PT: I understand, but nobody's going to be happy if the two of you aren't back here before Director Steadfast docks.

COL: (smiling) Too bad.
CDJ: (as she preps the ship for departure, recalling crew) Why is the Director coming to Stonehenge, Plush? That sounds serious.
PT: He suspects we have a spy somewhere in IRC. A spy working for an unidentified, hostile alien presence that just kidnapped a group of scientists from Hypatia, who are working on the Plicare experiment.
MSS: (seems to sober all on her own) Plicare?

Director Steadfast: It seems impossible, but if the names on this list are accurate, aside from Agent Sylvan, you're right. And that means someone in the IRC, close to the experiment, must be working with the unknown aliens.
PT: Why do you say that?
DS: Hypatia is covered with meeting places, and all of them are filled with IRC denizens from all over the galaxy, but this ship was in the exact spot, at the exact time, when the majority of scientists working on the Plicare experiment happened to be meeting? I know coincidences happen, but this defies those kinds of odds. There's got to be a spy. It's the only thing that makes sense.
PT: What are we going to do about it?
DS: Are Jetsam and Sky there?
PT: No, they're on shore leave in the Carousel Corona.
DS: Recall them to Stonehenge. I'll be on the next launch.
PT: Yes, sir. (DS' hologram vanishes, and is replaced by COL's) Loqui?
COL: Yes, Plush?
PT: Get the Frigus Iustitia on the hol for me. And Loqui? Make it my private scramble.

AR: This is IRC Agent Rhoda, stationed on Hypatia! We've been attacked by a gigantic hand! It reached out of the sky and grabbed several scientists, and my partner!
COL: (frowning) Agent Rhoda, confirm; a giant hand?
AR: I know how it sounds! I think it was some sort of focused energy field, but it was shaped like a giant, diabolical hand! It snatched up several scientists who were meeting, and IRC Agent Sylvan! Then the cloud-like field camoflaging the ship dissipated and the ship escaped!
COL: What kind of ship?
AR: Unknown! I've never seen anything like it before! Interstellar forces gave chase, but the ship was fast, and it escaped!
COL: What about the scientists, and your partner? Were they killed?
AR: I -- I don't think so. If they just wanted to kill people, they could have used a weapon. This seemed like an abduction.
COL: These scientists, have they been identified? Do you know why they were meeting?
AR: The list of names have been sent to you.
COL: (tilts his head and a hologram list appears before him, that only he can see, by virtue of the eyepiece of the headset he wears) One moment, I'm cross-referencing the names. (in glowing red, the word, CLASSIFIED appears over the names, underscored by the word, PLICARE, COL looks alarmed) Thank you, Agent Rhoda. We'll assume control of the investigation.

The School of Athens (Italian: Scuola di Atene) is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1509 and 1511 as part of a commission by Pope Julius II to decorate the rooms now called the Stanze di Raffaello in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.
The fresco depicts a congregation of ancient mathematicians, philosophers, and scientists, with Plato and Aristotle featured in the center. The identities of most figures are ambiguous or discernable only through subtle details or allusions; among those commonly identified are Socrates, Pythagoras, Archimedes, Heraclitus, Averroes, Euclid, and Zarathustra. Additionally, Italian artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo are believed to be portrayed through Plato and Heraclitus, respectively. Raphael included a self-portrait beside Ptolemy. Hypatia is the only notable character who is looking directly at the viewer in the artwork.
The painting is notable for its use of accurate perspective projection, a defining characteristic of Renaissance art, which Raphael learned from Leonardo; likewise, the themes of the painting, such as the rebirth of Ancient Greek philosophy and culture in Europe were inspired by Leonardo's individual pursuits in theatre, engineering, optics, geometry, physiology, anatomy, history, architecture and art.

While Frigus Iustitia makes an emergency docking with Stonehenge Intergalactic Spacefort, another drama plays out on a planet currently unknown to the Interstellar Reciprocity Coalition, Vhipernhal. The yellow-green planet is partially enveloped by a strange stellar, mist-like phenomenon which the scientists of Vhipernhal have been unable to identify. There is one thing of which they are certain, the phenomenon is killing the people of their world.
King Durus stands alone in his throne room, gazing at wall where a display of Vhipernhal, as seen from space, is displayed, while he waits for word from the spaceship he sent to Hypatia on an urgent assignment.
Princess Bhonumm Durus: (in a lavish gown, sweeps into the throne room) Father?
King Durus: What is it, Bhon?
PBD: The Mhanuss has returned from Hypatia.
KD: Have all of the alien scientists been recovered?
PBD: All but one, Father. The last alien was rescued by --
KD: (interrupts) I will not hear excuses for failure, Bhon! My order was to secure ALL of the scientists. The fact that they failed to do as I commanded is all I need to know.
PBD: Father, be reasonable. The Mhanuss nearly exhausted its fuel, remaining unseen by the aliens. They're fortunate to have returned at all.
KD: You find me unreasonable, Bhon? I find it unreasonable for you to defend their failure as "fortunate." Our family rules from a position of strength, not compromises.
PBD: But, Father --
KD: (interrupts) The people of Vhipernhal are dying! OUR people, Bhon! Our sole focus must be to save them, at any cost!
PBD: I remember when you would weigh the costs, and try to balance the scales as best you could.
KD: If that's true, it was only because the extinction of our species was not at risk. Where are the alien scientists?
PBD: They're in isolation, in the crew quarters at Primis Base.
KD: Crew quarters? Have them moved to the nearest detention center for questioning.
PBD: Why, Father? If you seek their cooperation, mistreatment isn't going to convince them to help us.
KD: (tilts his head) Perhaps you're right. Erotog!
Erotog: (a king's guard steps into the throne room) Yes, Majesty?
KD: (staring at PBD) Remove the scientists from the crew quarters, and take them to the Quaerere.
E: (with a tiny head bow) Yes, Majesty.
PBD: No, Father! Not that! I'll have them moved to the detention center! KD: Erotog, I've changed my mind. Withdraw.
E: Yes, Majesty. (and he withdraws from the throne room, to whatever alcove he occupies while awaiting his king's commands)
KD: I am king, Bhon. My commands will be obeyed -- by everyone in my kingdom. If these aliens have the answer to the survival of our people, then I will have that answer, no matter the cost to the aliens. I didn't want to arrive at this place in history, where we must be ruthless in order to survive.
PBD: We arrived at this place more than a year ago, Father. A year after the Anomaly began to engulf our planet, and you appointed the Quaerere. (she turns and exits the throne room)

V3Tech: (another feline alien nods at HC's hol image) Ready -- (suddenly hisses, his ears going flat, as a giant hand reaches through the ceiling, snatching up one of the scientists) Get to the vee pad! (snarls at the others)
HC: What is it? Vee Three, what's wrong?
Aboard the Frigus Iustitia, Captain Jetsam and Major Sky exchange concerned looks, because they only see HC, although they can hear her and everyone in the vee room.
V3T: A hand! A giant hand! It's taken one of the scientists!
MSS leaps from her seat and dashes to the bridge door.
CDJ: Scrummy!
MSS: It's the diabolical hand, Pips! I have to help! (and she runs to the vee room of the Frigus Iustitia, ordering their tech to vee her down to Hypatia)
CDJ: Hypatia Control! I have an Agent on her way to you, now!
MSS: (the artificial wormhole created by the vermisforamen deposits her in the Hyapatia Vee Three room where the diabolical hand is disappearing through the ceiling with Dr. Ankter, leaving only Dr. Litefful in the room) Dhee, this way!
DL: (takes a step toward MSS, but the hand returns) Look out! (shouts a warning to MSS as the hand grabs at her)
MSS: (leaps aside, firing at the hand) Dhee! Get to the vee, now!
CDJ: Vee tech! Get them off the planet as soon as they're on the pad!
DL: (dashes past MSS and the hand) Let's go!
MSS: (flips and rolls past the hand, firing again, landing on the pad) Let's go! Let's go!
CDJ: Vee tech, now! Now! Now!
VT: Activated and in progress.
The hand reaches for MSS and DL, but the vee transfers them back to the Frigus Iustitia and they are standing in the ship's vee room.
VT: Captain, they're aboard!
CDJ: Leaving orbit! Tach one!
The Frigus Iustitia vanishes from orbit around Hypatia, racing back to Stonehenge Spacefort with the only remaining scientist of the Plicare experiment aboard. An Aquarian tormented by a mysterious presence in her mind.

Between Aquarius and Luna Duo, revolving languidly, like an ivory Ferris wheel, the Stonehenge Intergalactic Spacefort monitors star systems both near and remote, ceaselessly seeking extra-terrestrial life for friendship, and maintaining vigilance for potential threats to the Interstellar Reciprocity Coalition, IRC.
One of the planets belonging to the IRC is Hypatia, a garden planet of serene beauty where philosophers, scientists, and artists from all over the galaxy live and work in harmony. But something unexpected and terrifying is about to shatter that tranquility, drawing Terran IRC Civilian Oversight Chief Plush Tusch, Terran IRC Captain Debris Jetsam, and IRC Aquarian Major Scrumptious Sky into an evil web intended to snare the entire galaxy!

Scientists, and an IRC Agent, kidnapped by a diabolical hand that reached out of the skies of Hypatia, and the possibility of a spy in the IRC working for a hostile alien force summons Captain Debris Jetsam and
Major Scrumptious Sky to the Stonehenge Intergalactic Spacefort from their shore leave in the Carousel Corona.
CDJ: (seated at a conference table with Scrummy & Plush) Plush, I haven't been able to get anything out of Scrummy about this Plicare experiment, but I can tell she knows something. Can you explain it to me?
PT: Sorry, Pips, it's above your security clearance.
CDJ: But not Scrummy's? How is that possible?
PT: You know Aquarians, Pips. They don't keep secrets from each other, and there are Aquarians working on the experiment.
MSS: What one knows, all know, in the "fluid mind." (just then, the door slides open and Director Steadfast enters)
CDJ: (to MSS) He just saved you from being tickled into spilling some of that fluid mind information. (grins as MSS' eyebrows shoot up in alarm) Good to see you, Director.
DS: You too, Debris, Scrumptious, Plush.
MSS: Very good to see you, Director. (fairly purrs) Love the new look.
DS: (sits near Plush, clearing his throat) Plush, were they briefed about the kidnapping?
PT: Yes, sir.
DS: First, note in the Stonehenge log that I am upgrading Captain Jetsam's security clearance to Factor Six-Nine.
CDJ: Nice. (gets a glance from DS) I mean, nice, sir.
PT: Logged.
DS: A team of scientists were sent to Hypatia to work on increasing the capacity of the vermisforamen currently in use.
PT: Being able to vee more than 7 tons at a time would be a boon to the shipping industry.
CDJ: And planetary defense.
DS: An accidental discovery, code named, Plicare, would surpass the perfection of the tachyon field.
(CDJ and PT stare at each other, thunderstruck by this statement.)
MSS: (smiles at DS) Our people had beards, in our distant past. Not anymore. It gives you such a -- primal aspect. I like it.
CDJ: (saving DS from MSS' flirtations) How would increasing the vee's capacity do that?
DS: Plicare wouldn't increase the vee's capacity, it would increase travel velocity.
MSS: Actually, it would decrease velocity, but increase distance and lower time.
PT/CDJ: What?
DS: Scrumptious is right. Plicare isn't a speed, it's about using wormholes to fold space. If the Plicare experiment succeeds, travel between planets could take as little time as it takes to step across a line drawn in the sand.
CDJ: Plush, I'm going to ask you to pick up the pieces of my mind, that were just blown all over the spacefort.
PT: Right there, with you.
DS: Naturally, we scattered the scientists, and had each working on specific aspects of the experiment. Their locations have been under strict secrecy and security. This was the first time they'd been brought together, on Hypatia, to talk about assembling a prototype.
PT: How many people knew where they were meeting, and why?
DS: You're looking at him.
PT: That's not good.
CDJ: Well, you, and every Aquarian. No offense, Scrummy.
MSS: None taken, since we didn't know.
DS: She's right. We didn't tell any of the scientists where they were going, just that they were being relocated to more secure locations.
CDJ: But they found out eventually. When did they realize where they were, and why?
DS: The definitely knew once they reached landfall on Hypatia, but it's possible they knew when they were in orbit. Either way, it was less than a day before their abduction.
PT: I hate to say it, but everyone must be looking at you, sir. (to DS)
DS: Of course, they are. So would I, if the roles were reversed.
CDJ: How many Aquarians were kidnapped?
DS: Only one. Once the hand grabbed him, the others instantly knew the danger, and concealed themselves.
MSS: (when CDJ eyes her) They had no defenses. Hiding made the most sense. They pulled others into hiding, as well.
CDJ: So, why don't you communicate with the Aquarian scientist? Ask him where they are?
MSS: Turgis Infigo is sleeping. He has slept since the hand lifted him from Hypatia.
DS: We don't know if that's because the kidnappers know about the "fluid mind" or if all of their victims are sleeping.
PT: Guarding sleeping prisoners is certainly easier than guarding conscious ones.
CDJ: What are our orders?
DS: Get to Hypatia. Talk to the scientists, Agent Rhoda, anybody you can think of. Search for a connection to the scientists' arrival and abduction. Whatever you find, do NOT report to me, or anyone else.
PT: Why?
DS: We probably have a spy in our midst, and I know my name is at the top of a very short list. You'll have to work on your own, and tell no one about Plicare.
CDJ: Except the scientist?
DS: Not even the scientists. I want them to think you're just looking into the abduction, that you have no idea what the special significance of these particular scientists is. (looks at MSS) Obviously, the Aquarians will know, we'll need them to pass along any information they come up with, to you, Scrumptious.
MSS: Yes, sir.

The obelisks were named in honor of Cleopatra because of her famed beauty and connections to well-known Romans. Plus, the name had a certain glamorous ring to it. The obelisks in New York and London are made of red granite from the quarries of Aswan with each stone weighing approximately 224 tons. The obelisks were constructed in 1450 BC in the city of Heliopolis for the Pharoah Thutmose III (1481-1425 BC). They are 68 feet (21m) tall.
The Cleopatra’s Needle of New York was erected in Central Park on February 22, 1881. It had been given to the US Consul General stationed in Cairo as a gift to the United States from the Egyptian Khedive (a title equivalent to a viceroy) as a gesture of gratitude for the US remaining neutral while Great Britain and France vied for control of the Egyptian government. The obelisk had been moved from its original home in Heliopolis to Alexandria in 12 BC where was set up in the temple built by Cleopatra in honor of Marc Anthony. Sometime later, the obelisk toppled into the sand; however, this had the positive effect of preserving the hieroglyphs for modern researchers.
For 3000 years, the dry desert air preserved the legacy of the pharaohs. Unfortunately, it has not been well maintained in the US. Since its arrival, numerous pockmarks have emerged and the hieroglyphs have faded, most likely due to the rain, snow, and acidity of the polluted New York City air. In 2011, the then minister of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, threatened to take back the obelisk if it was not better looked after: “If the Central Park Conservancy and the City of New York cannot properly care for this obelisk,” he wrote in an open letter to officials in New York, “I will take the necessary steps to bring this precious artifact home and save it from ruin.” In response, the city financed a $500,000 restoration of the obelisk.
History
The Caesareum of Alexandria is an ancient temple in Alexandria, Egypt. It was conceived by Cleopatra VII of the Ptolemaic kingdom, the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, to honour her first known lover Julius Caesar. The edifice was finished by the Roman Emperor Augustus, after he defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in Egypt. He destroyed all traces of Antony in Alexandria, and apparently dedicated the temple to his own cult.
Converted to a Christian church in the late 4th century, the Caesareum was the headquarters of Cyril of Alexandria, the Patriarch of Alexandria from 412 to 444.
The philosopher and mathematician Hypatia was murdered at the Caesareum by a Christian mob in 415; they stripped her naked and tore her to pieces.
Elements of the temple survived until the 19th century. Cleopatra's Needles, obelisks from the temple, now stand in Central Park in New York City and on the Thames Embankment, in London;
Today, a large statue of the Alexandrine nationalist leader Saad Zaghloul (1859–1927) stands on the Caesareum site.

An unidentified voice in the liquid mind of all Aquarians. Confusion swirls and eddies as they seek to comprehend something that has never happened before.
And on the bridge of Frigus Iustitia, Major Scrumptious Sky is about to break a 1 Ma tradition with the only Terran she considers as close as family, Captain Debris Jetsam.
CDJ: Vee operator reports everyone aboard. Ready to tach it up, Scrummy?
MSS: T field generating. All stations report ready.
CDJ: Navigator reports T plan for Hypatia logged. Proceed at tach one.
MSS: Tach one activated. (the starfield on the forward screen turns purple for a moment, as the ship slips into faster-than-light speed then the computers generate a generic representation of the starfield between the ship and its destination)
CDJ: AIP in control. (looks at MSS) Is that a frown?
MSS: My species cannot "frown."
CDJ: looks like a frown.
MSS: Our facial muscles are not the same as yours, and you know that. My expression is called, kwul. My thoughts are -- disturbed.
CDJ: That's a first. I'm a captive audience. Tell me more.
MSS: You're making a joke, but this is serious. I -- we are troubled.
CDJ: You mean, "we?" All Aquarians, "we?" (gets a nod from MSS) That's serious. Okay, I'm serious, now. What's going on?
MSS: (turns to CDJ) I have many friends, Pips, but I think of you as family.
CDJ: (smiles) Well, thank you, Scrummy. I like to think of you as the dangerous, popular older sister I never had.
MSS: (also smiles) There are many secrets we don't reveal to off-worlders, but I trust you not to reveal what I am going to tell you. This has been held in private for longer than Terrans have been civilized.
CDJ: You know I want to make a comment that some species would argue that Terrans still aren't civilized, but I am being serious.
MSS: (smiles) I understand. Pips, there is no other species like Aquarians. There are other telepaths, empaths, and so on, but the fluid mind, as off-worlders call it, is unique to us. It is more than telepathy or empathy, but it is not a single mind. Our thoughts flow, eddy, whirl, and ebb. But no one else may swim in the sea of our thoughts -- until now.
CDJ: What do you mean?
MSS: There is a mind swimming in our sea of thoughts, and we do not know who it is.
CDJ: (looking alarmed) An invader? Somebody broke into your collective thoughts?
MSS: Someone has targeted one of the scientists on Hypatia. One of the scientists working on Plicare, Dr. Litefful. She has isolated her mind as best she can. Think of her mind, right now, as a tide pool, and there is someone standing in it.
CDJ: Does she know why?
MSS: Before isolating herself, she formed the opinion that it had to do with Plicare. That is not the imminent threat, Pips.
CDJ: It's not? Some potentially dangerous alien is after the secrets of Plicare and you can't figure out who it is? It could be the aliens who kidnapped the others!
MSS: The imminent danger is to Dr. Litefful. Our ocean cannot become polluted by this invader, but the tide must rise, just as it ebbs. And when the ocean rises-
CDJ: It fills the tide pools.
MSS: (nods) This crisis has never before faced our people, but we know what must be done. The ocean must not reclaim the tide pool.
CDJ: But, no one can hold back the tide.
MSS: So, the tide pool must not be there when the tide returns.
CDJ: Wait, are you saying -- What are you saying?
(at that moment, the forward screen glows purple then displays an image of the planet, Hypatia as the Frigus Iustitia enters orbit)
MSS: We have arrived.
