The Siberian Husky is a beautiful dog breed with a thick coat that comes in a multitude of colors and markings. Their blue or multi-colored eyes and striking facial masks only add to the appeal of this breed, which originated in Siberia.
Siberian Huskies have captured the imagination of the masses, as well as artists, writers, and film producers, with their eye-catching looks and awe-inspiring talents.
This medium-size working dog possesses power and athleticism. First developed as sled dogs — some are still used in this capacity — Huskies are remarkable dogs — and their ability to learn is staggering.
The Alaskan husky (distinct from the Siberian husky) is a breed of medium-sized working sled dog, developed specifically for its pulling ability. Alaskan huskies are the most commonly used type of dog for competitive sled dog racing, both in short-distance sprint racing as well as long-distance expedition races.
The Alaskan husky is not an officially recognized breed by any kennel club, nor does it have a formal breed standard.[6] Unlike breeds developed for the show ring, the Alaskan husky is instead a product of careful selection for desirable sled dog traits from various other breeds, such as aptitude for pulling, endurance, speed, intelligence, appetite, and tolerance of extreme weather.
This meet and greet was as near as we got to the sled trails as the conditions were too icy on our trip. Having seen the speed that these dogs pull I think we probably dodged a bullet!
I was away last week visiting some very good friends in Finland along with their husky and four young puppies. The puppies are about 6 weeks old and full of life. It was great fun to watch them playing in the snow.
We were very fortunate that it snowed in Helsinki just before we arrived after a warmer than usual Winter with very little snow. The temperatures dropped to minus 10 degrees C which was perfect for the activities we wanted to do including skiing at nearby resorts and skating on a frozen lake. We also took a boat across to the old city of Tallinn, Estonia.
Storm. Had a nice run yesterday, 5 below zero.
She doesn't much like to take breaks on the trail. Gets a bit impatient with me and the camera. Always frosts up way more than the others, must be something about the way she breathes. She usually frosts up her running partner too.

Taiga is my friend and daily hiking companion and co-author of many of the photos I have published on Flickr. Without her and her predecessor Sharka, I wouldn't want to leave the house for our daily long walks without looking at the weather :)
