We had a fun time running around in the green space. I shot blind for the 52 Weeks for Dogs challenge. Me hunched over running with my camera at my knees, Jasper flies past me. He really loves to be out running around with his humans. The neighborhood green spaces are really there for water management, but provide a nice place for activities like this.

(If you're interested - Green spaces in Phoenix area neighborhoods: Rare is there a slow drizzle in the desert. When it rains, it pours great buckets of water that are not quick to absorb into the rocky soil. These green spaces are lower than street level and provide a place for the water to run off during rainstorms rather than flooding people's homes. There are drains in the green spaces that take the water away at a managed pace. After a big storm, many of the green spaces fill up and become ponds for a day or so while the water drains - maybe once per year. Being from Wisconsin originally, we had no such thing as these green spaces, so I was fascinated by the ingenuity of green spaces when I moved to the desert 14 years ago)

Our local community gardens have been around for many years so the plots there have evolved their own sense of place and style - which often transcend whomever the stewarding gardener might be. Some of the most wonderful leftover artifacts are the "fences" which are, without a doubt, some of the most unique, artistic and ingenious fences I've ever seen.

Happy Fence Friday, my friends! Have an ingeniously inspiring weekend. :)

The nests these tiny hummingbirds build are amazing. They are roughly the size of a golf ball. You couldn't duplicate it with your hands and they do it all with their beak. True works of art.

A female Eastern Bluebird. Bluebird nest boxes in Carden Alvar are all against the fences; most often the birds land on a rusty fence wire before entering the nest. Some enterprising photographers decided to put up a broken piece of branch around the nest box to give the birds a more natural looking perch - only to forget about the cable ties. "Ingenuity quotient" è una definizione che trovai su Popular Science nel primo dopoguerra, mi colpì la corrispondenza con il comportamento di noi napoletani che secolarmente troviamo stratagemmi di sopravvivenza.

Qualche anno dopo mi capitò per mano un libretto di un filosofo tedesco del novecento dal titolo "La filosofia del rotto "dove ritrovai esilaranti aneddoti sul comportamento dei napoletani.

Amish cooks would clean out their Mason jars, then turn them upside down and put them on fence posts around their gardens. The intense summer sun would generate enough heat inside the jars that the fence posts would actually char — perfectly sanitizing the jars. Yuanyang Rice Terraces, located on the southern slopes of Ailao Mountain in Yuanyang County (part of Honghe Hani Autonomous Prefecture) and located in the south of Yunnan Province has been a masterpiece of the ingenuity of the Hani people for generations. Southern Ailao Mountain, with this typical tiered landscape, is famed for its unique frontier scenery.

The Hani people's ancestors came to this steep mountain area 2,500 years ago. In their struggle against the difficult terrain they successfully established the terraces, where they grew rice in order to make a living. The technology of developing fertile land on rugged mountain slopes didn't spread all over China and Southeast Asia until 14th century. The creativity of the Hani people turned this mountain area into one of artistic beauty. In recognition, the Ming Dynasty emperor granted the title of 'Skillful Sculptor' to Hani people and their good reputation was passed down from generation to generation. At present, known as 'land sculpture' the terraced fields have been being officially acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site.

Chand Baori, located in Abhaneri village, Rajasthan, is one of India’s deepest and largest stepwells, built around the 9th century by King Chanda of the Nikumbha Dynasty. Constructed to combat the region’s severe water scarcity, the stepwell features 3,500 narrow steps descending 13 stories to a depth of about 100 feet. Its geometric precision and intricate carvings exemplify ancient Indian architecture and engineering. Chand Baori also served as a community gathering place, providing a cool respite from the desert heat. Over the centuries, it has stood as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its builders, attracting visitors and historians fascinated by its historical and architectural significance.

The United Nations is working towards expanding their powers yet again. If you fail, try again: write and rewrite, package and repackage, until it’s accepted. This is another step towards world governance.

HMS Warrior, launched in 1860, was a technological marvel of her time. As the world's first iron-hulled warship, she was larger, faster, and more heavily armored than any ship before her. Her impressive size and firepower made her a symbol of British naval supremacy and a deterrent to potential adversaries.

While Warrior's active service was relatively short, her impact was significant. She not only served as a powerful warship but also as a diplomatic tool, escorting royalty and touring British ports. Today, she stands as a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the Victorian era, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and a reminder of Britain's maritime heritage.

HMS Warrior, once a symbol of British naval might, was eventually outclassed by newer, more powerful ships. By the late 19th century, she was relegated to various reserve roles, including a torpedo training ship and a refueling pontoon.

In the late 1970s, a major restoration effort began to return Warrior to her former glory. Underwritten by Sir John Smith, the goal was to return her to how she appeared between 1861 and 1864 on her first commission. £7 million and eight years later she was restored and towed from Hartlepool to her permanent home in Portsmouth Harbour.

More than 40 years later though work hasn’t stopped. The conservation team made up of riggers, shipkeepers, conservators, painters and more are constantly at work ensuring HMS Warrior is in top shape for the hundreds of thousands of visitors that see her every year. The ongoing conservation work ensures that this iconic ship will continue to inspire and educate for generations to come.

People in the far north are quite clever when it comes to solving daily problems that might arise.

When your source of water is located high on the mountain side, and your home or business is well below - you simply make your own water pipeline. Of course this only solves the problem in the summer, as your jerry-rigged pipeline will freeze solid in the winter. In winter you will be digging a hole in the ice of the nearest body of water, filling containers, and hauling them home. I never said that life in the far north was easy. 😄

In this photograph, a traditional Turkish family is seen squeezed into a Tofaş car after a day at the beach. Although production of the vehicle ended years ago, it remains a beloved classic. Overloaded with passengers and luggage, the car appears almost sunken under the weight. One child, who couldn't fit inside, has been laid across the rear window shelf as a makeshift solution. In Turkey, practical ingenuity often takes precedence over safety regulations—and this image captures that perfectly.

The couple probably wanted a long-exposure shot of The Parkway but had no tripod. So he set it on the steps to steady the camera.

I mentioned in recent post (see comments: flic.kr/p/YCsaBT) that I might begin to develop a project that I thought of just as our trip to Ohio was ending. I want to try and show through photographs what the Amish life is really all about - not just snap pics of pretty scenery. If I had had this in mind before beginning, I would have been more thoughtful with what and how I was shooting. Any thoughts/ideas from the Flickr world are welcome.

"Ingenuity" is a necessary skill in Amish life.
