Stonechat (full Frame)

I have to say I much prefer project work to legging it for different species in one day. When I was a kid I did not have binoculars (too expensive) so getting close to birds required a bit of ingenuity as well as patience (I lived on the edge of the fens). So, when I targeted a species I'd keep with it. I decided this year to spend time with a family of Stonechats then later Black Redstarts. The male was accommodating but the female was a 30 yarder. Getting near for photos was impossible with a direct approach. After a day I had the female within 3 feet of me and no hide. I did not use the birders guide to fieldcraft. If I had, I'd never got near! I did not use bait either although once I had the birds trust I did use mealworms for the project. I watched this family bring up chicks and out of 5 territories my pair was the only pair successful with a first brood. I personally get more out of seeing birds very close up. Watching their lives unfold...seeing their daily trials and their individual personalities as they react to you. Such things you will not find in books and sometimes you might discover the books wrong....it's discovering things for yourself and earning trust that is so satisfying....the bonus is you get great pictures some of a kind you do not normally see. If I have not bored you by now, I rarely do portrait mode shots hand held (I am too unsteady, hand ergonomics not suited). I have always secretly wanted to have a front cover image printed in the 'British Birds' magazine. The picture here is full frame and done in the style used by 'British Birds' and it is what I had in mind when I composed and took the image. I am not sure they would accept a female bird for a front cover. The image is not without fault. We shall see.

Our local community gardens have been around for many years so the plots there have evolved their own sense of place and style - which often transcend whomever the stewarding gardener might be. Some of the most wonderful leftover artifacts are the "fences" which are, without a doubt, some of the most unique, artistic and ingenious fences I've ever seen.

Happy Fence Friday, my friends! Have an ingeniously inspiring weekend. :)

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Salalah's plains lies Ain Razat, a natural spring whispering tales of a bygone era. This historical landmark, boasting a network of ancient falaj irrigation channels and remnants of a bygone settlement, offers a glimpse into the ingenuity and perseverance of Oman past inhabitants. Explore the serene setting, learn about the falaj system that sustained life in the region, and be transported back in time as you wander through the ruins. (httourism.com)

This beautiful location is the backdrop to a popular park with abundant natural water, cliffs and trails, a children's playground and even a formal rose garden. We came twice, once in the evening to look for owls and then next morning to get a better look at the owl and the green pigeon. A fabulous location for birding and for recharging.

The clematis vine has become a symbol of mental strength and ingenuity because of its ability to climb up and around obstacles, twisting and spreading to reach lofty heights.

The nests these tiny hummingbirds build are amazing. They are roughly the size of a golf ball. You couldn't duplicate it with your hands and they do it all with their beak. True works of art.

A female Eastern Bluebird. Bluebird nest boxes in Carden Alvar are all against the fences; most often the birds land on a rusty fence wire before entering the nest. Some enterprising photographers decided to put up a broken piece of branch around the nest box to give the birds a more natural looking perch - only to forget about the cable ties. The New Chemistry & Ingenuity Buildings at the Jubilee Campus Nottingham!

"Ingenuity quotient" è una definizione che trovai su Popular Science nel primo dopoguerra, mi colpì la corrispondenza con il comportamento di noi napoletani che secolarmente troviamo stratagemmi di sopravvivenza.

Qualche anno dopo mi capitò per mano un libretto di un filosofo tedesco del novecento dal titolo "La filosofia del rotto "dove ritrovai esilaranti aneddoti sul comportamento dei napoletani.

Amish cooks would clean out their Mason jars, then turn them upside down and put them on fence posts around their gardens. The intense summer sun would generate enough heat inside the jars that the fence posts would actually char — perfectly sanitizing the jars. The Avro Lancaster, one of the most iconic heavy bombers of World War II, played a pivotal role in the Allied strategic bombing campaign. Renowned for its four-engine power, large payload capacity, and versatility, the Lancaster carried out night raids over Europe, targeting industrial sites, infrastructure, and military installations. Its combination of engineering ingenuity and crew skill made it a symbol of resilience and precision in aerial warfare. This aircraft exemplifies the innovation, teamwork, and bravery that defined the RAF’s bomber force during the 1940s.

People in the far north are quite clever when it comes to solving daily problems that might arise.

When your source of water is located high on the mountain side, and your home or business is well below - you simply make your own water pipeline. Of course this only solves the problem in the summer, as your jerry-rigged pipeline will freeze solid in the winter. In winter you will be digging a hole in the ice of the nearest body of water, filling containers, and hauling them home. I never said that life in the far north was easy. 😄

"Calin Rovinescu" was departing, just before sunset, as ACA720 (Air Canada) to New York (LaGuardia), New York.

Serial number 55067 was the first A220-300 to join Air Canada's fleet. On November 21, 2025, it received the 40th of the 65 units that it had ordered.

Although the BD-500 family was designed and developed by Bombardier, it has become a valuable addition to the Airbus commercial product line.

The couple probably wanted a long-exposure shot of The Parkway but had no tripod. So he set it on the steps to steady the camera.

A springy tree may not look as polished as a fully built catapult, but the function is the same.

When photographing this modern building in the late afternoon, I wanted to transcend simple architectural documentation to reveal the almost mythical dimension that our urban constructions can take on as light fades. By adopting a radically vertical perspective, I sought to capture that vertiginous sensation sometimes felt when looking up toward the summits of our cities.

The black and white treatment and chosen exposure transformed the twilight sky into this deep black - a deliberate decision to completely isolate this structure in negative space, like a monolith cutting against the evening canvas. The two lampposts, which I intentionally included in the composition, create an almost theatrical staging, their light beams beginning to come alive at this transitional hour.

This monochromatic approach allowed me to accentuate contrasts and reduce the architecture to its purest geometric expression - a play of shadows and light, solids and voids. What fascinates me in this type of architectural photography is the transformation of an everyday functional space into a powerful, almost dreamlike visual abstraction.

Through this image, I wanted to express both the formal beauty of contemporary architecture and that ambivalence we can feel when faced with these imposing structures - between admiration for human ingenuity and a certain meditation on our relationship with these modern cathedrals that define our urban horizons.

I mentioned in recent post (see comments: flic.kr/p/YCsaBT) that I might begin to develop a project that I thought of just as our trip to Ohio was ending. I want to try and show through photographs what the Amish life is really all about - not just snap pics of pretty scenery. If I had had this in mind before beginning, I would have been more thoughtful with what and how I was shooting. Any thoughts/ideas from the Flickr world are welcome.

Taken on a recent trip to Scotland. Loved this very original postbox on Easdale Island. Unfortunately we visited during a spell of harsh blazing sunshine, so the original shot was pretty much useless as it stood. Edited in Topaz Impression 2 with added textures taken on the trip :-)
