Mayfly - These beautiful insects are said to live for just one day.

They live for up to 2 years at the bottom of rivers and streams before emerging in this winged state where some species live one day others several days and then, after mating, they die.

So far this year far fewer than normal are emerging, possibly because the young nymphs living in the rivers suffered during our severe winter storms and flooding earlier in the year.

I found this little beauty sitting on its web in our side garden last summer.

I know many have strong reactions to spiders, but if we are able to get past those fears, we can appreciate that many of them are colorful and amazing in their own right.

This is the third species in my Insect Art series...

The Green Man by Lemon~art

The Green Man is an ancient symbol of rebirth - representations are found all round the world. Statues and carvings more usually have leaves or other vegetation growing out of the mouth or eyes.

This butterfly is very battered and worn and has seen better times but she was still happily flying around in the sunshine. Red Admirals are mainly migrants and fly here from Central Europe in May or June (so it is not surprising that they are a bit tatty by the time they get here). These breed and give rise to the next generation of adults with a peak of emergence between mid-August and early October. (There are a few which now breed in southern England but most seen in the summer are migrants)

Who knew that a fly could look so good?

Well, maybe not the fly itself, but in a colorful garden setting like this and wrapped in a pretty frame, I think the whole package passes as beautiful :)

I may make this into a small series. Or not. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Depends on how creative I feel.

I photographed this fly in our front garden last July, perched on Catmint florets and with the golden flowers of Coreopsis 'Zagreb' in the background.
