My latest ANIMAL VIDEO (warning, it's a bit shocking): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T2-Xszz7FI
THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTO:
The wild garden around my vacation home in Ticino, where all the photos you can see in my Flickr gallery are from (well, some have been taken a couple of meters outside, but that still counts in my book 😉), had been a cause of contention between me and my mom for some time.
At the root of the conflict was the upper part of the garden, which originally had been conceived by my dear mother as a vegetable patch, but, left to its own devices by me after I "inherited" it, had developed into a marvelous oasis of pure botanic chaos teeming with insect life.
Mom was not amused. Although she - like all in our family - is very much in favor of letting nature roam freely around the house, and she loves all creatures big and small, she (unlike me) does draw a line somewhere. That line was the vegetable patch.
And she let her disapproval be known, and very clearly; she kept pestering me about my unwillingness to pluck the weeds (my response: "What weeds - there are no weeds: I'm creating a functioning ecosystem here, mom!") for several years, until my stubborn refusal made her reach her breaking point. She'd finally had enough.
My mom is a cunning old lady of nearly 80 years (79 to be precise), the matriarch and evil genius of our family (make no mistake: that house and garden are still HERS - and forever will be, regardless what it says on some sheet of paper), and so like a James Bond villain plotting revenge, she hatched a diabolic plan.
One day, when I was gone for a couple of weeks, she let me know via e-mail she had decided to turn this ugly weed jungle of mine into a flowery meadow. There was nothing I could do as she had already ordered a local gardening company to level that part of the garden, and once that was accomplished, as she described with obvious relish, the gardener would plant the most beautiful wild flowers and turn this ugly mess of mine into a colorful paradise.
I was not amused by this at all, as you might imagine, but there was nothing I could do to save my gorgeous oasis of chaos, so I grumpily accepted "my" garden's fate. After that, my mom avoided me whenever she could, and when she couldn't, she wouldn't mention the garden at all. This didn't strike me as odd, since I assumed she might feel at least a little bit guilty about her sneaky move (at this point, I hadn't seen the "improved" version of the garden yet).
Cut to a few weeks later, when I went back to Ticino and finally DID see the "flowery meadow" and "colorful paradise" my dear mother had ordered. My jaw dropped. But in shock - not in awe of flowery beauty of any kind: as there were NO flowers of any kind. What there was, was sod. Plain, ugly sod, completely devoid of any insect (or other animal) life, already turning into a brownish yellow due to a lack of rain in the past weeks.
You see, my mom's Italian is not very good (in fact, it's so far from good that it could be argued she doesn't speak it at all) and as it turned out, there had been a "slight" misunderstanding. Instead of planting gorgeous wild flowers, the local gardener (whose Italian is impeccable by the way), put turf rolls down after he'd leveled my oasis; turf rolls of the kind that is usually used for sterile football fields.
OK (you, dear reader, might say at this point); sad story, bro - but what does it have to do with the swallowtail in the photo? The answer is: everything. The past autumn and all through spring this year I've been planting wild flowers in that garden like a mad botanist; I've planted field scabiouses and red clover, ox-eye daisies, echium, salvia and thyme and lavender as well as plants for the caterpillars of the in Switzerland rare swallowtail butterfly such as fennel and wild carrots.
This was my desperate attempt to undo the damage and terrible devastation my mother's wrath had brought upon the earth (well, my garden's earth anyway) and turn this sod-desert into an oasis of pure botanic chaos and a colorful paradise teeming with insect life once more.
And it worked! Ever since those plants started flowering my garden has been an attraction for all kinds of butterflies and generally insects, even rare ones - and, obviously, my dearest guest and visitor that you can see in the photo above: the swallowtail.
These gorgeous butterflies are now steady guests, and they even laid their eggs on the fennel (which is now a nursery for cute swallowtail caterpillars). So in the end, my mom's will prevailed (as is always the case with the wills of all moms all over the world - don't kid yourselves, kids 😉). My weeds are gone, there now is indeed a flowery meadow - and there's even vegetables (although the fennel is strictly for the swallowtails 😊).
I have a creeping suspicion maybe my mom's Italian is better than she lets on...
Over 2000 years ago, King Antiochos I, descended from a long lineage of kings, ruled the territory known as Commagene in Central Anatolia, modern day Turkey. When Darius II of Persia died, his son Antaxerexes, 400 BCE, became the king. One of the satraps, Orondes of Commagene, received the hand of the king's daughter in marriage for helping the king during a war. Ornades was a forefather of Antiochos I (69-31 BCE), who thus claimed his lineage to Darius on his father's side. Another forefather of Antiochos I, Mithradates married, Laodike, the daughter of a Seleucid king. Thus, on the mother's side Antiochos I claimed be a descendant of Alexander's mother's side. Armed with these impeccable lineage credentials, Antiochos I ruled Commagene territory with the help of Rome. It was a golden age for Commagene region of Anatolia. In addition to military construction projects, Antiochos I founded a God-kingship cult. He claimed that he was appointed by the Gods to rule Commagene. When Antiochos I died in 31 BCE, he left behind a powerful kingdom to his son Mithradates II.

Enthralled by the f.64 group, about a year ago I took it upon myself to try and create an image in their impeccable style.
The most difficult project I ever undertook! Finding the right subject matter and having it presented was the first task; Cauliflower after cauliflower - it had to be sliced right. and mind you, I don't eat cauliflower regularly... finally one evening, preparing dinner I made the right cut.
The light was wrong, the shadows placed wrong - bring out the butter and let's eat.
A month later, another good slice, another failure.
I wanted to bring the intensity and BW harmonics which Weston did in his "cabbage" image or Davis did with his "artichoke" photo.
One day it all came together - the cut, the form, the design. A leaf ! Through my previous failures I knew to shoot it in dull lighting with a thin piece of paper over the light. I knew where I wanted it's shadowing and scattered dark zones. I wanted to span the zones and nuanced gray areas, and then quite unexpectedly the cauliflower started to sweat.
We look for that singular moment in street photography when everything is in perfect alignment. Little did I expect that same alignment would be necessary to achieve an f.64 photo.
I know (it's f/5.0). and yes, I could have made tis crystal clear in Photoscape, but there's more to f.64 then simple sharpness.
Now, can I do the same with film as they did?
Possibly impossible.....

This was supposed to be a 30 seconds, longtime night exposure of that lovely boat in the middle of this calm little gulf. So I set my tiny little tripod on the edge of a little fence on the side of the road, dialed in my settings and pressed the shutter release button. Heard the shutter going up and counted the 30 seconds to the end of the exposure. Round about 10 seconds before it would close, a car started its engine, turned on its headlights in the middle of nowhere right across and lit the entire scene!
Aaarghhh!!! You wouldn't imagine how furious this made me, thinking what the heck? How on earth the timing was so wrong? And what in the world were they doing there in the middle of the night in no man's land!? Well alright, I have a pretty good idea what they were doing but still... their timing was awful! It drove me mad! I was already imagining myself throwing rocks and stones across, in a parallel universe where everything goes...
While I was thinking all those "creative" ways to channel my "love" for fellow humans across, I heard the click and shutter was closed. I picked up my camera and looked what had I got. Well I have to say, they did it just at the right moment and their timing was impeccable! Their headlights were meant to be a star in this photo! The biggest one! Literally! I'd certainly would give them a hug would they be on this side of that little gulf! Thinking of it now, I should have signaled them with my flashlight to thank them for the favor!!! :-)

The Aeberhards own half of Gstaad, and Josie, the snobbish young heiress to the banking dynasty is certainly accustomed to have her way with servants, employees, suppliers, and men in general.
Last weekend she had invited Audrey, an old school friend of much less fortunate descent, and her exotic fiancé, Aris Yaman. She was quite evidently expecting to easily take advantage of her friend's lover in the intimacy of one of her more remote chalets.
Well, Aris was a bit lost in the process, as usual, but Audrey stood her ground, and much to the surprise of the group of skiers wizzing by at that moment, flattened the impeccably dressed Josie under a relentless storm of hard packed snowballs.
The skiers captured the scene and, we, at Studios Claris, are proud to share the scoop with our lovely Flickr followers: love still trumps money!

Machu Picchu 20221127
Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD on a mountain ridge roughly 2,420 meters above sea level using simple tools*. Roughly 200 structures survived throughout the ruins – all of them lost their wooden, straw-thatched roofs over the ages. But the decay stopped at the perfectly cut granite stones. These remain impeccable and showcase the unbelievable skill of the Inca masons. The technique of fitting stones without mortar is known as Ashlar. The Inca refrained from using mortar because the loose-fitting was more resistant to earthquakes and the whole Urubamba Valley was prone to experiencing them.
The most amazing part: Steel and other hard metals were unknown to the Incas. They cut the stones using bronze tools and harder stones from nearby quarries. Judging from tool marks left on the stones it is most probable that the Incas pounded the stones into shape and not really cut them.
Simply dreamy setting by Tia is the backdrop for this image. I love the romantic vines that droop down the trellis and the wonderful amass of windows that allow for SL's sun to peek through and leave amazing shadows. The quality of this set from FaMESHed is impeccable, as are all creations by my very talented friend, Tia. I may be biased, but you have to admit, she is pretty fantastic. Speaking of fantastic, this new dress by Blueberry is dotted with bead-work that is .................

You're feeling nervous,
aren't you, boy?
With your quiet voice
and impeccable style.
Don't ever let them steal your joy
And your gentle ways
to keep 'em from running wild.
They can kick dirt in your face,
Dress you down,
and tell you that your place is in the middle
when they hate the way you shine.
I see you tugging on your shirt,
Trying to hide inside of it
and hide how much it hurts.
Let 'em laugh while they can,
Let 'em spin,
let 'em scatter in the wind.
I have been to the movies,
I've seen how it ends --
And the joke's on them.
You're never alone.

Titta Ruffo ( 1877- 1953, Hybrid Verismo school )
Walter Legge: "From the his first phrase the audience was vanquished by the overwhelming beauty of his voice—manly, broad, sympathetic, of unsurpassed richness. Such ease of production, such abundance of ringing high Gs! “He said that usually the organic beings, with their greater fields of energy, are the initiators of communication with inorganic beings, but a subtle and sophisticated follow-up is always the province of the inorganic beings. Once the barrier is broken, inorganic beings change and become what seers call allies. From that moment inorganic beings can anticipate the seer's most subtle thoughts or moods or fears.
"The old seers became mesmerized by such devotion from their allies," he went on. "Stories are that the old seers could make their allies do anything they wanted. That was one of the reasons they believed in their own invulnerability. They got fooled by their self-importance. The allies have power only if the seer who sees them is the paragon of impeccability; and those old seers just weren't."

Hello there! I hope all is well my friends! It's still Sunday so happy Sunday again! LOL I have a new living room/lounge area I decorated featuring Contrast at Shiny Shabby with the Gentleman set And West Village by Apple Fall with the Spring Fauna Fatpack at N21! I wanted an industrial setting filled with greenery and flowers. This is what I came up with! The chairs and sofa are from Contrast and they are superb. I especially enjoyed sitting on the sofa. I had to pull myself off to take the picture. LOL The animations are worth mentioning as well. I am a thicker avi and sometimes the poses in most furniture doesn't work well. I did not have any issue with the poses in this furniture. I am keeping a Spring vibe with the Caramel colors of the furniture and beautiful flowers from West Village. There is 5 different flowers to choose from and they are all highly detailed. My favorite is the Billy Ball stems so I put a vase of them front and center! But, I love all of them. When I was pacing my first steps in the photography world, I was taking down a lot of rather hasty frames of the same vista ... I was thinking that If you take f.e forty shots of the same scene, a few of them will probably be quite close to what you're truly after ... After all, no film is used !!
A few years of experience were needed to persuade me though that I was wrong ... Now most of the times I'm hunting for the perfect scene, the perfect synthesis before actually clicking the shutter button ... I now try not to just fire away with my camera ... I take my pre - shutter press preparation time ... I set up my tripod and use the live view mode in order to set the best possible frame of whatever I'm looking at ... I play with the shooting angles changing places and shooting heights until I "see" the synthesis I want ...
I now want to return home with five frames of the same scene instead of forty, three of which would be technically impeccable ... I came to believe that less camera clicks actually turn you into a better photographer ...

With a world class hangover from a big day and night my Sunday began at the beach taking in an impeccable Sydney’s summer day and easing the headache with some salt water.
As with many summer days in Sydney a storm began to roll through just after lunch and with some time on my hands and the aftereffects of the night before fading away I decided to head to La Perouse in Sydney’s south.
I chose my location, set my camera down, attached my cable release and got comfy on the grass waiting for this impressive storm front to roll through.
Without a drop of rain I literally shot this image with a cable release while lying down. Photography at it’s best.

Last Sunday, April 23, was Sant Jordi and that day also coincides with International Book Day. Around that date, the deaths of Cervantes, Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega are commemorated. On that day the streets of Barcelona are flooded with roses, books and many people. This man in the image did not want to wait until he got home to start reading his book. His demeanor and his relaxed manner were striking in the midst of the boisterous crowd. Sitting on a bench on the busy Paseo de Gracia, book in hand, impeccable suit, hat and pipe in his mouth, he was devouring his recent acquisition absorbed. Next to her, a boy, with a bored expression, was guarding the roses he had bought to safely offer as a gift.
Paraphrasing something I read a long time ago, this image reminds me that flowers, books and minds are better when they are open
