More downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp. There was a huge web between my room and the mess area and I just had to get some shots of its occupants.
Nephila is a genus of araneomorph spiders noted for the impressive webs they weave. Nephila consists of numerous species found in warmer regions around the world, although some species formerly included in the genus have been moved to Trichonephila. They are commonly called golden silk orb-weavers, golden orb-weavers, giant wood spiders, or banana spiders.

“The hummingbird hawk-moth” is a species of hawk moth found across temperate regions of Eurasia. The species is named for its similarity to hummingbirds, as they feed on the nectar of tube-shaped flowers using their long proboscis while hovering in the air; this resemblance is an example of convergent evolution.

Lynx Spider, the wait and watch player of ambush.
Most of them have large spiny bristles on their legs and in many species the bristles form almost a basket-like structure that may assist in confining the prey that they grasp, and protect the spider from its struggles. Most Oxyopes and Hamataliwa species are small to medium in size; they tend to be drab ambush hunters; depending to some extent on the season, some occupy flowers, ambushing pollinating insects. In this they resemble the crab spiders (Thomisidae) in behaviour. Others crouch in wait, camouflaged on plant stalks or bark.
Lynx spiders, in spite of being largely ambush hunters, are very speedy runners and leapers, alert and with good vision.

More downtime at Laikipia Wilderness River camp. This time it was a coffee break down by the river when I spotted a few dragonflies and butterflies on a nice green bush. This one decided to perch itself on the uppermost tip of a shooting branch.
Not 100% sure what it is, google searches have it as a Red Groundling (Brachythemis lacustris).

A funnel-web spider of the family Agelenidae sitting in its funnel-shaped web.
The Agelenidae are a large family of spiders in the suborder Araneomorphae. Well-known examples include the common "grass spiders" of the genus Agelenopsis. Nearly all Agelenidae are harmless to humans, but the bite of the hobo spider (Eratigena agrestis) may be medically significant, and some evidence suggests it might cause necrotic lesions, but the matter remains subject to debate.The most widely accepted common name for members of the family is funnel weaver.

🇪🇸 Un pequeño macho de Saitis barbipes alimentándose de una mosca de la fruta. En esta especie llama mucho la atención ese par de patas anaranjadas y oscuras, más vistosas que el resto, que en los machos participa en sus exhibiciones de cortejo.
En la foto se ve bien el contraste entre la escena de caza y esas patas tan ornamentadas, un detalle que no aparece igual en todas las saltarinas y que hace que esta especie sea especialmente reconocible ️
🇬🇧 A small male Saitis barbipes feeding on a fruit fly. One of the most striking features of this species is that orange and dark pair of legs, much more ornamented than the others, which males use as part of their courtship displays.
The image shows a clear contrast between the hunting scene and those highly distinctive legs, a feature that is not present in the same way across all jumping spiders ️

On the left, a Camponotus sp. of Spanish origin; on the right, Polyrhachis diotima, a spiny ant from Indonesia. The smaller one is not a young ant: they are different genera within Formicidae.
Many Camponotus species have major workers with oversized heads and powerful mandibles, while Polyrhachis shows a more compact, textured and spiny body.

Se alimentan de esporas, micelios y otros tejidos fúngicos, y muchas especies están adaptadas para confundirse con su entorno natural. En esta toma destacan sus bandas claras y oscuras, que le permiten camuflarse perfectamente sobre cortezas cubiertas de líquenes. 🌿
📖 Esta familia se caracteriza por tener antenas rectas, ojos grandes y una cabeza orientada hacia abajo. El mimetismo visual es frecuente como mecanismo defensivo, y este ejemplar es una excelente muestra de ello. 🇬🇧 A 7 mm beetle carrying a metallic rainbow on its back — not just to shine, but possibly to disappear.
Anthaxia salicis belongs to the Buprestidae, the jewel beetles, a family famous for its metallic colours. In this first view, the insect is still complete enough to read as a beetle, but the surface already starts to reveal another world: blue, green, gold, red, magenta, tiny hairs and a cuticle full of texture ✨
This is the first image of a small series exploring this beetle from the full body to its finest surface details.
In jewel beetles, iridescence is more than decoration. As the colours shift with light and angle, they can help break the outline of the body and make the insect harder for visual predators to read.
