The Industrial Revolution bought lots of innovation to many sectors. The large steam driven flywheels, traction engines and trains have given way to electrified trains and then individual cars. The size of components have shrunk and hopefully, with modern electric cars fewer components and greater efficiency promises.
During the various stages of the Industrial Revolution there were people who severely resisted change. We are in another moment at this time both politically and socially. Unfortunately, nostalgia may not help meet the challenges ahead. History, though can bring interesting perspectives.

This "LED" Water Tower Christmas Tree may not look special, but it's truly an innovative piece of technology developed by the City of Manor. It has a mechanical winch inside of the pedestal that raises and lowers the lights so city employees can make adjustments without the need of a lift-truck. This is yet another example of the power of innovation on a shoestring budget.

In this photo, if you look behind the forks and on the bumper. You will see Curotto Cans/Heils new forks stabilization that prevents the arms on the Heil from shaking left and right when the Curotto Can arm is moving. More innovation from The Curotto Can/Heil.

These 8 locomotives of the 501 to 508 series were manufactured by Henschel & Sohn, and entered the service of the Portuguese Railways Company in 1924. They were also known as Pacific locomotives. After their arrival, they were immediately assigned to the fast trains from Rossio to Vila Nova de Gaia, but could not cross to Porto through the D. Maria Pia Bridge due to their high weight per axle. Throughout the trip between Rossio and Gaia, they only needed to be refilled with water once in Albergaria dos Doze. Despite the innovation, these locomotives were not able to haul long trains during the climb between Caxarias and Albergaria dos Doze, reason why two locomotives were necessary. In 1939, the Pacific were assigned to haul several special trains to try out the new Budd metallic carriages, which had arrived in Portugal that year. On April 7 1939 a train formed by locomotive 501 and three carriages made the journey from Gaia to Campolide in 3 hours and 9 minutes, with stops at Pampilhosa, Albergaria dos Doze and Entroncamento, with top speeds of 140 to 145 km/h near Ovar. In 1940 this locomotive in the photograph, CP 503, was re-introduced with a new design, together with several Budd carriages, in the Portuguese World Exhibition, forming the train Flecha de Prata (meaning silver arrow due to the silver color of the Budd carriages), which was then the main brand image of the Portuguese railways. By 1948, the 1500 series diesel locomotives (flic.kr/p/28eWJXx) were introduced and gradually replaced the Pacific on fast trains. The Pacific were then moved to other lines, such as the Oeste line.

INNOVATION
One might be forgiven in thinking that diesel and electric traction first appeared on Britain's railways in the 1950s, after all it was the Modernisation Plan of 1955 which ushered in the era of diesel multiple units (D.M.Us.) along with diesel and electric locomotives which were intended to replace steam. But one would be wrong. Even before World War Two the Southern Railway (S.R.) had electrified some of its system in South-East England such that even the famous Brighton Belle was electric powered from 1933. The London Midland and Scottish Railway (L.M.S.) had diesel shunters in the 1930s and in 1947, in one of its last acts before nationalisation, introduced two diesel express locomotives numbered 10000 and 10001
The Great Western Railway (G.W.R.) began experimenting with diesel railcars in 1933 some of which found their way onto the West Midlands system. Originally resplendent in G.W.R. colours of 'Chocolate and Cream' they were, following nationalisation, converted to carmine (red) and cream. Unit W14W, shown here at Dudley, will have travelled from Birmingham Snow Hill via the main Wolverhampton Low Level line before diverging at Swan Village. Such units also used to run along the entire length of the Seven Valley line from Shrewsbury to Kidderminster before, in truncated form it become a heritage railway. Strange perhaps that they had all gone by the time dieselization had got under way in earnest. They were ahead of their time. They didn’t need to be shunted to the opposite end of a set of coaches to make a return trip or turned on a turntable, the driver just got off his cab at one end of the unit and drove back from the cab at the other end. So simple,why wasn't it thought of before? It was, in 1933.

Heavy Maintenance and Construction
INNOVATION is a DP2 vessel which lays the foundations for offshore wind farm installations. With a 1,500 ton crane and load capacity of up to 8,000 tons, INNOVATION enables loading and installation of 6 MW+ wind turbines with overall heights of more than 120m as well as heavy foundations in water depths of up to 65m (with leg extensions).
