Peregrine Falcon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known simply as the Peregrine,[2] and historically as the "Duck Hawk" in North America,[3] is a cosmopolitan bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It is a large, crow-sized falcon, with a blue-gray back, barred white underparts, and a black head and "moustache". It can reach speeds over 320 km/h (200 mph) in a dive, making it the fastest animal in the world.[4] As is common with bird-eating raptors, the female is much bigger than the male.[5][6] Experts recognize 17–19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; there is disagreement over whether the distinctive Barbary Falcon is a subspecies or a distinct species.

The Peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the Tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread bird of prey.[7] Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon", referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations.

While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the Peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles or even insects. It reaches sexual maturity at one year, and mates for life. It nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures.[8] The Peregrine Falcon became an endangered species in many areas due to the use of pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the beginning of the 1970s onwards, the populations recovered, supported by large scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.[9]

Brian picked a real winner of a night for this month's PDX Nightowls photowalk at the recently opened Darlene Hooley Pedestrian Bridge at Gibbs Street which turned out to be a wonderful platform for photographing lightning over the city. Shortly after a firery sunset the lightning began and never stopped, it seemed like hardly a minute went by without lightning from some part of the sky. Smell the electricity. N65084,117

Pyroclastic Trails. Gravity exhibition at Centro de Cultura Digital (Mexico City) during Connecting the Dots 2019. Curator : Carmen Salas.

The work shows volcanic rocks rising from the ground that create trails of pixels. The layering of tezontle is generated by a software by modifying the size, speed, trajectory and selection of rocks from a database of photogrammetric 3D scans. Made in November 2019 in collaboration with UNAM’s Instituto de Geografía during a residency for Connecting the Dots, the work is related to research on the impact of mining activities in extinct volcanoes of Sierra de Santa Catarina located south of Mexico City.

………………………………………………………………………

I'm sharing here on Flickr a (long) series of photos, taken in early August this year, during a short vacation in Calabria, at a holiday village located near a beach I've been frequenting with my family for several years now, during our short summer vacations. The setting, however, is very different from the beaches I normally frequent near my home in Taormina, with very crowded beaches and a sea that is also very popular with yachtsmen of all kinds. In this part of Calabria, the beaches are rarely crowded (except on weekends, but not too much). In short, it's a sort of almost tropical paradise, with very little yachting. Adjacent to the holiday village is a kitesurfing club, very popular with enthusiasts of this wonderful sport, which thrives on the sea and the wind. I photographed an 84-year-old kitesurfer, whose mettle is steely, still giving athletes much younger than him a run for their money. A friendly and sweet horsewoman from the nearby stables arrived unexpectedly in the beach village, accompanied by her father, both astride two magnificent colts. This created a moment of joy and curiosity for both the parents and their little ones, who were likely seeing these magnificent and docile animals up close and personal for the first time. Unexpectedly, a very special party broke out on the beach. Seeing it made me feel like I was no longer in Calabria, but rather transported to the other side of the globe, to the Hindu festival called Holi, with its throwing of colored powders (in India, this festival marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, as well as symbolizing the victory of good over evil). I know it thanks to the evocative photographs often published on various photography websites.

I'll end by briefly mentioning the photographic technique I've often used in my photographs. I've created "blur" photographs—blurry, slightly blurry, and unfocused—at the time of shooting, simply by lengthening the exposure time and then also using some panning. Finally, I'd like to thank the sweet and beautiful models who posed for me, allowing me to further enhance this (long-winded) photographic story.

………………………………………………………………………..

So I had to go to Antwerp for business and I hate it to go places without being able to take a few shots of the local entourage. Decided to get up *really* early to catch the Antwerp dawn (sunrise) over at the banks of the Schelde. Oh well! I've seen a lot of (wet) snow but no sun in sight - plenty of cobblestones too-uh-oo-uh-oo-uh-ooh-uh-oo... pfff... Antwerp - crazy city. ;-)

About the processing

This is 3 shots (1/25 - 1/50 - 1/100) handheld :) - ran through Photomatix Pro and PS CS6 for the final touch.

ATA HISTORY

The American Thresherman Association (ATA) was organized in March of 1959.

At the annual meeting in 1962, Amos Rixman commented that the Association "organized three years ago this month for the purpose of furnishing some enjoyment to its members and to be the beginning of something very worthwhile." Already in its brief life the Association had earned such a reputation that three towns vied for the chance to become the permanent site for the show. The Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce invited the ATA with open arms and pledges of support, and the Perry County community was chosen over Mascoutah and Highland for the 1962 show site.

That complex of buildings is located in the same place where it was the old medieval Sitges hospital. Some of the elements of that old construction as certain gothic arches still being part of the new construction.

In 1912 the millionaire Charles Deering starts with the help of Miquel Utrillo i Morlius (engineer) the construction of Maricel Palace in order to assure the conservation of his art collections. Deering bought the houses in both sides of the street and arranged the buildings sea side as his residence. That building has a tower with embattlements named Torre de Sant Miquel (Saint Michael tower), and a bridge over the street communicating both sides of palace.

The main gate of Maricel de Terra (Land section of palace) has an impressive staircase leading into the Gold Room (the main room) and through that to the Blue Room. Above that rooms are the cloister with a fantastic view on the sea.

The decorative elements of façades are in part taken from other places and in part commissioned by Deering to artists and manufacturers of Sitges or Barcelona, as Pere Jou an sculptor who make the capitals of windows.

The sea side of Maricel is today a Museum housing the art collection of Charles Deering. The land side buildings are used as an events center.

Perhaps Maricel is closer of Noucentisme that of Modernisme (Art Nouveau), but the ideas inspiring it are the same sustained by Art Nouveau artists as Rusiñol, Casas, Utrillo and others being part of Sitges group.

CASTELLANO

ENGLISH

Arcos de la Frontera is a town of southern Spain, in the province of Cádiz; on the right bank of the river Guadalete, which flows past El Puerto de Santa Maria into the Bay of Cadiz. The town occupies a ridge of sandstone, washed on three sides by the river, and commanding fine views of the lofty peak of San Cristobal, on the east, and the fertile Guadalete Valley, celebrated in ancient Spanish ballads for its horses. At the highest point of the ridge is a Gothic church with a fine gateway, and a modern tower overlooking the town. The fame of its ten bells dates from the wars between Spaniards and Moors in which “Arcos of the Frontier” received its name. After its capture by Alphonso the Wise of Castile (1252-1284), the town was a Christian stronghold on the borders of Moorish territory. Another church contains several Moorish banners, taken in 1483 at the battle of Zahara, a neighboring village. The ruined citadel, the theatre, and the palace of the dukes of Arcos are the only other noteworthy buildings. Roman remains have been found in the vicinity, and the ridge of Arcos is honeycombed with rock-hewn chambers, said to be ancient cave-dwellings. See Galeria de Arcobricenses illustres (Arcos, 1892), and Riqueza y culture de Arcos de la Frontera (Arcos, 1898) ; both by M. Mancheiio y Olivares.

CASTELLANO

The action of the Helvara rifle is totally unlike other bolt action rifles. The action is locked by a locking block dropping into recesses in the receiver; when the bolt carrier is pulled back, a wedge pulls the locking block up and out of these recesses. The trigger is a two-stage design which wraps around the sear.

- www.kevin-palmer.com - The milky way is so big that sometimes even your widest lens can't capture it. This is a stitch of 3 images shot with a Pentax K-5 and Bower 14mm f2.8 lens. This night was a bit chilly for mid-May with temperatures in the 30's. But it was perfectly clear with very transparent skies. The brightest parts of the galaxy were clearly reflected in the still water of Spring Lake. I don't think conditions get any better around here for astrophotography. Next month I plan to seek out even darker skies where there is no pesky band of light pollution at the horizon. For a closer look at the bright portion of the milky way, go to the previous image.

Siento no haberme despedido, estaba perdido.

A dolmen (also known as cromlech, anta, Hünengrab, Hunebed, Goindol, quoit, and portal dolmen) is a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, usually consisting of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table). Most date from the early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BC). Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow, though in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.

Panther Beach North: Mission Panorama and Coastal Obsession Collide

Although it has been a very dry winter here along the central California coast, we did get hit by some heavy rain over the weekend. Friday afternoon, before the rain really hit hard, I posted a panorama from a point overlooking the stretch of coast known as Panther Beach and Hole In The Wall Beach, entitled "Coastal Obsession". As the worst of the rain subsided on Monday night, I went out and shot another panorama entitled "Coastal Obsession Part II: Mission Panorama".

This morning I got up at 5am, headed up the coast, hoping to scout out how my recent shooting grounds would work for sunrise. You see, Aaron Reed, a contact of mine, is road tripping to Cali, and we may hook up for a sunrise shoot. Wanting to look like I know what I'm doing, I figured I should do some research first...and why not head to where I know there are some nice spots.

Well, the newly running creek at Panther Beach had eroded the beach even more than just a couple days ago. Of course, I left my wading boots in truck, and the only way to proceed was to head up the trail, get the boots, and head back down. Once across the creek, I could finally determine that the mix of high tide and swell wasn't going to allow me through the hole in the wall. I considered shooting the hole with water rushing through, but instead, headed up to the bluff directly above it. My recent itch for panoramas got the best of me.

Not the best sunrise, but I enjoyed the setting of the waning crescent moon and then the rising sun.
