Rudolph “Skip” Keith (left) and Leonard Matlovich talk to each other during a gay rights conference held at All Souls Church in Washington, D.C. October 11, 1975.

The two were discharged from the Air Force in separate cases in 1975 when they openly said they were gay.

Keith, a native of Washington, D.C., was an Air Force staff sergeant who had an “outstanding” service record, according to military authorities.

Keith had been in the service for seven years when he announced he was gay during a race relations class at Dover Air Force base on May 23rd.

The Air Force recommended his discharge citing five instances in which Keith told people he was gay.

Keith said at the conference that “I liked the Air Force and hated to go. They’re a bunch of hypocrites and their rules for discharges aren’t hard and fast.”

Keith was given an honorable discharge.

Matlovich was a national figure at that point in time while few had heard of Keith.

Matlovich was a former Air Force technical sergeant who was discharged after 12 years in the service in 1975 and came out two months before Keith and became a leading gay rights spokesperson.

Unlike Keith, Matlovich was given a general discharge instead of honorable and he sued over his expulsion from the service and the lesser grade discharge.

At the conference Matlovich told the 350 attendees, “If we are united, nothing on earth can defeat us. Black Americans led the way in the fight for civil rights and now we’re asking for our share of the American pie.”

Matlovich planned his coming out with longtime D.C. gay rights activist Franklin Kameny who was looking for someone in the military to test the vague bans on gay people.

Matlovich became the first openly gay person to be featured on the cover a major news magazine in the early gay rights movement when Time put him on the cover of a 1975 issue.

Matlovich’s suit stalled for years in the courts, but in 1980 U.S. District Court Judge Gerhard Gesell ordered him reinstated into the Air Force and promoted.

The Air Force offered Matlovich a financial settlement instead.

Convinced that the military would find some other reason to discharge him if he reentered the service, or that the conservative Supreme Court would rule against him should the Air Force appeal, Matlovich accepted.

The figure, based on back pay, future pay, and pension, was $160,000.

Matlovich briefly lived in Washington, D.C. but ultimately settled in California where he continued gay rights activism.

He announced on Good Morning America in 1987 that he had contracted HIV, and was arrested with other demonstrators in front of the White House that June protesting what they believed was an inadequate response to HIV/AIDS by the administration of President Ronald Reagan.

Matlovich died of AIDS in 1988. Keith dropped from public view and it is unknown what became of him.

In 1993 the military adopted a “Don’t ask don’t tell” policy where gay people could stay in the military provided they didn’t disclose their sexuality and prohibited military personnel from asking about someone’s sexuality.

That policy was ended in 2011, although ongoing litigation over same sex marriage benefits and discrimination continue.

Transgender people were briefly permitted, but President Donald Trump ordered them expelled from the military in 2018.

Then I realized how much of a hypocrite I was. How much I've lost myself along the way. I murdered myself. It was all my doing, no one elses. There was no way around it, I was caught red handed.

THE ULTRACONTEMPORARY ART MOVEMENT . Intervieuw Thierry Geoffroy and Tijana Miskovic by Peter Stanners

the MURMUR mars 2015

Artists producing new work every day and contributing to the public debate – this is the ambition of the 2017 Ultra Contemporary Biennale .

It’s the 2007 Istanbul Biennale and I’m running down the central shopping street in a small group. The word ‘Biennalist’ is emblazoned in red on our white headbands and, as we jog, discuss the theme of this year’s biennale: optimism in a time of global war. Is this hypocritical when the biennale receives funding from corporations who contribute to global unrest?

It was my first introduction to the work of the Colonel aka Thierry Geoffroy, a French conceptual artist based in Copenhagen. Now seated in the café of the Black Diamond library in central Copenhagen this February, he declares that it’s about time the contemporary art world had a wake up call.

“The problem with Fox News is that it makes people believe that what they are watching is news when it is just propaganda. Contemporary art has the same problem. It pretends to care about things, but does the opposite. It supports the weapons industry and vodka. It pretends to be critical but it isn’t. And pretending is bad for all of us.”

Ultra fast art

My jog through Istanbul is what Geoffroy likes to call a ‘Critical Run’ and is one of several art formats he has coined. All tend to incorporate participation and reflection about the role of the artists in society.

But we have met because he wants to tell me about a new idea: an Ultra Contemporary Biennale. Over the space of six weeks in Copenhagen in 2017, artists will create new work everyday that addresses pressing social questions. The art will be created and presented in galleries, public spaces and institutions, and consist of work by everyone from sculptors to performance artist.

“The art world has abused the word contemporary. When you go to a contemporary art show, you are seeing antiques. The word has been stolen so we need a new word: Ultra contemporary. It’s about creating a city that debates in the present, a city that breathes at the same speed as the now.”

Ultra contemporary isn’t the first concept Geoffroy has introduced into art speak. Along with the Critical Run, he is most well known for his Emergency Rooms that are installed galleries and where artists and the public debate on-going social issues. The idea is to train what Geoffroy calls our ‘awareness muscle’, our ability to think critically about the world around us.

“I am fighting apathy,” he explains. “It’s like a gas that has been dropped on society and makes people start sleeping. People notice they can kill without anyone intervening, and politicians can be corrupt without anyone noticing. The whole system is gassed, and it’s my enemy. So now I’m trying to find a formula to create an antidote, a recipe to fight this apathy gas.”

Dysfunction detectors

Artists play an important role in society in Geoffroy’s view. Not content with producing works of aesthetic beauty that are easily commoditised for wealthy art collectors, he argues that artists are uniquely capable of detecting – what he likes to call – ‘dysfunctions’ in society.

It’s a view shared by his collaborator and curator Tijana Miskovic, who sits beside him today.

“Artists takes things that people normally thing of separately, and create new meanings by combining them,” she says. “Visual aesthetics through colour, shape and form should be brought into the daily debate, they add something in addition to the word.”

Miskovic also argues that artists tend to register changes in society long before they develop into actual issues. The problem is that while contemporary artists might claim to address political or sociological issues, the process of creating their work is too slow to contribute to the debate. The ultra contemporary movement, on the other hand, will give a platform for artists to communicate their ideas immediately.

“People who oppose the ultra contemporary will say, ‘art cannot be done fast’”, says Geoffroy. “But just because you have done something quickly, it doesn’t mean you haven’t been thinking about it for ten years. It’s like taking a snapshot, like the photographer Henri Cartier Bresson what he called ‘decisive moment’ – you can wait five hours, but when you take it happens very fast.”

Fast art will mean less polished works, they admit, but this will simply shift our understanding of what a successful work is. Ultra contemporary works will be judged by their relevance and efficiency, their ability to address the issues of the day.

The role of the artist

“In order to exist you need a living strategy, you can just exist or you can make a manifesto, and by making a manifesto you design your life and give it shape. I write lots of lists, for what I will do next week and in ten years time. I try to give shape to the future,” he explains.

“The artists are capturing things. They have a capacity to integrate information and give birth to an artwork that is a synthesis of everything they feel. They can give us a real time diagnosis and look ahead to what might come, so we must capture what they say and give it to the public as fast as possible!”.

I love people who preach about my sins.

-->> .. Today i had an opportunity to meet a person who took a stand against a hypocritical and even dangerous (in my opinion) element that was based right here in Colorado Springs and exploded the headlines in Nov.2006.

My disillusionment with this city, the 99% of the media.. and just life in general here is tricky.

My personal history with 'New Life Church' .. where this scandal's pastor was based ..serves as just another mark in the wall where the religeous element here has burned me.

Still .. the medias here say things like ..::

"Mike Jones has gotten a frosty reception in Colorado Springs...blah blah blah.. "

Why ?? Cuz he was in a unique situation and chose to follow his conscience and do the right thing ??

Well .."That's Colorado Springs fer ya !! Whattah Wacky Place !!"

..anyway..

Leading Liberal & Local bookstores are refusing to sell this book (( a bit suprisingly..)) and big chain Bookstores were not holding signings at all.

Today the local Pride center hosted Mike Jones.... and the turnout was decent and cool.

.. i expressed my appreciation and admiration and he signed my book.

.. I don't care what they say about him..

.. the guy is a hero. And i honestly think it bothers alot of people in this city and some in the state that someone spoke up about something very VERY wrong !!

My tattoo's...if you are familiar with the bible at all then possibly "The Lion of Judah" would have some meaning to you.

"And off of the blocks,

I was headstrong and proud,

at the front of the line for the card-carrying, highbrowed.

With both eyes fastened tight,

yet unscarred from the fight.

Running at full tilt, my sword pulled from its hilt.

It's funny how these things can slip away,

our frail deeds, the last will wave good-bye.

It's funny how the hope will bleed away,

the citadels we build and fortify. Good-Bye.

Night came and I broke my stride,

I swallowed hard, but never cried.

When grace was easy to forget,

I'd denounce the hypocrites,

casting first stones, killing my own.

You would unscale my blind eyes,

and I stood battered, but more wise,

fighting to accelerate,

shaking free from crippling weight.

With resilience unsurpassed,

I clawed my way to You at last.

And on my knees, I wept at Your feet,

I finally believed, that You still loved me."

What Caused the Civil War?: Reflections on the South and Southern History

The Confederate flag embodies the conflict. For some white Southerners, no other symbol seems as rich with meaning. When pressed to explain that meaning, some defenders speak in inarticulate and deeply felt terms of heritage, of great-great-grandfathers, of rights, of hypocritical Yankees, in language with no power to persuade anyone who does not already agree with them. When they speak of slavery, they speak of it only to deny that it had anything at all to do with the war, refusing to accept overwhelming evidence that runs counter to their beliefs. To the defenders of the battle flag, to be ashamed of the symbol is to be ashamed of who they are, of who their family has been. It seems a matter of all or nothing, of denying that history changes the meaning of things.

To other defenders of the flag, the explicit connection to the past is not essential. They are not certain that they had ancestors who fought in the Civil War, yet they display the flag with even greater frequency and ardor than any Son of the Confederacy (indeed, to the Sons' dismay) for the flag to them is a rebel flag. They are often rebels with only a vague cause; the flag is such a multipurpose symbol precisely because it is so vague. It is a sign of resistance to the boss, to Southern yuppies, to the North, to blacks, to liberals, to any kind of political correctness. In their eyes, the rebel flag stands for the same thing that they imagine it stood for in 1861: Leave Me the Hell Alone.

The Confederate flag is a topic of such debate and divisiveness in the South today because it denies all that black and white Southerners shared, because it reduces the South to a one-time and one-sided political identity. The South and the Confederacy covered the same territory, shared a critical part of history, but they have never been synonymous--not even between 1861 and 1865. Confederate symbolism has spread to places that were staunchly Unionist in the Civil War itself; drive through the mountain counties of the South, even West Virginia, and notice how many Confederate flags you see, how many people imagine a connection with the Confederacy they have no genealogical or geographical right to claim, how many people seize on what is supposedly a discredited symbol of an aborted nationalism. The Confederacy lives on as a potent symbol, its potency coming from its ambiguity and instability of meaning, a meaning that was not unambiguous even in 1861.

That same ambiguity has permitted white Northerners to use the Civil War for another purpose, dubious and simplistic in its own way. Many of them have tended to see themselves ever since the War as the chosen, the redeemed, the real nation; black freedom seems a good not only for its own sake but as an emblem of a larger national destiny and freedom. This role has served to sanctify the North and the West and to make the South a sink of iniquity, a focus and explanation for what is lacking in the country in general. The Civil War seems to many white non-Southerners to absolve their ancestors from complicity in slavery for the 250 years before Appomattox. It is this willful forgetfulness that gives credence to charges of Northern hypocrisy from diehard defenders of the Confederacy, who insist that slavery was a national crime and not a purely sectional one.

. . . Southern history is made up of the things that have happened and are happening on this artificially bounded piece of real estate, however contradictory they may have been and remain. Southern history bespeaks a place that is more complicated than the stories we tell about it.

What We Talk About When We Talk About the South

www.enotes.com/what-caused-civil-war-salem/what-caused-ci...

Historian Edward L. Ayers's compilation explores the essence of the South and its history. The writings in What Caused the Civil War?: Reflections on the South and Southern History feature personal reflections on what it meant to grow up in the south, the nature of the south, and Ayers's computer-related experiences in creating the Valley of the Shadow Project. Other essays grapple with the Civil War and the complexities of its causes as well as Reconstruction.

We talked to Ushar Zagros, the local commander of the PKK on the frontlines in Kirkuk. He was there with Kurds from Syria, Iran, Turkey and Iraq in a house they use as a military base. In the house they live, cook and sleep. Zagros, himself a Kurd from Iran, fights with PKK since he was 15, in all four parts of historical Kurdistan. Even today PKK is fighting on all front lines.

Since last summer Zagros is making the difference with the Iraqi Kurds for the international anti-IS coalition in northern Iraq. Meanwhile his comrades a few hundred kilometers north are bombed by a partner within the same coalition: Turkey. How does this man feel about that?

'Why should we now suddenly feel outraged? The hypocritical attitude towards the Kurds is not new. You divided our country into four parts, you support Turkey that imprisons our leader Abdullah Ocalan, you label me a terrorist. I got used to that, but we are tired of proving to the world that we are not terrorists. We already gave 5000 martyrs in the fight against IS and we are terrorists? Ask the Yezidis of Shengal who saved them. We have nothing more to prove. It is the Americans who have to prove whether they are with the Kurds or with the terrorists.'

Zagros stressed that PKK does not want to change the borders of the existing countries, but that the Kurds want autonomy in those countries.

During our conversation gunshots sounded in the distance. Later on, we hear that female PKK snipers were firing on IS positions. Cooking in the kitchen in the base: a man.

Hollywood, Madison Avenue, and the mainstream media celebrate Ernesto ?Che? Guevara as a saint, a sex symbol, and a selfless martyr. But their ideas about Che ? whose face adorns countless T-shirts and posters ? are based on the lies of Fidel Castro?s murderous dictatorship.

Che?s hipster fans are classic ?useful idiots,? the name Stalin gave to foolish Westerners who parroted his lies about communism. And their numbers will only increase after a new biopic is released this fall, starring Benicio Del Toro.

But as Humberto Fontova reveals in this myth-shattering book, Che was actually a bloodthirsty executioner, a military bumbler, a coward, and a hypocrite. In fact, Che can be called the godfather of modern terrorism.

Fontova reveals:

? How he longed to destroy New York City with nuclear missiles.

? How he persecuted gays, blacks, and religious people.

? How he loved material wealth and private luxuries, despite his image as an ascetic.

Are Che fans like Angelina Jolie, Jesse Jackson, Carlos Santana, and Johnny Depp too ignorant to realize they?ve been duped? Or too anti-American to care?

Willy Wonka attempts to grasp the fuzzy logic of the left.

Peru Cusco

One of the most enticing parts of southern Peru, Cusco (Cuzco / Qosq'o) really does have it all when it comes to tourism, and once served as the capital of the actual Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo), until the early 16th century.

Cusco is close to so many Peruvian sights and attractions, including the Andes mountains, the Sacred Valley (Urubamba Valley) and also the world-famous lost Inca city of Machu Picchu. Do note that both the relatively high altitude of Cusco and Machu Picchu may take a little getting used to, so don't be in a rush to sightsee.

Peru Cusco

is always filled with international tourists, and the central Plaza de Armas is surrounded by hotels, shops, tourist bureaux and eateries, catering to the every whim of its ever-increasing tourism industry, which has grown dramatically over the past 25 years. However, the cobblestone streets of Cusco are still present and offer a taste of its past, with many now forming the actual foundations of more modern buildings and colonial mansions.

Peru Cusco Information

Kind and hospitable, the city of Cusco is the capital of the department with the same name, and a cosmopolite city that is oriented to tourism.

It was the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire, a sacred city and the government center of the four wide regions making up the splendid Incan Empire, which ended up comprising a great part of the current territories of Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Chile. It holds the titles of: "Archaeological Capital of America", "Cultural Heritage of the Humanity" besides being the "Historical Capital of Peru".

Peru Cusco History

According to some chroniclers, during its first centuries it was known as Akamama, which means "Mother of Chicha" (chicha = a type of fermented corn beer). Once it became the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo, it was called Cusco, a name that derives from the Quechua word Qosqo, which in Spanish means "navel" or "center". It was Inca Garcilazo de la Vega who defined it as the "Center or navel of the world".

After the Spanish invasion, in 1533, the name turned into Cuzco, a contemptuous word that meant "hypocrite", "hunchbacked" and "small dog". This constituted an attempt to minimize or satirize the city's significance.

However, at the end of the XX Century, an important social movement struggled so this old city could maintain its original name, and on June 20th 1990, Qosqo was declared the official name.

Peru Cusco

Cusco is a territory of encounters that served as a support for the development of certain cultures that are as important as the Incan culture itself. However, it is also a sort of geographical hinge, a gate among the mountains, the Amazonian jungle and the large Andean high plateau, which explains its ecologic diversity and the backgrounds' contrast. Its great mountains are mixed with high tablelands, undulating pampas, deep valleys and Amazonian plains.

Despite having all the services to fully satisfy the demands from the enormous flow of tourists that visit it, the supply decreases in the provinces and surroundings, so we recommend you to get all your provisions in the department's capital.

Peru Cusco

Cusco is still an important regional center with a potential regarding both resources and its privileged position in ways and roads, where there is still a lot to be explored. Not only is Cusco significant due to its archaeological monuments but because of the richness of its land and people.

Peru Cusco Tours

In this guide, we offer interesting and useful information on the Imperial City of the country: an essential travel tool for tourists. It has information on museums, art galleries, publications, history, tourism and environment, among others.

Walkin' On The Sun -- Smash Mouth - 1997

It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke

And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony

And teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars

Hey I know it's just a song but it's spice for the recipe

This is a love attack I know it went out but it's back.

It's just like any fad it retracts before impact

And just like fashion it's a passion for the with it and hip

If you got the goods they'll come and buy it just to stay in the clique

[Chorus:]

So don't delay act now supplies are running out

Allow if you're still alive six to eight years to arrive

And if you follow there may be a tomorrow

But if the offer's shun you might as well be walkin' on the sun

Twenty-five years ago they spoke out and they broke out

Of recession and oppression and together they toked

And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire

Just singin' and clappin' - man what the hell happened?

Then some were spellbound some were hellbound

Some they fell down and some got back up and

Fought back 'gainst the melt down

And their kids were hippie chicks all hypocrites

Because fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it

[Repeat Chorus]

It ain't no joke when a mama's handkerchief is soaked

With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked

The bond is broke up so choke up and focus on the close up

Mr. Wizard can't perform no godlike hocus-pocus

So don't sit back kick back and watch the world get bushwhacked

News at 10:00 your neighborhood is under attack

Put away the crack before the crack puts you away

You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate...

Response to Article:

"Village that towers above China" by

Jonathan Watts

November 14, 2011

www.chinadialogue.net/article/show/single/en/4623-Village...

Comment by Philip McMaster:

People favourably respond to Change

Generally speaking, people don't change for the better when criticized. But they do respond favourably to praise.

Huaxi Cun is not the worst place in China, and it has been following and sometimes leading the objectives and trends of the government and Chinese people - first it was to get rich - and clean up the mess later. We did this in the West on our own schedule, some Chinese are doing it now under the generally hypocritical pressure of the global community.

An aspirational monument - if you choose to see it that way..

When I was invited to Huaxi Cun for the inauguration of the “Village in the Sky”, (www.tudou.com/programs/view/05XpJXkiNwI/ ) I spoke of the new tower as a beacon for all to see, not in terms of opulence and excess, but as a towering 3 element "Symbol of Sustainability" - an aspirational symbol rising above all else - including the cookie-cutter villas, the grubby factories, the money focus and the faux world landmarks - to shock and awe viewers into realizing that all monuments have a message – and this one should inspire people to make the connection between Heaven, Earth and the People (Tian, Di, Ren 天地人) and that to achieve Wu Renbao’s “Heaven on Earth”… the Triple-Bottom-Line balance between Society, Environment and Economy (社会,环境,经济)must become Huaxi’s new ethic.

"Now that Huaxi village is rich, what's next?"

Following my presentation, the new building’s architect Ma Xusheng, in turn praised my interpretation of his building’s design, saying that no one had thought of it before, but that “with your new ‘Society, Environment, Economy ‘meaning attached, our building is even richer”.

At a private dinner with village leaders the evening before, I had shamelessly asked: “Now that Huaxi village is rich, what’s next?” – hoping to encourage them to expound on how they were going to share Huaxi’s wealth and expertise with other communities and to build sustainable enterprises based on a model ecological civilisation… however the response was understandable, as a bit more thinking is required; and considering most people’s focus was still on showing off and celebrating what they have achieved so far, the answer was a simple “Gambei!”
