Rhododendron anthers are odd- they don't split open but spill pollen out of the top. The pollen seems slighly sticky and comes out in strings which the hoverflies just seem to suck up. Animated from 4 shots

Hoverfly Scaeva pyrastri. Spotted this on a minature pine tree- think it had recently emerged. This hoverfly has interesting angular compound eyes

The 70-200 impresses me with how it performs with extension tubes. It looks like it will be my go-to lens for things that let me get really close....at least until if and when I get a macro lens. To put things in perspective, this fits in a dragonfly's mouth. (saw one eating one of these last week)
