Trying out my Lego book cover illustrations with a horror vibe: the well-worn cliche of the spooky house with a ghost in the sky troupe. Lots of fun!
Process of the book cover image. At top are the two reference pics I took (I wondered if some 1x4 gear racks might suggest grassy fields in microscale).
Pic 1 is cutting the background out and playing with colour balances.
2 is trialling adding the skull in the sky with the clone stamp tool in Photoshop. It's not working yet as the skull has tons of contrast and completely dominates the house: the house needs to sit in front of the skull as it's in the sky and is nebulous. The house should be the focal point.
Number 3 is trying to bring the house out more while pushing the skull back. It's a bit better but I really wasn't happy with how big and dominant the skull is.
4 is ditching those previous skulls and gently adding bits of the skull into the sky. Here's where the long-overdue revelation hits me "Oh subtlety! I get it!" It's enough to show the glowing eyes and teeth and keep the contrast lower than that on the house. Much better. Lastly just hide edges with deep shadows. With sci-fi book cover you hide unwanted areas with fog and gas but with horror, use darkness ;-D
