulysses Butterfly. Papilio ulysses
The female of the species is different from the male in that she has little crescents of blue in the back, upside sections of her hindwings, where there is only black for males. When the butterfly is perched the intense blue of its wings is hidden by the plainer brown under side of its wings, helping it to blend in with its surroundings. When in flight, the butterfly can be seen hundreds of metres away as sudden bright blue flashes. Males are strongly attracted to the colour blue, including blue objects which are sometimes mistaken for females.
The Ulysses butterfly typically has a wingspan of about 14 cm (5.5 in), but depending on subspecies has some variations in size.

We have the vine planted in a few spots around our yard. However the green ants give us a run for our money. Its a race between us and the ants to get the caterpillars off the vine. If we are a bit slow they clean them out in no time.
Cairns Birdwing. Ornithoptera euphorion
Both sexes support their weight when feeding at flowers by rapidly fluttering their wings. Males occasionally compete for flowers with other nectarivores, such as small birds, and usually succeed at driving them off by aggressively flying towards them.
They have a rather short life span as a butterfly only lasting four to five weeks.
Australia's largest endemic butterfly species. The wingspan can be up to 15 cm (5.9 in) in females, and 12.5 cm (4.9 in) in males.
There was a spectacular and rare genetic mutation of this butterfly, where single aberrant female produced less than 40 aberrant progeny. The females were pale instead of dark, and the males were golden instead of green. Facebook Page: P&M Wildlife and Nature Photography
