Back in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, computers made their printout with dot-matrix printers - so called because each letter is printed with a rectangular grid (matrix) of metal needles. When the needles press against an inked ribbon, you get a pattern of dots making up the different letters, numbers, and symbols. The big advantage of this is that you can (theoretically) print any typeface (font) with only one small matrix of needles. The more needles, the better the print quality - although you can almost always see the dots. Letter-quality (LQ) and near letter quality (NLQ) printers supposedly had so many needles that the dots were all but invisible.
It's getting harder to find "preserved examples" of dot matrix print technology now, so I thought I'd better upload this old train ticket (from 2000) while I still could!

Mag een print uit de computer grafiek zijn?

Beste kunstvrienden, ter gelegenheid van de Maand van de Grafiek wil ik graag even ingaan op wat grafiek is en waarom wij juist deze kunstenaars hebben gevraagd hun werk hier te presenteren.
Kunstdrukwerk wordt grafiek genoemd. Originele grafiek wordt al eeuwen erkend als kunstzinnig medium, dat wil zeggen zolang de prent het artistieke doel is. En niet om een eerder gemaakte tekening of schilderij in oplage te reproduceren. Zoals de etsen van Rembrandt, de litho’s van Toulouse-Lautrec en de zeefdrukken van Andy Warhol originelen zijn, geen reproducties.
Kenmerken van ambachtelijke grafische technieken zijn de oplage, de drukgangen en de drukvorm.
De oplage kan klein zijn of groot, of zelfs maar uit één enkel exemplaar bestaan. In een oplage kunnen alle prenten exact gelijk zijn, maar dat hoeft niet.
Het aantal drukgangen is ook niet vastgelegd, een prent kan in één laag zijn gedrukt of in vele lagen (drukgangen) over elkaar.
Van deze eigenschappen valt dus niet veel méér te zeggen dan dat in de aanvang de mogelijkheid bestaat tot het vervaardigen van een oplage in meerdere drukgangen.
Om te kunnen drukken is een drukvorm nodig. Als diepdruk kennen we de gravure en de ets, waarbij de drukvorm van metaal is en de afbeelding uitgestoken is of met een zuur uitgebeten. De daarbij ontstane putjes en groeven worden met inkt gevuld dat onder hoge druk op papier geperst wordt. Bij hoogdruk wordt de inkt op de oppervlakte van de drukvorm uitgerold. Voorbeelden zijn hout- en linosnede, stempelen en de traditionele boekdruk met loden letters. Lithografie en offset zijn vlakdruk-technieken. Tenslotte kunnen we doordrukken maken met sjablonen, door middel van zeefdruk en met de stencilmachine.
Voor al deze druktechnieken is de drukvorm de basis. Zonder drukvorm is er geen prent. De drukvorm ís het origineel.
En aan de basis van de drukvorm ligt de tekening.
Hans Kleinsman tekent ‘zonder handen’. Hij maakt tekeningen door met de computer beelden te genereren uit berekeningen. Die stuurt hij niet naar de printer, maar brengt hij direct over op papier met een ballpoint in een plotter, of met een vet litho-potlood op een grote lithosteen, waarna hij de steen afdrukt in meerdere drukgangen. Het resultaat is een beweeglijk, bijna onscherp aandoend beeld dat bestaat uit miljoenen stipjes rood, geel en blauw die in het oog van de beschouwer moeiteloos gemengd worden tot alle mogelijke tussentinten.
In het verleden hebben alle druktechnieken op hun tijd de erkenning als kunstzinnig medium moeten bevechten. Want was de ets niet de goedkope namaak- gravure van de zeventiende eeuw? Was lithografie in de negentiende eeuw niet bij uitstek een medium voor reclame-affiches, evenals zeefdruk in de twintigste? Ook de fotografie vond men lange tijd van minder artistieke waarde, vergeleken met de schilderkunst. Foto’s zijn ‘slechts’ een weergave van de zichtbare werkelijkheid, terwijl schilderijen de expressie van de maker kunnen weergeven. Bovendien is een schilderij uniek en een foto reproduceerbaar.
Al in 1936 beschreef Walter Benjamin dit fenomeen in Het kunstwerk in het tijdperk van zijn technische reproduceerbaarheid.
Verzamelaars lieten de fotografie als kunstvorm nog lang links liggen. Inmiddels zijn op alle grote kunstbeurzen foto’s te koop van astronomische afmetingen voor dito prijzen.
Elk nieuw medium deelt deze geschiedenis.
Van wantrouwen en afwijzing van de gevestigde orde tot de omarming door een verse groep liefhebbers, die later rijpt tot een nieuwe gevestigde orde.
Plotten en printen zijn de nieuwe druktechnieken. De plotter veroverde de tekenkamer; de scanner, laser- en inkjetprinter veroveren het thuiskantoor en de hobbyruimte.
Kunstenaars maken natuurlijk ook gebruik van deze middelen en worden uitvinders van nieuwe toepassingen. Grafische kunstenaars gebruiken printer en plotter zoals ze vroeger de drukpers gebruikten. Ze gebruiken computersoftware zoals ze vroeger de tekenstift hanteerden of het burijn, of de zuurkast. De computer kan een atelier zijn, de programma’s een gereedschapskist voor kunstenaars.
Kunstenaars werken met hun zintuigen, hun hersenen en hun handen. Zien en voelen, denken en creëren. Hun specialiteit is de mogelijkheid de waarneming te verbeelden op zo’n manier dat wij, het publiek, verrast worden. Soms voelen we ons er ongemakkelijk bij, want het is niet vanzelfsprekend wat we zien. We hebben vragen en twijfels en ook bewondering voor de kracht van deze beelden. Met welke middelen ze ook zijn gemaakt.
Rest nog de vraag: kunnen we een print grafiek noemen?
Er is de mogelijkheid tot een oplage. Carrie maakt er (meestal) maar één. Toch is een heel grote oplage niet onmogelijk. Je kunt vinden dat een prent die in potentie een oneindige oplage heeft, geen grote waarde heeft, want niet schaars is. Dit heeft de computergrafiek gemeen met de fotografie. Maar hebben we het dan over artistieke of over economische waar(he)de(n)?
Er is geen fysieke tekening of drukvorm in de computer, je kunt hem niet vastpakken. De drukvorm is een in digitale code opgeslagen bestand en bestaat als zodanig. In de metadata van het bestand zijn de maker, de ontstaansgeschiedenis en het copyright opgeslagen en kunnen extra gegevens worden bewaard, zodat het artistiek eigendom vastgelegd is, ook al is het bestand op verschillende plaatsen te vinden.
Printers en plotters zijn grafische middelen, media. Ze kunnen niet zonder iemand die er iets mee doet. Zoals een marterharen penseel niet vanzelf tot een kunstwerk leidt, doet een goede printer of een plotter dat ook niet. Elke printer (en elke computer) heeft een kunstenaar nodig om er kunst uit te krijgen. Zoals een Hans Kleinsman, of een Carrie Meijer. In de prenten van Carrie zie ik monumentjes van evenwicht in kleur en vorm. Alleen Carrie kan ze zo maken. Het werk van Hans moet je ervaren: loop er eens naartoe, ga er met je neus bovenop staan en blijf kijken terwijl je weer een stap achteruit doet.
