Here is some information on the sculptor, Imre Varga .

Also known as the Holocaust Memorial, is a memorial in Berlin to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold.

It consists of a 19,000-square-metre site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs of different heights, arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field.

Berlin Holocaust Memorial

Seen at Holocaust Memorial, Berlin.

Vom 09. auf den 10. November im Jahre 1938 begann mit der Reichskristallnacht (auch Pogromnacht genannt) eines der bittersten Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte. Mehrere 100 Juden wurden in dieser Nacht ermordet und mehrere 1000 am folgenden Tag in Konzentrationslager verschleppt.

Dieses Denkmal soll daran erinnern dass es niemals eine gute Sache ist wenn es ins Extreme umschlägt.

 

From the 9th to the 10th of November in 1938, one of the bitterest chapters in German history began with the Kristallnacht (also called Pogromnacht). Several hundred Jews were murdered that night and several thousand were taken to concentration camps the following day.

This memorial is intended to remind you that it is never a good thing when it turns into extremes.

holocaust memorial

 

I never posted two versions of a similar photo before, but in this case, they are expressing two different feelings (from many I've had during the walk through the memorial). The light and mood were changing so dramatically every second.

  

Not far from Berlin's Brandeburg Gate is this very recent memorial to the victims of the holocaust, the Denkmal fur die Ermodeten Juden. This labyrinth of 2700 cement blocks covering a vast undulating area is very inspiring and extremely photogenic.

Today in 1945, Auschwitz was liberated. The concentration camp, the largest operated by Nazi Germany, saw the killings of more than 1.1 million people.
