I've always been a big fan of large earthworks art and Olrick Thorson's Standing stones in Acasia California is one of the most impressive I've ever seen. The sheer size of this project is almost hard to believe. ( over 120 feet tall) The remote location near the Oregonian border in Northern Califronia makes it hard to visit, ten mile dirt road and then a hard scramble down to the shore. But once you make the hike, it's so worth it.
The dream of philanthropist William Waits, who grew up on a small dairy farm not far from this spot, the Balance Rocks is the work of famed Norwegian Sculpture Olrick Thorson. This project took almost two years of his life and cost what must be huge sums of money. (because the Waits foundation is completely private entity and wont disclose the cost, no one knows how much. Unbelieveably these are free standing rocks and are not attached at all. Apparently the sheer mass of the rock is far greater than the wind sheer forces of even the strongest winds and once the proper balance is acheived they are very hard to move at all. (I would still think twice about kayacking by on a windy day however!)
Thorson is known for his wry sense of humor and it shows here in his clever use of pre-carving the massive rocks to give them the shape of smaller river rocks one usually associates with these carrins. An entire village of japansese masons lived in the town of Acasia for a whole year preparing the rocks the shape of which were designed with hi tech computers to ensure the proper mass and and size for optimal balancing.
Tragically, Thorson's younger Brother Yanni was crushed to death in a freak accident early on in the carving process. A plaque dedicating the work to his memory sits at the end of the trail not far from where I took this picture. If you're ever in Acasia California, you gotta go check this thing out!
(In a strange coincidence note Olrick's Father Tor was a confidant of my great uncle arthur and they used to hunt mushrooms togeather.)

Official Statement on Name Change
"Sisters of Rwanda has been in operation in Rwanda for 2.5 years. Our original mission was to “ensure justice, equality and economic opportunities for Rwanda’s most vulnerable women”. Over the years we have learned better how to serve this amazing country and the people that dwell within it. We came here to listen and to learn, and as part of the natural maturation of our organization, we have grown into KEZA. Simply put, KEZA is the result of a 2.5 year pilot project called Sisters of Rwanda. “KEZA is a people-inspired luxury fashion house based in Rwanda. We buy top quality fashion goods from non-profit development organizations, generate income for the poor and help to establish Africa’s position in the luxury fashion industry.”
We still work with the very same 43 women that helped build Sisters of Rwanda. And our vision has only strengthened and become more strategic. Sisters of Rwanda has grown up, and we are proud to present KEZA to the world. Welcome to KEZA, “Where ‘they’ become ‘we’”. "

Some information about singapore
Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Singapore is highly urbanised but almost half of the country is covered by greenery. More land is being created for development through land reclamation.
Singapore had been a part of various local empires since it was first inhabited in the second century AD. Modern Singapore was founded as a trading post of the East India Company by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 with permission from the Sultanate of Johor. The British obtained full sovereignty over the island in 1824 and Singapore became one of the British Straits Settlements in 1826. Singapore was occupied by the Japanese in World War II and reverted to British rule after the war. It became internally self-governing in 1959. Singapore united with other former British territories to form Malaysia in 1963 and became a fully independent state two years later after separation from Malaysia. Since then it has had a massive increase in wealth, and is one of the Four Asian Tigers. The economy depends heavily on the industry and service sectors. Singapore is a world leader in several areas: It is the world's fourth-leading financial centre, the world's second-biggest casino gambling market, and the world's third-largest oil refining centre. The port of Singapore is one of the five busiest ports in the world, most notable for being the busiest transshipment port in the world. The country is home to more US dollar millionaire households per capita than any other country. The World Bank notes Singapore as the easiest place in the world to do business. The country has the world's third highest GDP PPP per capita of US$59,936, making Singapore one of the world's wealthiest countries.

Excerpt from www.toronto2015.org: PACHI is a young porcupine who grew up just west of Toronto in a forested area of the Niagara Escarpment. PACHI isn’t your typical porcupine; he’s outgoing and loves to explore new places and meet new friends. And while there are some prickly challenges in being accepted as a porcupine, PACHI is out to prove otherwise.
PACHI has 41 brightly coloured quills—one for each of the Pan American countries participating in the Games. His quills are five brilliant colours and represent qualities that he holds – green is youth, fuchsia is passion, blue is collaboration, orange is determination and purple is creativity. PACHI, like other porcupines, has a visual impairment and difficultly seeing people and objects that are far away.
One day, PACHI noticed lights and noise coming from the east. Always an adventure seeker, he quickly headed in that direction. His journey ended in Toronto and when he arrived, he noticed that everyone was diverse and unique like him. PACHI’s dream is for everyone to celebrate their differences and be proud of their individuality, like him.
Everyone was welcoming and this made it fun and easy for PACHI to meet new friends, explore the cool neighbourhoods and attend tons of great events. The city was so inviting that PACHI made Toronto his new home.
PACHI quickly learned that Toronto is hosting the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games during the summer of 2015. He heard that thousands of athletes, spectators and volunteers would be coming to the city. What a perfect opportunity to get involved and play host to the Americas and the Caribbean, he thought!
Team Porcupine includes Jenny Lee, Fiona Hong, Michelle Ing and Paige Kunihiro—a group of Grade 8 students from Buttonville Public School in Markham, Ontario.
The group entered the TORONTO 2015 Mascot Creation Challenge as part of a school project led by physical education teacher Mari Ellery. The four friends put their heads together and spent two months perfecting their porcupine and adding as many Pan Am colours as they could. Their hard work paid off!

The Vulturine Guineafowl (Acryllium vulturinum) is the largest and most spectacular of the guineafowl bird family. It is a resident breeder in northeast Africa, from southern Ethiopia through Kenya and just into northern Tanzania.
It breeds in dry and open habitats with scattered bushes and trees, such as savannah or grassland. It lays its usually 4-8 cream-coloured eggs in a well-hidden grass-lined scrape.
although all other guineafowl have unfeathered heads, this species looks particularly like a vulture because of the long bare neck and head.
The slim neck projects from a cape of long, glossy, blue and white hackles. The breast is cobalt blue, and the rest of the body plumage is black, finely spangled with white.
The sexes are similar, although the female is usually slightly smaller than the male and with smaller tarsal spurs. Young birds are mainly grey-brown, with a duller blue breast and short hackles.
Vulturine Guineafowl is a gregarious species, forming flocks outside the breeding season typically of about 25 birds. This species' food is seeds and small invertebrates. This guineafowl is terrestrial, and will run rather than fly when alarmed. Despite the open habitat, it tends to keep to cover, and roosts in trees. It makes loud chink-chink-chink-chink-chink calls.

I had to be quick, because it struck me how this elderly couple sat there, in front of the most beautiful imaginable sunset and each of them looked in a different direction!
Had I taken my hazardous shot in a better quality, you'd see the lake and sky much darker than they seem on this photo but then you wouldn't be ablt to discern the two heads, turned into different directions! Those two obviously see the world from very different angles and might return home with the woman saying: 'Oh darling, wasn't that just the most magic sunset ever', whereas her husband might add: 'I don't know but have you seen that crazy couple in shorts and roller skates in the middle of February?'
Have all a very Happy Sunday!

Title
Denver, Colorado. Twenty-four hours a day the sparks from acetylene torches of steel workers in eight Denver fabricating plants are flying thick and fast that the U.S. Navy may carry the battle to the enemy in all parts of the world. Here in secluded Denver, the world's largest city not on a navigable waterway, this war production worker, who has never seen a battleship or an ocean, fashions the steel hull parts which are being assembled at Mare Island Navy Yard--1,200 miles from where he and his fellow wokers are on the job to help "keep 'em sailling."

I photographed these Roseate Spoonbills over Mrazek Pond in Everglades National Park. The spoonbills were apparently roosting behind some trees which were out of sight and inaccessible to us, but we could hear them. Every once in a while one or two would appear from behind the trees and corkscrew over the pond climbing higher and higher. After circling over the pond for the third time, they would be extremely high and off they would go toward their destination. While they were climbing, pictures could be had during their first turn around the pond, after that they would, for all practical purposes, be out of reach. Then we would have to wait until the next spoonbill(s) would repeat the procedure or some would return. These appeared to be returning to their roost from wherever it was that they had been.

Situated in the Melbourne Docklands lies the South side of the Victoria Harbour. This particular photo was taken from my balcony and was my 5th attempt to capture the entire viewable angle of this approx. 155 degree view during twilight. Obviously you haven't seen the first 4 failed attempts! *hehe*
You see the edges of two other residential buildings bordering left and right of the image. In the centre you have new illuminated ANZ Headquarters, below it the Yarra's Edge Marina. The funky looking illuminated Webb-Bridge (a artistic and photogenic highlight) is found next to the boat quays to the right of the frame. Behind it you can see the West end of the Melbourne Central Business District . Surrounding all the describe above is the U-shaped Promenade walk which leads towards the Bolte Bridge, which you can find to the left of this photograph.
History:
Two interesting facts that I wasn't aware of till now. I moved here in mid-2007 and there is 1000's of apartments among the residential towers in the docklands. But in 2006 there was not even 4,000 counted people during census. Docklands acquired his name during the 1880's when it was used for docks, industry and railway infrastructure. Due to the containerisation of shipping traffic the need for the docks disappeared and the area fell into disrepair in the 1980s. This part of Melbourne became quite the wasteland before it was re-developed in prime waterfront properties both for commercial and residential purposes.
Technique:
This is a 17-Shot Panorama/ Vertorama (actually i'm not sure what it is now? Maybe a Multirama?). The picture time varied between 13-15 seconds and I had to play with two focal lengths 17 and 20mm due to the changing sky and speed of change of colors after sunset. The entire sequence of pictures took over 12minutes! Aperture was set at 11 and my Canon 7D body was mounted to a Manfrotto tripod.
Print:
In total this picture has 92.1 Megapixel (excl. frame) and is over 72 Megabytes in compressed JPEG filesize. Maximum printsize is 4.2m x 3.5m at 72DPI.

"Madre,
Ha la capacità di ascoltare il silenzio.
Indovinare sentimenti.

This corner building is The Fellowship Of Lights, a homeless shelter for male children on Calvert Street in downtown Baltimore City. As a child I stayed here on a number of occasions to escape the cold of winter.
For those not familiar with the story, which I've spoken about in previous postings, I left home at the age of 13. I tried to leave home a couple times starting in about 1971 at the age of 12, but they hunted, captured and brought me back both of those times. After the last time, they determined I clearly didn't want to be there and let me go.
No, I wasn't abused and my parents weren't alcoholics or drug addicts and nobody should ever feel sorry for me because of how I chose/choose to live my life. If I had it to do all over again, I'd do it the same exact way, but certainly wouldn't recommend the same path to others.
I traveled to Baltimore, the city of my birth, this past holiday season to revisit my past as I move into the third and last phase of my life (This assumes an average lifespan of ~75 years for a white American male. I fit into all three of those categories and will turn 50 this year.) I hadn't been back in many, many years. The memories I had prior to that visit were mostly all negative.
One of the objectives of this trip was to do a little photojournalistic exercise of where I "grew-up", the places I lived, the elementary and middle schools I attended and other memorable elements of my odd young life, be they good or bad.
My original intention was to post the photos and stories in chronological order, but decided instead to just be me and do it in the order of pure and unplanned randomness.
No memories remain of the inside of this building, but I do remember the area around here was a popular hangout for transvestites (There may have been transexuals, too, but I wasn't aware of that word back then.)
I remember having a fear of those types of people when I was young and was taught how to spot 'em by looking at their laryngeal prominence, or Adam's Apple -- My experience allowed me to deduce that Cleavage + Adam's Apple almost always = Transvestite.
By the way, here in my adult life I have no fear of, or prejudice towards, transvestites and only possess what I believe is a normal sense of "What's the deal?" wonderment about Transvestism behavior.
Many of the transvestites who were attracted to me would commonly yell and motion for me to come talk to them. I was a little towheaded kid at the time. I didn't sprout up and out until later in life. I assumed most, if not all of them, were gay. I never let any of them to get close enough to touch me.
I remember very well my last day at The Fellowship Of Lights. A larger than usual crowd of transvestites were gathering directly across the street. Some other kid who was staying at the halfway house told me they were waiting for me to come outside.
I don't know if there was any truth in what he said, but I became terrified.
I remember asking an adult supervisory person at the halfway house if I could use the telephone. She or I looked up the number of the White Coffee Pot restaurant located in the Gardenville area of Baltimore, which was in the far Northeast corner of the city and near where my parents lived.
I called the White Coffee Pot because I was familiar with the restaurant and the people who hung out at the counter there. My Dad was a regular and used to bring me there all the time before I left home. In fact, I eventually wound-up working there as a dishwasher when I was in my 15th or 16th year. After my Mom and Dad divorced, when I was about 19, he went on to marry the manager of this restaurant. He remained married to her up until his death three or four years ago.
A restaurant regular and good friend of my Dad was a cab driver whose name I no longer recall. When I called the restaurant I asked for him. Luckily, he was there.
I don't remember the exact conversation, but recall asking him to come down into the city to pick me up here at the Fellowship Of Lights because I was in trouble, and scared.
I remember I directed him to pull up in front of the building and to have the back door of the cab unlocked so I could run out, jump in, and have him drive off before the green light turned red.
What he did instead was pull up in front and open the front passenger side door. I then waited and watched for him from a window.
When he arrived I checked the color of the traffic light to make sure it was green, ran out of the building and dove into the front seat of his cab. I slammed the door shut as he began the rapid process of departure.
Until the date this photo was taken, about two or three weeks ago, that was the last time I ever saw this building and this area of Baltimore City.
I tried to gain entry to the building when I took this photo. Although the name plaque is still on the outside of the building, the telephone number has been disconnected and nobody answered when I rang the doorbell multiple times.
I would've loved to have resurrected some memories of the inside of this place.
Whatever it looked like inside, it kept me warm and I'm thankful it existed when I needed it most.
