Valerie and her horse needed no introduction for everyone knew who they were because they won every race. Might not be the fanciest team but they were the fastest. I watched them grow up together and they sure had a special relationship. Ran into her recently and she said this horse is now retired. Best horse she ever had, bar none. I know what it's like to miss riding a retired horse, irreplaceable...

In case you're wondering what that corner building is,see the link below.The 857 Broadway building in Manhattan was once a mansion belonging to a Robert Goelet who, with his brother Peter,inherited a large fortune from their father Peter P.Goelet after his death.The mansion,purchased by Peter Goelet,was built in 1846 and later given to Robert.The house originally had a masonry facade,but it was stripped in 1884 and given an up-to-date cast iron front.After the death of Robert in 1879,the building's bottom and top floors were converted into retail and office space where it had occupants like jewelers,a photography studio,and a mail-order business up until the the early 1900s.After suffering much neglect in the 20th century,the building was renovated in 2005 and given new life again.Today,the building is still used for retail with space on the first floor.The top floors can either be used for office or apartment rental.The Goelet family trace their NY roots back to a John Goelet,a Huguenot who came here in 1718 daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-1846-no-857-br...

The head end of the train that I posted yesterday sported the Boston & Maine 390. Guilford bought 3 such units off from Norfolk Southern that were originally part of the Illinois Terminal. The Delaware & Hudson Albany main looks pretty good here at the east side of Bainbridge. NY as our Mt. Tom coal train is really on the move after a great run over Beldon Hill.
