Some history;
In 1943/44, the Town Hall suffered heavy damage from air raids. In 1944, and especially from 1946 on, restoration work pressed ahead, first of all to secure the structure against collapse and then to rebuild it. In 1950, the provisionally restored Coronation Hall was used for the award ceremony of the very first International Charlemagne Prize. One year later, the city council and the Lord Mayor moved back into their historic home.
The main entrance, the portal of the west tower and the windows of the Coronation Hall are all the work of Ewald Mataré. The final touch to the current appearance of the Town Hall was only added in 1979 in the form of the new tower spires designed by Leo Hugot.

I've always liked how the the MFAH (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) placed this painting so that it is framed nicely by the hallway leading through the various galleries. The painting at the end is a portrait of Paul Hugot by artist Gustave Caillebotte.
As always, your comments and faves are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

St. Anthony's Chapel Ruins is in the distance. It's history is obscure but earliest records show the Pope giving money for repairs in 1426 indicating possibly a 14th century period building. It is also said to have been rectangular plan with a tower.

Studio of H. Lagriffe Fils, 6 Boulevard Poissonnière, Paris.
Bought from an eBay seller in Winsen, Germany.
Henri Louis Jean Lagriffe (1856-?), actor and photographer.
Born in Paris on 27 September 1856, Henri Lagriffe was the son of Clément Lagriffe (1829-1899) and the nephew of Jean-Baptiste Lagriffe (1820-1865), both Parisian photographers (it's possible the photographer Désiré Lagriffe was another uncle, but this has yet to be established). Despite this heredity, the young Henri preferred the stage to portrait photography. In June 1878 in Buzançais, while on a theatrical tour, the young actor married Cécile Amélie Baillard, a fellow actor in the same troupe. In April 1879, the troupe was in Chateauneuf-sur-Cher when their eldest daughter was born. Revealed on the birth certificate is the intriguing detail that during their theatrical tours, Henri and his father-in-law Lucien Eugène Baillard also acted as travelling photographers. In late 1884, Henri Lagriffe established his photography studio at 6 Boulevard Poissonnière in Paris, and remained there for six years. On 1 March 1888 he created the company Centralisation des beaux-arts, which reproduced artistic works. In June 1890 Henri Lagriffe sold his business to Jean-Baptiste Hugot and returned to his first love: the theatre. - www.portraitsepia.fr/photographes/lagriffe-3/

It was past 1PM and the show must start again. Unfortunately for the famed San Diego Dance Troupe ladies, they were human chandeliers and they could not sit down without removing the wired overlay. Like Victorian women, their uncomfortable petticoats have to fastend against their waist TIGHT so that they can sashay to the crowd's delight.

St. Foillan church is located in Aachen's central Cathedral Square pedestrian zone, right next to the cathedral. It was built in 1180 and renovated in the 19th century. It has a neo-Gothic spire, a large bronze cross, paintings, a late Gothic sculpture of Madonna, a wooden statue from the 16th century and other relics. Damages and restorations left their toll on the building.

St. Foillan is one of the city parishes of the city Aachen. It is located in the immediate Domnähe in the pedestrian zone and is only separated by a narrow lane from the Duomo. St. Foillan is the only church in the German-speaking area which the Holy Foillan was ordained. This is considered a sign that the missionary work of the Aachen area from the west took place.
History
After the establishment of the Aachen cathedral around the year 800, the privileged and the canons of the then empire celebrated their worship in this church, while the ordinary citizens had to resort to other churches. For this reason, a church of the same name was in 1180 at the site of the present parish church of St. Foillan built. Today this no longer exists.
After the cathedral was increased significantly in 1414 due to an extension of the aisle, pursued also the citizens of Aachen for a new building of its now outgrown Church. For this reason, a three-aisled Gothic building of St. Foillan was built and inaugurated 1482nd From him some parts have been preserved until today. It is essential, however, that both churches together moved extremely close by the extension of the Duomo and remained only separated by a narrow alley. In order not to increase the visual impression of narrowness still, the newly built church of St. Foillan was atypically built on the south side. A tower for commonly selected western side would be too close to the cathedral. One consequence of this decision is that the bell tower for the normally sighted coming from Dom visitors is hardly recognizable.
The present appearance of the church has little of that time to do with. Only remnants of the choir, parts of the facade and a few other areas have been preserved. The remaining parts of the facade and the tower date back to 1888, or are recent. For this purpose are responsible, inter alia, numerous fires that had the church extremely damaged. The greatest harm directed a bombing raid on the Tuesday after Easter 1944th Here, the church was almost completely destroyed.
Only 1956-1958 was rebuilt of the temple by the Aachen architect and Dombaumeister Leo Hugot. The preserved Gothic parts were merged into a new entity through a cleverly designed, modern structure with pillars cast folding mat.
By now, according to a comprehensive local government reform to the Catholic parish St Foillan composite Franziska von Aachen in Aachen-Mitte, where the namesake Franziska Schervier back and of the Poor Sisters of St. Francis is supported. At this parish composite also includes the municipalities of St. Adalbert, St. Andrew, St.. Cross, St. Mary, St. Peter and the youth church kafarna: order and the new municipality of time window.
Interiors
As a central focal point is located in the middle of the sanctuary, the altar from the year 1962. It was built by Klaus Iserlohe designed and consists of bluestone. The circumferential relief depicts 32 scenes from the history of salvation.
There is a large bronze cross with Above the altar enamel coating, which also dates from the year 1962nd It was designed by Egino Weinert created and displays on the front scenes of the Crucifixion, on the back of the Lamb of God.
The tabernacle as octagonal altarpiece, dates from 1962 and was designed by the same artist. Enamel work on the outside depict scenes from the life of Jesus.
For the incidence of light into the house of God provide, inter alia, three large central window in the choir room. They date from 1958 and were greeted by Wilhelm Buschulte created. Depicting scenes from the Book of Revelation of John. As motifs show the great west window in a color composition the theme: "The salvation (red) in the history". Shown are the creation, the incarnation of God and the eschatological consummation.
The ambo from 1966 was designed by Klaus Iserlohe and consists of bluestone. The reliefs show how the word of God came to the people as well as the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
Numerous paintings decorate the interior of the church.
St. Foillan has two large-scale works of sacral early August von Brandis. One is from the year 1901/02 and presents in a cheerful, Mediterranean-influenced scene the Wedding at Cana is, the other shows the burial of Christ. Symbolic is the Church the Easter candle in front of this painting to transition between burial and resurrection represent.
Two other paintings are considerably older. Abraham Campenhout, a Rubens students created the painting Madonna and Child in the year 1649. At the Black Madonna is also shown as a painting in the church is it to the copy of a painting of an original in Brno exhibited work by ca . 1700s.
Among the most remarkable sculptures in St. Foillan belonging Beautiful Madonna. It was erected in the south aisle in an altar. The Madonna dates back to 1410 and is an example of late Gothic sculpture of the "beautiful style" soft with pronounced, elegant forms. Your original polychrome was removed after Parlerausstellung in Cologne 1979th 1984 painted tapestry was Irene Rothweiler designed, inaugurated the newly crowned Madonna.
They also include a wooden figure of the scourged Jesus with a crown of thorns (Ecce homo) from the 16th century.
From 1987 dates the existing church in the Via Crucis. This has, unlike usual, 16 instead of 14 stations, not for the burial but the resurrection is the end of the Via Crucis. The stations are a reproduction cast from the tomb Kilian in Würzburg Neumünster.
