Standing out in a crowd and swimming against the tide...well done sir!

Dentro del recinto hay trece ermitas individuales

Lone tree standing in a field at the top of a hill behind Bordlands, near West Linton, Peeblesshire, (more recently Scottish Borders) Scotland.

Really struggled to think of something original and different for this theme on Crazy Tuesday. I tried a few different ideas but none of them seemed to work, especially not to my satisfaction.

Gave up for a while and decided, mid-afternoon to boil an egg as a snack as feeling a bit peckish and whilst the water was boiling away, the thought struck me that maybe there might be a suitable ‘motion blur’ shot in the pan, not just the egg!

I took some shots and, lo and behold I arrived at some images that might prove suitable, I thought. I chose this one and after a little cropping decided that it was different and in my mind, quite original. The water surface appears smoothed out, adopting an oily look and getting rid of the individual bubbles, small and big. In my mind it looks a bit like transparent lava in the mouth of a volcanic crater! I know, I have a weird brain!

In case anyone wants a better look at the two from that mating pair I posted recently, here they are with individual portraits- female on the left, male on the right. They favored the same perch, although I flipped the female around so they would face each other. Siskiyou County, California

This part of Bodmin Moor, near Minions, a few miles north of Liskeard, has the remains of three neolithic stone circles known as The Hurlers, as well as several individual standing stones such as the one pictured. They are thought to date from around 1500 BC. Although there have been many theories, no-one knows for certain what their purpose was.

Tin and copper mining took place throughout this area until early in the 20th century, and many of the engine houses and other remains can still be seen. The engine house in the distance housed a 50-inch pumping engine, installed in the 1880s. The mine shaft it served reached 720 feet and was part of the South Phoenix Mine. The engine house is now a visitor centre.

I believe that this delightful bird is common in southern and eastern USA. Having seen this one in Costa Rica this would individual would probably have been a migrant.

it can sometimes be difficult to see our individual horizons...

One of my photographic goals has been to take pictures of individual snowflakes. This has been a particularly difficult goal to achieve due to a number of reasons. First, the temperature and weather conditions need to be JUST right to create visible snowflakes, worthy of photographing (this is not often). Second, it doesn't snow every day (even if it has snowed often). And third, most of the times it has snowed, it was during a time that I could not get out with my camera. Either it was night time, during school hours, when I had an appointment, or when I was sick (and I was sick for six weeks straight this year, so this was often). I figured I would just have to wait until next year to get the shots I so desired. But winter wasn't done with us yet, even if it was the first day of spring! (After all, I was born in a blizzard at the end of March!) A friend of mine out in West Jersey posted a picture on Facebook of an individual snowflake which got me ALL EXCITED!!! I saw her picture during the school day and could not WAIT to get home to my camera and these snowflakes that seemed to be so well-formed! I just had to hope the temperature and conditions were the same by me, after school. I finally got home, and was THRILLED to see they were! My sister and I had a great time looking at and photographing these snowflakes! I'm sure we looked ridiculous sitting in the snow on our front lawn with blankets and towels. I was using a macro lens. The lens has a VERY narrow depth of field. So, if the flakes weren't completely flat and parallel with my lens, only part of the flake would be in focus. This was frustrating. And despite using a macro lens, it was still very difficult to get the flakes in focus. These that I am posting were the best of the crop. More pictures to come! I'll post a few each day. I'm not thrilled with the red background, but maybe someday I can figure out how to change the color in Lightroom.

ANother day, another Grevillea. This time, I found this 12 foot shrub just blooming. I don't know how long it flowers, but this should give y'all plenty of time to come and see it. I think that the flower of this one is one of the prettiest and certainly not quite as bold as the others which you'll see in due time.

Grevillea petrophiloides (pink pokers) is a shrub grevillea native to Western Australia. It is 1 to 3 metres high, with thin, needle-like leaves and dense, cylindrical flowers. Grevillea petrophiloides occurs in sandy and rocky areas. The fruits are sticky follicles, 5 to 7 centimetres long. The flower stalk two weeks before this was taken was like two six inch tightly packed - like catkins - and there was the promise of hundreds of stamens. I fully expect the Anna's Hummingbirds to start showing up (they're nesting right now, the only time of year when I don't see them on a regular basis). And the bee hive in the willow tree trunk down the street is just showing signs of life. It's spring!

I'd like to have given this the black background treatment, but it's just not possible with such tightly packed flowers. I knew that when I was choosing this particular branch, the only one without part of the tree as background. Rather, I could position myself to get one of the paths to be "behind" the flowers and naturally blurred at that time of day.

Giraffes travel in herds of 4 to 30 individuals. Females are called cows and males are called bulls. Cows and calves stay together, but all the other animals freely move between herds. When young bulls are 3 to 4 years of age, they leave the herd they were born into. Young bulls challenge each other in controlled fights. This behavior is called "necking."

Giraffes are browsers feeding day and night on tree leaves, flowers and sometimes grass. They tend to avoid feeding during the hottest hours of the day. They reach high into trees, removing vegetation with their 18 inch-long (46 cm-long) tongue and lips.

Although adults can defend themselves from predators with kicks from their large hooves, young giraffes fall prey to lions and sometimes hyenas. All giraffes are more vulnerable to attacks when they are in the crouching position they adopt when they are drinking water.

My favorite friend Robin;

He's a very friendly individual. I spent about an hour with him before leaving the Bradgate park, his glorious voices make me so happy. .. I believe most of us actually know very little about these busy, hardy little birds that are fearsome fighters too often have a sadly short lifespan.

The robin is, without doubt, one of our favourite garden birds. It seems to trust us, staying close when we’re in the garden and even taking food from our hands.

The UK's favourite bird - with its bright red breast it is familiar throughout the year and especially at Christmas! Males and females look identical, and young birds have no red breast and are spotted with golden brown. Robins sing nearly all year round and despite their cute appearance, they are aggressively territorial and are quick to drive away intruders. They will sing at night next to street lights.

How long do robins live?

A robin’s lifespan is just 13 months on average due to high mortality among robins in their first year. Once they’ve passed that barrier, they stand a much better chance of surviving for quite a while – the record currently stands at 19 years.

What they eat:

Worms, seeds, fruits, insects and other invertebrates.

Study the robin's plumage.

The male robin is brighter in color than the female. His eye ring, bright beak color, black head, and white throat markings all show this bird is a male. The female's feathers look washed out and faded compared to the darker, richer colors of the male.

The female breast will be lighter in color, trending towards reddish-orange. Wing and tail feathers will also be different. Male robins tend to have darker black wings and tail feathers, while females typically have a charcoal tone to their plumage.

The European robin (Erithacus rubecula), known simply as the robin or robin redbreast in the British Isles, is a small insectivorous passerine bird, specifically a chat, that was formerly classified as a member of the thrush family (Turdidae) but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher. About 12.5–14.0 cm (5.0–5.5 inches) in length, the male and female are similar in colouration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upper-parts and a whitish belly. It is found across Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa; it is sedentary in most of its range except the far north.

The term robin is also applied to some birds in other families with red or orange breasts. These include the American robin (Turdus migratorius), which is a thrush, and the Australasian robins of the family Petroicidae, the relationships of which are unclear.
