I believe this is a female Anna's Hummingbird casting her tongue, briefly, for an insect, perhaps. The bold and brash Rufous Hummingbirds seem to have moved north in their wide circle back to to Mexico. The Anna's seem to linger all year,

Thanks for your comments.

Female or juvenile. Landed on a tree rope. In flight, next photo.

Many thanks for your kind comments and support.

Suddenly, as I watched six geese who seem to live in the back forty by day, I spied this jewel! I’m excited because I don’t see the details on these fast moving hummies through a scope or binoculars.

Didn't want to raise the ISO this time, so the wings fluttering looks a tad blurred. Sacrifice shutter speed for aperture or ISO; one or the other two. But the gimbal-design on the tripod is quite sturdy, luckily.

850mm, f/6.7, 1/500, ISO 9000, no flash

I think I might have to make a calendar using all the hummies picture I have,

Can't have enough hummy magic; female or juvenile Rufous Hummingbird’s back view in the rain. Aren’t these tiny birds amazing?

“During their long migrations, Rufous Hummingbirds make a clockwise circuit of western North America each year. They move up the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Canada. As early as July they may start south again, traveling down the chain of the Rocky Mountains.”

(Pardon the noise. I'm not terribly skilled at removing it.)

I spent the entire day (in bed) yesterday editing one of each kind of hummingbird I saw in Ecuador last week.

BTW: let me know if you'd be interested in a digital or a printed poster so I can see if it's worth making a print run.

New crocosmia buds photographed by sunset light last night. This fascinating plant is so new to me. (Hummies love it, too.) My husband had his 200mm macro lens, and we kept vying for the last slanted golden rays of light.

The tiny budding main frond measures 5.4 cm /2.16in—well, it did when I photographed this one. I first had in mind to enter this in Macro Monday for this week’s theme. We had such fun taking photos.

Beautiful rainy morning. Some seem to receive too much rain; the Pacific Northwest, at least where we are, needs more.

'The Rufous Hummingbird makes one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird in the world, as measured by body size. At just over 3 inches long, its roughly 3,900-mile / 6276 km movement (one-way) from Alaska to Mexico is equivalent to 78,470,000 body lengths. In comparison, the 13-inch-long / 32-cm-long Arctic Tern's one-way flight of about 11,185 mi / 18000 km is only 51,430,000 body lengths.' (AAB)

Many thanks for your kind support.

Last night at sunset.

As shot, slight crop. So vibrant! Grown to the tip of the stems, now.

Thanks for looking. I could hear hummingbird wings whirring about my head. I left.

Here's our Anna's Hummingbird (Calypte anna). I call it ours as it has taken up permanent residence in our yard.

This morning, after a long number of days, the sun came out.

Hummy was quite enjoying the sun and his feathers glistened like jewels!

Yhe season is now underway here, we have already 3 males and 2 females hummies. We are very happy

Hayfever, but beautiful to me.

Two hours in the blind, but the hummy did not return. Not a single butterfly. But good to use a good lens most often left in the closet!

Thanks for looking. And your empathic sneezes.

These feeders supplied sugar water to several species of hummies.. Any ID help is greatly appreciated.

Could this be a broad-tailed hummingbird (because of the white neck)?? (I don't think we have ruby-throated hummies here in central Arizona.)

coming soon! XD

My friend Hummy was making too much fun watermelon items so I tried making it together.

Then we got very fun items.

We would be happy if everyone enjoyed it.

This is a very young male Anna's hummingbird. It is exciting to see him growing up and I hope he will always continue to return for meals here.

A cherry blossom is the flower of any of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is called sakura after the Japanese (桜 or 櫻; さくら)

The hummies are migrating thru here (I was told) and there must be 20 birds at each of 2 feeders (at 2 locations). They are going thru about 12-16 cups of sugar water a day/feeder. I've become a cook slave to the hummingbirds!!!

This is a broad tailed hummingbird,

the tail makes it a delight to watch.

It adds control and stability to flight.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly BACKWARDS...

#1 Winner of Lakeshore Camera Club's 2025 Fauna Competition

My beautiful Butterfly Bush which was the backdrop for many years for my hummingbird photos, died this year; producing only three stems of flowers. Not sure if it was from old age, too much water or to much heat. But my hummingbirds still come looking for a sweet drink.

My hummies don't need to fret, I am currently working on a new hummingbird garden and hope they like it as much as they did the original one.
