I could get a squirrel proof one but they have to eat as well even though they don't belong in this country

Our local community gardens have been around for many years so the plots there have evolved their own sense of place and style - which often transcend whomever the stewarding gardener might be. Some of the most wonderful leftover artifacts are the "fences" which are, without a doubt, some of the most unique, artistic and ingenious fences I've ever seen.

Happy Fence Friday, my friends! Have an ingeniously inspiring weekend. :)

“Genuine contemplation involves no tension. It relaxes us. It leaves you rested and refreshed in your whole being. There is no strain in real contemplation because when the gift is real, you do not depend on it, you are not enslaved by the need to experience anything. The contemplative’s trust is in God, not in himself. The peace and rest of contemplation is the fruit of a living faith in the action of divine grace. The contemplative is able to let go of himself and everything else, knowing that everything that matters in his life is in God’s hands, and that he does not have to “take thought for the morrow”. He fully realizes the meaning of the Gospel message of salvation by the grace of God and not by dependence on human ingenuity.

The “nothingness” within us - which is at the same time the place where our freedom springs into being - is secretly filled with the presence and light of God as long as our eyes are not on ourselves. And then our freedom is united with the freedom of God Himself. Nothing can impede the joy and creativity of our acts of love.”

-Thomas Merton, The Inner Experience

A female Eastern Bluebird. Bluebird nest boxes in Carden Alvar are all against the fences; most often the birds land on a rusty fence wire before entering the nest. Some enterprising photographers decided to put up a broken piece of branch around the nest box to give the birds a more natural looking perch - only to forget about the cable ties. Lieu : Rajasthan, Inde

Stepwells in Rajasthan, India, boasts a rich history dating back over a thousand years. Initially built to harvest rainwater and provide access to groundwater, they evolved into architectural marvels and communal spaces.

Constructed by digging into the earth, these structures were adorned with intricate carvings, serving as both utilitarian and aesthetic symbols. Stepwells facilitated water storage in arid regions, crucial for agriculture, drinking, and rituals. They also served as meeting points, offering respite from the scorching desert heat.

Over time, step-wells declined with modernization, but their cultural significance endures, inspiring art, literature, and conservation efforts. Today, they stand as poignant reminders of India’s ingenuity in water management and architectural prowess ...

"Ingenuity quotient" è una definizione che trovai su Popular Science nel primo dopoguerra, mi colpì la corrispondenza con il comportamento di noi napoletani che secolarmente troviamo stratagemmi di sopravvivenza.

Qualche anno dopo mi capitò per mano un libretto di un filosofo tedesco del novecento dal titolo "La filosofia del rotto "dove ritrovai esilaranti aneddoti sul comportamento dei napoletani.

Amish cooks would clean out their Mason jars, then turn them upside down and put them on fence posts around their gardens. The intense summer sun would generate enough heat inside the jars that the fence posts would actually char — perfectly sanitizing the jars. HMS Warrior, launched in 1860, was a technological marvel of her time. As the world's first iron-hulled warship, she was larger, faster, and more heavily armored than any ship before her. Her impressive size and firepower made her a symbol of British naval supremacy and a deterrent to potential adversaries.

While Warrior's active service was relatively short, her impact was significant. She not only served as a powerful warship but also as a diplomatic tool, escorting royalty and touring British ports. Today, she stands as a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the Victorian era, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and a reminder of Britain's maritime heritage.

HMS Warrior, once a symbol of British naval might, was eventually outclassed by newer, more powerful ships. By the late 19th century, she was relegated to various reserve roles, including a torpedo training ship and a refueling pontoon.

In the late 1970s, a major restoration effort began to return Warrior to her former glory. Underwritten by Sir John Smith, the goal was to return her to how she appeared between 1861 and 1864 on her first commission. £7 million and eight years later she was restored and towed from Hartlepool to her permanent home in Portsmouth Harbour.

More than 40 years later though work hasn’t stopped. The conservation team made up of riggers, shipkeepers, conservators, painters and more are constantly at work ensuring HMS Warrior is in top shape for the hundreds of thousands of visitors that see her every year. The ongoing conservation work ensures that this iconic ship will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come.

People in the far north are quite clever when it comes to solving daily problems that might arise.

When your source of water is located high on the mountain side, and your home or business is well below - you simply make your own water pipeline. Of course this only solves the problem in the summer, as your jerry-rigged pipeline will freeze solid in the winter. In winter you will be digging a hole in the ice of the nearest body of water, filling containers, and hauling them home. I never said that life in the far north was easy. 😄

Yuanyang Rice Terraces, located on the southern slopes of Ailao Mountain in Yuanyang County (part of Honghe Hani Autonomous Prefecture) and located in the south of Yunnan Province of China has been a masterpiece of the ingenuity of the Hani people for generations. Southern Ailao Mountain, with this typical tiered landscape, is famed for its unique frontier scenery.

The Hani people's ancestors came to this steep mountain area 2,500 years ago. In their struggle against the difficult terrain they successfully established the terraces, where they grew rice in order to make a living. The technology of developing fertile land on rugged mountain slopes didn't spread all over China and Southeast Asia until 14th century. The creativity of the Hani people turned this mountain area into one of artistic beauty.

The Honghe Hani rice terraces are an exceptional reflection of a resilient land management system that optimises social and environmental resources, demonstrates an extraordinary harmony between people and their environment in spiritual, ecological and visual terms, and is based on a spiritual respect for nature and respect for both the individual and the community, through a system of dual interdependence known as the ‘Man-God Unity social system’.

I love photographing old doors. Antique doors are not just an entrance and an exit. They are a penetration into the secrets of other eras, human destinies and, if you like, into the wonderful world of art. With what love, ingenuity and taste all these ancient doors, gates, shutters, door handles, locks, bolts, menacing masks, various bizarre figures are created. You just want to feel the rough structure of the wood with your hand, touch the cold patterned metal...

I mentioned in recent post (see comments: flic.kr/p/YCsaBT) that I might begin to develop a project that I thought of just as our trip to Ohio was ending. I want to try and show through photographs what the Amish life is really all about - not just snap pics of pretty scenery. If I had had this in mind before beginning, I would have been more thoughtful with what and how I was shooting. Any thoughts/ideas from the Flickr world are welcome.
