It has been a very, very hot and humid day today in South Western Ontario.

Aulacorhynchus albivitta

(Southern Emerald toucanet / Tucancito Esmeralda)

Like other toucans, the Andean Toucanet is brightly marked and has a large bill. The adult is 30–35 cm (12–14 in) long. The sexes are alike in appearance, although the female generally is smaller and slightly shorter-billed.

The Andean Toucanet is a generally common in humid forest and woodland, mainly at higher elevations.

Peaceful Caturday

Echappée belle dans le marais de Contes qui regroupe, sur 63 hectares, plusieurs étangs hérités de l’exploitation de la tourbe jusqu’au milieu du 20e siècle, ainsi que des prairies humides, des roselières et une grand étendue boisée.

This tour took us to discover the scenic beauty of the humid montane forest and the Andean moorland. Met the continental divide of waters "Divortium Aquarum", located more than 4,000 meters (13,123 ft) above sea level.

Located just 45 minutes from the city of Cuenca. Cajas National Park is one of the ecosystems with the highest concentration of water bodies per km² in the Andean world. We admired the changing vegetation of the national park that starts with the humid montane forest located at 3,160 masl, up to 4,450 masl.

165 lagoons have been counted with more than 1 hectare of surface and 621 with less than 1 hectare. It has several international awards such as: Wetland of International Importance RAMSAR (2002), Area of International Importance for Bird Conservation by IBA (2003) and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2013.

In the tour we enjoyed observing the Andean flora, surrounded by a unique landscape that allowed us to understand the geological process through which our planet passed. This tour led us to a centennial polilepys forest (paper tree).

Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis) Bird of the (wet) meadows, it frequents in Picardy only the regions still dedicated to breeding such as the Picardy maritime plain, the valleys of the Somme and Oise, the Thiérache, .. .

In migration, it is more dispersed in the region. It is immediately spotted by its "pit pit", emitted in flight. The courtship display of the Meadow Pipits consists of an oblique flight during which the male sings, followed by a "parachute" descent, the tail and the wings spread. Migrants from northern Europe pass by the hundreds or thousands in the region, in autumn and spring.

The image was taken at a local orchid meeting. Another zygopetalum can be seen in the first comment section. It used to be in my collection at home.

Zygopetalum is a genus of the orchid family (Orchidaceae) (subfamily Epidendroideae, tribe Cymbidieae, subtribe Zygopetalinae), consisting of fourteen currently recognized species.

They occur in humid forests at low- to mid-elevation regions of South America, with most species in Brazil.

Most species are epiphytes, but some are terrestrials with glossy, strap-like, plicate leaves, which are apical, oblong or elliptic-lanceolate, acute or acuminate. These orchids have a robust growth form. Their ovoid-conical pseudobulbs are deciduous.

They are known for their ease of culture and are much in demand as excellent cut flowers. Wikipedia

On humid and very cold nights (especially in the lower air layers), the microscopic Ice Crystals, always present in the water vapor contained in the freezing air, become visible even by the human eye, as, with very low temperatures and high umidity, they tend to aggregate forming crystals agglomerates (Diamond Dust) that float in the air, lightly reducing visibility.

The Bloke plateau, located between the municipalities of Cerknica, Loška Dolina and Loško Polje, represents the easternmost part of the karst plateau and therefore the most remote corner of the karst region widely understood, but, being it a thin band, this area is located just 60 linear km from Trieste.

It is an area with a continental microclimate, with absolute minimum temperatures close to -30°C and reached from December to March, without forgetting the super-record of April 7, 2021, when the capital of the Bloke, Nova Vas, reached -21° C, updating the absolute minimum for April throughout Slovenia, including high-altitude stations.

Among other things, that value was lower than the minimums that occurred in winter (2020-2021) stopped at-19°C.

Habitat

(Source Wikipedia).

I feel at the happiest when I can witness magic iike this, where the sun creates this beautiful light with water drops.

The weather has become a lot colder now in Fall and despite the colder humid air, this makes it all worth it. Nothing can measure to beauty like this, which is even hard to photograph.

"Little Island at Pier 55 (stylized as Little Island @Pier55) is an artificial island park in the Hudson River west of Manhattan in New York City, adjoining Hudson River Park. Designed by Heatherwick Studio, it is near the intersection of West Street and 13th Street in the Meatpacking District and Chelsea neighborhoods of Manhattan. It is located slightly west of the Manhattan shoreline atop Hudson River Pier 55, connected to Hudson River Park in Manhattan by footbridges at 13th and 14th Streets.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Little Island, a new, free public park pier within the larger Hudson River Park, opened to the public on May 21, 2021, providing New Yorkers and visitors from around the world with a unique green space unlike any other in New York City. Planned in partnership with the Hudson River Park Trust, Little Island was funded primarily through Barry Diller and the Diller-Von Furstenberg Family Foundation through an extraordinary philanthropic gift to the Hudson River Park.
Components of the pier, nestled among more than 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs, include a 687-seat amphitheater and an intimate stage and lawn space, along with dazzling views of other portions of Hudson River Park, New York City and the Hudson River.
Little Island was designed by Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio, with landscape design by Signe Nielsen of MNLA.
Little Island’s distinct exterior is supported by concrete piles. On top of the piles, 132 concrete “tulips” make up the structure of the park. Each tulip’s shape is unique and has a different weight load capacity to hold the soil, lawns, overlooks and trees. The original Pier 54 piles remain to provide habitat for aquatic life."
Note: I finally visited here yesterday. It's something to explore when visiting NYC. Here you can see the WTC (World Trade Center) and Witney Museum in distance. BOY! even it's only in mid-80'sF yesterday, but, the humidly was unbearable. Was planning to visit "Witney Museum" nearby, it was closed (on Tuesdays). Here is close to the "High Line" and "Hudson Yards", so that you can also visit.
The best time to visit here is at dusk, you'd see the sunset in wide open view. My daughter & I were there around 3pm, when it was too sunny and humid.
The Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan (Andigena hypoglauca) inhabits humid highland forests in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Although reasonably common, it is experiencing population declines due to habitat loss. The Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan length is about 46 cm (18 inches).
31-december-2021: during this shot, with the city lights switched on, the darkness was almost complete, but once again the residual brightness of the late twilight manages to illuminate the image sufficiently.
You can see, under the fog, some patches of light that come from the City.
In the stillness the air stratifies and the denser, colder and humid one goes downwards to stagnate and to condense on the Gulf of Venice, that of Trieste, the coasts and the surrounding plains.
Nearly endemic, this species feeds at all strata in humid montane evergreen forests from southern Honduras south to central Panama: from lowlands to cloudforest up to 1000 mts of elevation. They are well known for making altitudinal migrations, a fact which can be sometimes frustrating for those trying to find the birds during the wrong season.
Snowcap is a gracile, spectacular and really tiny hummingbird (2,7 grams, 65 mm size). The male is black overall, but with a unique purple or bronze iridescence on the upperparts. Its namesake white crown is brilliant and constrasts sharply with the dark body plumage. The female is less spectacular, but the combination of small size, green upperparts, clean white underparts, and extensive white in the outer rectrices contrasting with a dark terminal tail band is distinctive. Juvenile males show a striking and chaotic combination of green, purple and white. Males sing from small leks at the edge of the forest during the breeding season.
During this trip, we had 3 main objectives: Quetzal, Snowcap and Agami Heron. These targets were brilliantly achieved by my client in every possible way, during the second week of August =)
If you want to get these 3 gems in your next birding trip, under privileged photographic conditions, together with +100 bird species in 1 week, you don't hesitate to drop me an email to birding@tools.co.cr , or directly to my Whatsapp, +1 506 88129872
Large, spectacular trogon of humid evergreen and pine-evergreen forest in the mountains of southern Mexico and Central America. It is the national bird (and lends its name to the currency) of Guatemala. Usually rather shy, but can be found feeding quietly at fruiting trees. Male is unmistakable with long emerald plumes flowing out behind in flight or blowing in the wind when perched. On females, note large size, grayish head, gray bill, and greatly reduced jagged plumes on the side of the breast. (eBird)
---------------
There he was! Just sitting on branch opposite his nest. Years ago, I had seen a juvenile but had no photos. Now, here was a male Resplendent Quetzel living up to his name. There is a network of local landowners who are supporting the recovery of these beautiful birds. They let a central organization know when there is nesting activity occuring on their property and then the organizaiton arranges for birders and tourists to visit these properties to see the birds. Talk about a win-win-win solution. The homeowner receives a fee for hosting birders and the queztels, the birders see the birds well in natural surroundings and the birds have a safe area to breed and live in. The map location shows the start point of the drive to the quetzel, not the quetzal's actual location.
Turdus albicollis - Large thrush found mostly in the understory of humid forest and old second growth. Many different subspecies occur with significant variation in plumage tones, but all have a white collar, an olive-brown back, a yellow eyering, and a streaked throat. Subspecies vary in the color of the belly (brown or pale) and flanks (presence or absence of orange). The song is also quite variable among subspecies. ebird.org/species/whnrob1
Small, fast-flying parakeet of humid lowlands; restricted to the Pacific slope in the northern parts of its range. Favors forest patches and fairly open country with hedges and tall trees, including towns and villages. Usually seen in pairs or small flocks; associates readily at fruiting and flowering trees with much larger and longer-tailed Orange-fronted Parakeet. Flight is distinctively bounding, not direct like larger parakeets. Plumage is green overall with bronzy shoulders; small orange chin patch is very hard to see. (eBird)
------------
We'd seen or heard these cute little parakeets several times but this was the only time one perched close enough to really see it. As you can see, bananas are a powerful pull, especially in the rain, and a couple of these cuties braved the elements and the cameras for some lunch. Look very closely and you can see a tiny orange line under his bill.
Medium-sized, rather chunky parrot of humid tropical lowlands. Found in rainforest and edge, where easily overlooked in the canopy, feeding quietly on fruits. Most often seen in fast direct flight, low over the canopy in pairs or small groups. In flight, armpits show brilliant red, but often birds are flying too fast to see this. On perched birds, note the brown head (small red ear patch is rarely visible), pale spectacles, and very pale bill. (eBird)
-----------------
We watched this pair for quite a while as they preened and fed each other before copulating. This is after the deed as they both relaxed in a nearby leafy tree. The light rain deterred neither them nor us in the slightest.
