I don't think I ever felt as badly for a crew as I did for this IC crew on August 1, 1996 at Dubuque.

This crew had gone on duty sometime between 7-8 a.m. to take a train of coal empties from the IEI Terminal in East Dubuque west. By the time they left Dubuque it was late afternoon, and they had about four hours left before the died on the law.

The crew had taken GP9 1777 across the river to assemble the train and bring it back across the river, grab the rest of the power, then head out of town.

However, they ran into all kinds of air problems getting the train together (including a "kicker" that kept dumping the air) at IEI. At one point, the crew was cited by the East Dubuque Police Department for blocking a crossing too long.

Once train was together, it was hurry up and wait for a window to get across the BN at East Dubuque.

Once they got a clear board, the lone GP9 struggled with over 100 empty hoppers through curve at East Dubuque, across the bridge and into Dubuque. The rest of the power was sitting at Wood, seen here, waiting to couple up and mu with the 1777 and train.

Southbound intermodal train I05 arrives in Springfield on a frigid morning back in January of 1997. By early 1997, I05 was looking less like a pig train and more like a manifest freight. In my notes I have the train symbol recorded as I05/CHGW, reflecting the changing traffic mix.

Northbound counterpart I06 had already arrived at Avenue Yard behind me. The two IC crews will swap trains and head back to their respective home terminals of East St. Louis and Homewood.

If you look closely in the background you can see the headlight of the Springfield Roadswitcher pulling up to the home signal at Starnes. It was a busy morning on the Gilman Subdivision.

ICG GP10 8055 at Rockford, Illinois on an unknown day in October, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1954 as IC GP9 9055, it was rebuilt at Paducah in 1971 to GP10 8055, later CC 8055 (renumbered to CC 8416), and back to the IC in 1996. It is stenciled under the cab window: WATERLOO IOWA. Unfortunately, I failed to record the names of these gentlemen, so if anyone recognizes them, please leave a comment. Thanks.
