FKDL―Métro Monde

Artiste autodidacte, Franck Duval dit FKDL, pratique le collage sous toutes ces formes depuis 1997: Art scotch, tableaux et art de rue. En 2006, il fait naître une famille de vingt silhouettes aux voluptés noires sur les murs de Paris puis New-York, Berlin, Londres, Barcelone, Turin… Se démarquant par des fonds unis de couleurs vives, ces personnages à la gestuelle pleine d’entrain sont parés d’anciennes revues et font office de signature FKDL dans l’univers du Street Art.
Pour cette nouvelle série qu’il nous présente sur toiles et bois, à la galerie SINCE, Franck Duval a débusqué un trésor derrière les ciels de faïence et les placards publicitaires du métro parisien ! Des lambeaux de réclames oubliés des années 50 qui deviendront une seule et même matière première, sur laquelle s’égaye une série de silhouettes en noir & blanc, toutes parées d’acteurs et surtout d’actrices de cette même époque. Tout ceci pour nous rappeler un passé pas si lointain au fond. Celui de nos pères qui jalousaient Montand d’être auprès de Gina Lollobrigida, qui ne restaient pas insensible aux charmes de Bardot, qui se retrouvaient dans la candeur de Tati ou dans la gouaille de Gabin, qui s’attendrissaient de la rudesse d’Anthony Quinn…FKDL s’infiltre dans notre imaginaire créé par ces figures cinématographiques et éveille notre mémoire pour y laisser sa propre empreinte imagée.
Self taught artist, Frank Duval, aka FKDL, is an adept of collage in all its forms since 1997 : art scotch, paintings, murals, street art… In 2006, he creates a family of 20 black voluptuous silhouettes on the walls of Paris, before taking them to New-York, Berlin, London, Barcelona, Turin…
Once they’re adorned with bits from vintage magazines, his figures, with their characteristic colored backgrounds and their happy body language, make FKDL a unique signature in the universe of street art.
For this new, it is inside the Parisian subway that FKDL drew the material for his new serie exhibited at the Since.Upian Artspace. Underneath the earthenware tiles and the branded posters, the artist, endless strider of the streets and entrails of the French capital, stumbles upon a treasure: strips of olds ads, forgotten remnants of the 50’s. Vintage colors, shapes and fonts that instantly take us back in time, when our fathers would envy Montand for being so close to Lollobrigida or smile at Brigitte Bardot’s charms, enjoy Tati’s candor, Gabin’s cheekiness or roughness of Quinn’s unkindness…
FKDL invites our imagination to feast upon these glimpses of the past and plays with our own memory so he can leave his own imprint.

The transmitter site of KSPN/710 AM, which was known in its glory years (1930 to 1997) as KMPC. It has in recent years been the West Coast flagship station for ESPN, with all-sports programming, including Los Angeles Lakers play-by-play.
It has long been 50,000 watts by day and 10,000 watts by night, and directional at night, using all three towers, to the south-southwest, across Los Angeles.
The facility sits on a large spread of land in the center of the San Fernando Valley (specifically, Valley Glen): land that is in the middle of suburbs and surely more valuable than the station itself at this point, as listening to the AM band is tanking.
This is surely why the owner, Disney, received a construction permit to move to the four-tower facility of KRDC/1110 in Irwindale, east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley. There it will be 35,000 watts by day and 2,500 watts by night: a smaller signal (especially at night) from a lesser location.
After that happens, this land will be sold, and the towers will come down. My bet, as I write this (the same day I shot it in April 2021), is that Disney will move KSPN's programming to the much bigger signal on 1110 AM (50,000 watts by day and 20,000 watts by night), and put something else on the new smaller signal on 710 AM.
So I shot these because I wanted to make sure the facility was honored photographically before it was gone.
NoGoD has been active in the Japanese music scene (and the European/international as well) for nearly 10 years.
Formed by frontman Dancho in 2005, and have performed with the same members since 2006. They have been active internationally in Asia since 2010, and are now ready to conquer Europe in the same way: through their music.
Their core message that “if a person believes in one core element, said element can become their own personal God. The band is striving to become just that.” NoGoD wants to be your God (in the sense of a core element).
A few other things the band is famous for are guitarist Kyrie’s special 7 string guitar technique, something a lot of guitarists strive to aspire to themselves.
And vocalist Dancho’s comical interaction with the audience when on stage, adding to the fun of the performance as well as displaying their love for lives and music.
Theological and philosophical principles behind the band aside they are of course most famous for their shironuri make-up, visual kei, looks and of course their music itself!
Whilst the band is known for it’s heavy (metal) style sounds, that remain quite catchy to the listener’s ear.
To achieve their own particular style they weaved in influences from J-rock, J-pop and of course the genre they are best known for: metal.
What is certain is that this band offers musical attractions to fans of many different genres, not just the visual kei or metal ones. They’re a great band that genuinely wants to build a solid fan base on the European market with their music and excellent instrumental technique.
So if you are visiting Japan Expo on Saturday the 5th or Sunday the 6th of July, make sure to check out NoGoD on their stage!

The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. Its specific name refers to its camel-like face and the patches of color on its fur, which bear a vague resemblance to a leopard's spots. The giraffe is noted for its extremely long neck and legs, as well as its horn-like ossicones. It stands 5–6 m (16–20 ft) tall and has an average weight of 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) for males and 830 kg (1,800 lb) for females. It is classified under the family Giraffidae, along with its closest extant relative, the okapi. There are nine subspecies, which are distinguished by their coat patterns.
The giraffe's scattered range extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south, and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. Their primary food source is acacia leaves, which they can browse at heights that most other herbivores cannot reach. Giraffes are preyed on by lions, and calves are also targeted by leopards, spotted hyenas and wild dogs. Adult giraffes do not have strong social bonds, though they do gather in loose aggregations if they happen to be moving in the same general direction. Males establish social hierarchies through "necking", which are combat bouts where the neck is used as a weapon. Dominant males gain mating access to females, who bear the sole responsibility for raising the young.
The giraffe has intrigued various cultures, both ancient and modern, for its peculiar appearance, and has often been featured in paintings, books and cartoons. It is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Least Concern, but has been extirpated from many parts of its former range, and some subspecies are classified as Endangered. Nevertheless, giraffes are still found in numerous national parks and game reserves.
This is a pic I took last year of a work some friends and I made at one of ours university assingments... the idea was to preserve the image and colours of sushi but change completely his flavour ... so, we made sweet sushi of different kinds of candy available in our country.... =)

I have often thought how much better we all would be if we got "back to the basics. " Too often the American way of life has become a rushed environment- consuming consumers- is another way of putting it. I am not per se a dogmatic "greenie" or an "environmental extremist" but I do see the value of slowing down.
Time is precious- as I ponder it often. I was thinking today about the oldest living Australian service man from WW I passing away. The things he must have seen, the experiences he could share and how in his 110 years of breath... he lived the code of the "basics."
I posted this song (following) by Waylon Jennings... it talks of keeping up with the Jones and such- how keeping up takes away from loving another really. What do we love? Things or family ?
Waylon and his wife lived not too far from where I currently reside. I recall how they shopped at the local Basha Grocery store and people would often say how lovely they were... so down to earth. What a way to be remembered... down to earth.
Another well-known person, Lee Marvin, lived in Tucson, Arizona at the same time I did. On a regular basis he would show up at a video store I worked at. Just "Mr. Casual," in his old t-shirt, shorts and sandals. He would smile and go about choosing his movies, chat a bit with whomever and climb back in his old truck to drive home. My father was a business owner who had established Bosa Donuts (a donut shop) beginning in Arizona and throughout the western United States in the 80's. Well, there was gal named Sarah Gorby, who lived about 6 miles north of the donut store located at Ina and I-10. Sarah was a "back to basics" kind of gal... she took care of rescue animals. Why Sarah had mountain lions, mule deer, bear cubs, roadrunners and a black raven that loved to cry "AGUA!" She had a plethora of all kinds of God's beasts.
Sarah came to know my daddy one day as she stopped in the donut shop to ask what we did with our throwaway day old donuts. While asking my dad this question, we all suddenly heard a "snort" sound. Now go figure that Sarah would of had a baby javelina squirming underneath her old army jacket. That little snorting darlin started to wiggle himself free and he latched onto Sarah's earlobe and started sucking! We all laughed and ooed and awed as we became fast friends from that day forward. It was an honor to have a worthy cause to donate our day old donuts to such a wonderful cause.
As we grew to know Sarah and love her ways dearly, we found out that she and Lee Marvin were long time friends. You see Sarah's husband and Lee served in the war together. When Sarah's husband passed on to the other side... well Lee stepped in as he promised to watch over Sarah and make sure she was taken care of properly. And she was...
Sarah and Lee now are both gone... Waylon as I mentioned prior is gone too... but you know what? They really aren't gone completely as I carry their "basic" ways deep in my heart of living this old life. How precious these days are... stop and feel the warmth of the sun on your face, listen to the laugh of children and the song of a bird as it flies overhead, smell the sweetness of a rose blossom and a pot of brewing coffee, give a smile to a passing stranger, hug your parents and make love to your special someone with the passion of living "back to the basics."- Gal. 5:22- KL CowGirlZen Photography

I saw a few other people in various outfits, but this guy's home-made getup was the most impressive. I asked if I could take a picture of him. He was acting goofy at first, but then his friends urged him to give a good pose, and I got this.
As for the movie, it was crazy intense. I was thinking of going to see it in IMAX, but I might need a while to recover. :\

The Hotel Portmeirion opened in 1926 as the focal point of Clough Williams-Ellis' proposed idea village. Artists, writers and Albanian royalty have stayed here not to mention various politicians, tycoons and other swindlers, however everyone is special at Portmeirion and all are welcome.
The main building of the hotel was built around 1850 (extended by Clough Williams-Ellis in 1926 & 1930; listed Grade II 1971) was the original mansion of Aber Iâ.and first described by Richard Richards in 1861 as "one of the most picturesque of all the summer residences to be found on the sea-coast of Wales."
When Clough discovered it in 1925 he was faced with dereliction and an overgrown wilderness. "I obviously had to use the old house on the sea's edge for something and, if I wanted a village, it would have to have an economic basis and the obvious thing seemed to be tourism. It was at Easter 1926, after less than a year's preparation, that the original old house, little altered, opened somewhat tentatively as an unlicensed hotel."
Clough's first extension of the old house was drawn in October 1926. This tower-like wing added to the west of the old house rises close to the cliff face. The wing was originally limewashed with yellow, and its subtlety depends on the use of external window shutters painted in the green which became synonymous with the village. Clough added a new dining room in 1930. Instead of reproducing the Victorian style of the original structure, here Clough exploited a curved, highly glazed plan of clearly Modern concept. It opened at Easter 1931, as noted in an early edition of the guide book: "The big brand-new curvilinear restaurant on the sea-edge, opened a little doubtfully for Easter, was, by August, hopelessly inadequate for its dual purpose of serving both residents and day-visitors."
As Richard Haslam points out, with this addition Clough achieved two of his ideals: "a placeTea on the lawn 1929 which, because of its sheltered outlook over the sea and its airy position, calls for lightness of construction; and a space defined only by curves in its plan. It is made almost entirely of wood; the outer walls are mostly window, the simple joinery of its flat roof is shown on the drawing, and the columns are cut from sections of mast from a dismantled Porthmadog schooner."
Clough later added a new entrance and offices in a similar style around 1935. These additions to the front of the hotel continued in use until their destruction in the fire of 1981. Conceived as superimposed glazed walls on curved plans under flat roofs, they were fluent and modern spaces, which enabled the functions of a hotel to coexist with a Victorian house hemmed in by a cliff.
On the night of Friday 5 June 1981 the hotel was gutted by fire, the flames fanned by a stiff Easterly wind. Reconstruction commenced almost immediately and eventually all its main rooms were substantially restored to their former state as evidenced by Clough's description of the original interior: "As you enter the hall past a massive carved Italian renaissance fireplace, you see beyond it the wide and easy flight of a typical eighteenth century stair with an elegant balustrade...No one knows whence it came, but we do know where the library at its foot came from, and it was the Great Exhibition of 1851 - all complete with its intricately carved doors and mantelpiece - to be built straight into the house that was then, presumably, just ready to receive it. The Mirror Room, next it, reflects as you enter the view outside the wrong way round; the mantelshelf is supported by the functional haloes of a pair of carved saints and the inlaid parquet is that surviving the room's use as a curs' kennel - strangely without a mark. The big room at the end of the hall was originally the billiards room - pleasant enough with a bay window towards the sea and a wide alcove opposite... It was the dining room when the house first became an hotel and so continued until I built out a new curvilinear one beyond it." The hotel reopened on 29th April 1988 and in 1990 was awarded the Good Hotel Guide's César Award for "Brilliant restoration of a great hotel to former glory".
The Hotel enjoyed a celebrated clientele such as H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, Noël Coward and Sir Kenneth Clark.
