Flies (Diptera) are among the most widespread insects on the planet. They play a vital role in ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and even as part of the food chain. The fly's eyes, seen in this image, are called compound eyes. They consist of thousands of tiny lenses (ommatidia), allowing the fly to see in multiple directions simultaneously and respond instantly to movement.
Notice the metallic sheen of the wings and the chitinous exoskeleton that protects the insect's body. These features not only provide protection but also help with thermoregulation. Another interesting detail is the tiny hairs on the fly's body, which sense even the slightest air currents and help the fly navigate its environment.
Did you know that termites discard their wings to show that they have found a mate? During swarming seasons, sexually mature termites with wings leave their nest because of overcrowding or lack of sufficient food. Once the male locates a female he likes, they break off their wings, symbolizing that they are a couple.
Ants and termites are enemies! Ants are the number one predators and competition for termites. Occasionally, termite and ant colonies that are near each other will go to war over territory and access to food.
