I was able to read the marker on the leg and sent the information to the Bird Banding Laboratory. This morning I found a Certificate of Appreciation in my inbox. This tern was banded when too young to fly in the summer of 2011 on Hat Island in the northern part of Lake Michigan. It's just above the letter "M" in "Mich." on the map to the right so this bird is almost home on return migration from the southern US or Caribbean.

I never clean out my inbox.. at one point I had over 500 unread flickr mails LOL right now I have 91 :P

That's right kids, this used to be the only way you got ANY mail!

I might be dating myself with this shot but for me this is and was the only way you got any sort of mail. Think about it, how else can you possibly put a cherry bomb in someone's mail box?

This was shot up in Madrid, New Mexico. Madrid is an artist colony of sorts, at least it was when we were there. They're famous for the ending of the film Wild Hogs (2007) being set and filmed in the town and in the 1976 film The Man Who Fell To Earth, starring David Bowie the miners' houses on New Mexico Highway 14 can be seen.

Madrid used to be a company owned mining town and the Belinda Vasquez Garcia's novel, The Witch Narratives: Reincarnation (2012), is set in Madrid during the 1920s and 1930s.

I didn't plan this photo. I had the brick wall from another photo, where I just experimenting with lighting. I had the wall on a table, planning to disassemble when I noticed window light cast a checkerboard like pattern, via shadows on the table. So built a back wall and assembled some minifigs for chess pieces.

There are things I wish came out better, but I was happy with the serendipity that led to the photo.

Update: 22 November 2019. I now have Windows 10 installed on my computer, thank goodness. The very first thing I wanted to check was Flickr, hoping that I would not be unable to open it. I had to log in, which makes me nervous on the rare occasion that I find I have been logged out somehow, as I know so many people end up not being able to access their Flickr photostream. SO relieved when it all opened just fine. I had to install various programs, reactivate others (with Chat help on some websites). I discovered that two very important things are missing, though. A whole section of emails was lost. Before the transfer to Windows 10, the words at the side were Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk and Deleted. Then, below those, the other (lost) section had things like Saved Sent and Saved received. Contained many years worth of plant lists and locations from bioblitz, outings, natural areas, and other things. Two days ago, the technician remotely rescued them - but last night I discovered that, though the lists are all there, I could not get any of them to open! The other thing that I don't think I will be able to get back is Google Earth and the few hundred locations I had carefully marked on it for years. All the acreages we have visited for years, and so much more. Sigh.

What a day I had to go and collect my computer - another snowstorm, with something like 9" or 10" of heavy wet snow to clear off my car. Coming back home, especially, the visibility was not the greatest in the late afternoon. Felt so happy to finally get home.

Like I have been doing recently, I have posted five more photos from my archives this morning. I still have masses of backing up and deleting to do. While doing this, I have been setting aside a few images not yet posted on Flickr. I will add, below each one, the description that I wrote under another photo taken on the same day, to remind myself where I took the photo posted today.

"On 20 June 2016, I went for a drive SW of the city again. This time, I was thrilled to bits to see two male Bobolinks and a female. I had driven backwards and forwards along the road where I had seen them a few days ago, with no luck. I gave up and, instead, spent some time photographing a beautiful pair of Mountain Bluebirds. After a while, I told myself it was time to leave the Bluebirds in peace and go and see if there was any sign of a Bobolink. I had literally climbed back into my car and pulled forward maybe six feet, when a bird flew to a fence post. It looked bigger than a Savannah Sparrow, so I was curious. Turned out to be a male Bobolink, who gave me the chance for a few quick shots before flying away. Unfortunately, the sun was not in a good direction.

Time to go and photograph a Tree Swallow, Red-winged Blackbirds and a Snipe and then I returned to the pair of Bluebirds. This time, they had two brief visitors - a Brown-headed Cowbird and a tiny Savannah Sparrow, who insisted on trying to perch on the same fence post as the male Bluebird. It was kind of cute to see the two together.

After a while, I decided it really was time to head for home. While crossing the road to my car, I spotted a bird perched on top of a tree way down the road and discovered it was a Bobolink again. It spent a bit of time flying around with another male and a female, eventually flying to a fence post. I had never seen a female before, but recognized it from various photos I had seen online a few days ago. Females are a lot smaller than the males and very different colouring. Three quick photos and it was gone. One of the males stayed on a fence post for a little while, but I was looking into the sun and the light was horrible. All three birds took off across the field and stayed down in the grass and I knew this would be a good time to tear myself away and head happily for home. Normally, I don't get out this often, but I know that it won't be long before all the birds I saw today will have migrated. Also, this was the first day of summer, so I really wanted to spend a few hours outdoors."
