Kawah Ijen Volcano is located on the island of East Java, Indonesia.
The Kawah Ijien volcano has a one-kilometer-wide turquoise-colored acid crater lake.
The lake is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation.
The miners break the cooled material into large pieces and carry it away in baskets. Miners must carry loads, which range from 75 kg to 90 kg, up 300 m to the crater rim, with a gradient of 45 to 60 degrees and then 3 km down the mountain for weighing. Most miners make this journey twice a day. The work is low-paid and the typical daily earnings were equivalent to approximately $13 US...
Java Oriental, Indonesia

Kawah Ijen volcano. Following the yellow dust the poorly paid sulfur miners (considerably less than 2 $ per day) carry their load.

Incredibles carriers rock volcano sulfur. They carry on their shoulders a large blocks of sulfur divided in two baskets, equilibrium by balance connecting by bamboo slats . Loads up to 90 kg per person per trip.
Crater Lake, Volcano Ijen, Indonesia 伊真火山湖——印度尼西亚
The lake is recognised as the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world. It is also a source for the river Banyupahit, resulting in highly acidic and metal-enriched river water which has a significant detrimental effect on the downstream river ecosystem.

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes located in East Java, Indonesia.
It is known for its blue fire, acidic crater lake, and labour-intensive sulfur mining.
It is inside an eponymous larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometres (12 mi) wide.
Located in East Java this picturesque crater is filled with toxic sulphur and is both lethal and beautiful. After a demanding night hike to the summit we were rewarded with beautiful colors splayed across the landscape. Taken on a workshop I was conducting in Indonesia.

Sunrise light on Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater) and its beautiful turquoise colored lake (the largest highly acidic lake in the world). You can also see the sulfuric fumes from the sulfur mines.
This was another very long day, traveling from Bromo to Ijen, hiking to the top of the crater, going to the bottom of the crater twice, first during the night to shoot the blue flames, then going up to shoot the sunrise, and going down again to shoot the sulfur mines and workers. More than 35 hours without sleep, but it was worth it! 😁

This must have been one of the Indonesian highlights I had the chance to experience. Taken really early after climbing all the way up to the top, took us about 3 hours. If you ever have the chance to visit Java, don't forget to do the Ijen crater trip - worth every ounce of sweat you'll spend to get there.
Kawah Ijen located in the Banyuwangi Regency on East Java, Indonesia.
The lake is recognized as the largest highly acidic crater lake in the world.
A two-hour hike is required to reach the rim of the crater, followed by a 30 minutes hike to the sunrise point.
Ijen Crater is a nature reserve Ijen Park is located between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso District, East Java, Indonesia. This crater exactly located at the top of Mount Ijen which is one of a series of volcanoes in East Java such as Bromo, Semeru and Merapi. Another uniqueness of this crater has a level of acidity is very high with almost close to zero and the temperature of the water is 20° Celsius. In addition to elevation 2,799 m (9,183 ft) Posis crater is located in the middle of the largest caldera on the island of Java. The caldera size about 20 miles. The crater size is about 960 meters x 600 meters with a depth of 200 meters. This crater is located at a depth of more than 300 meters below the caldera wall.
This crater is a large lake with a bluish-green mist and smoke of the sulfur that is stunning. In addition, cold air with temperatures 10° Celsius, the temperature might reach 2° Celsius will increase the sensation of its own experience. Various plants that exist only in the highlands can also be found here, such as Edelweis Flowers and Pine.
From my recent trip to Bromo and Ijen Volcano, East Java.
The best time to start hiking is in the early morning, around 3 or 4 AM. You will be just on time to watch beautiful sunrise peeping through the mountain tops. At 2 PM, the access to the crater is closed due to heavy white sulfuric smoke that makes hiking impossible.
I wish to comeback again to Ijen very soon. This place is incredible! I LOVE Ijen :)

A very tough life for those sulfur carriers, having to carry on their back up to 60Kg of sulfur from the bottom of the Ijen volcano several times a day.
The Kawah Ijen, is an Indonesia volcano located in East Java. Its name means "Green crater" in Javanese, because of a lake deemed to be the most acidic in the world.
The summit crater contains a solfatara from where miners extract sulfur in very hard conditions (their life expectancy is around 40 years).
