“Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy
When you look through the years
and see what you could have been
Oh, what you might have been,
If you'd had more time
So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
...Take the Long Way Home “

A new session of water drop shots, this time closer to the subject and from a more flat angle in an attempt to make the effect itself the important part. I had food colours in the water in the MIOPS container. Also, In the bowl below I had a spot of milk to make the water more opaque - and some food colours as well. The backgrounds were simply different coloured plastic binders which are semi-clear with a frosted quality to it, which I like. Because of the issues below I never did try to add the Xanthan gum thickened water I prepared - I just didn't have the strength to add another variable to the shoot ;)
I used a recently purchased Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens for the session. To be quite honest, this was a frustrating shoot. I couldn't get the DOF perfect although I tried varying the F-stop and moving the camera around. I need some help to maximise the DOF so please let me know if you have suggestions to the range to the drop from the lens - or any other suggestions for that matter. Focus also caused me issues for some reason. I placed a pen in the water in some Tac-All so it was stable and fired the MIOPS to find the exact spot to set focus on. How do you achieve perfect focus? I let the the drop hit the center of the pen but should it perhaps be slightly in front or the back?
I used 2 Speedlights off-camera on 1/32 power, one illuminating the back and another, with a softbox mounted, illuminating the drop. 1/250 shutter speed and varying f-stops.
Please let me know if you have experience using 3+ drops with the MIOPS; I just can't seem to get a third drop to actually have an effect. Help! :)

So, I decided to up the game and purchased a MIOPS Splash kit to control the entire shooting process from an app on my phone and be able to do more than one drop in each shot.
Two flashes, one lighting the bowl with the water with a softbox mounted. The second lighting the background, which started out as blue background but the water drops slowly changed it into a cool looking abstract.
Again, I have just used plain cold water for the shots with no additives or colours. Xanthan gum and food colurs coming up in a future session.
Man, I love that MIOPS Splash thing. Awesome gadget. It takes some tinkering to get the settings right and I am positive that I will more or less have to do it all over again next time because of small changes in water temperature, ambient temperature or whatever.

I should have switched to f/16 earlier in the session to get more of the surface in focus. Still learning!

Var i Askov og lave nogle billed optagelser, på vejen hjem efter et 90 gr. sving står så denne majestæt af et træ, alle linjer passer og det står bare så flot op mod den blå himmel, så det måtte blive dagens billede.
Was in Askov and doing some photo shoots, on the way home after a 90 gr turn, this majesty of a tree stands, all lines fit and it just stands up so beautiful against the blue sky, so it had to be today's picture.
This is my first attempt at doing water drop photography. It...was harder than I anticipated. Take 2 will be a while but hopefully better. I need guidance for it so please, please help if you would like to :)
I started out with ISO 100, 1/200 and f/11 and flash set to 1/32 power. Nothing in the frame. Many attempts later I managed to get what you see in the shots.
I ended up on ISO 400 and it shows in the image to be honest. I had to dial the flash up to 1/4. I don't get how the guides I watched on YouTube had 1/32 and 1/64 in them. Before next time I will try to figure this out. By the way, I decided to use a custom white balance of 3500 in order to get the blue colour I was going for.
Perhaps I need a second flash? Or maybe even something more powerful like the Flashpoint XPLOR 400PRO in a big softbox?
I have just used plain cold water for the shots with no additives or colours. On the next go (after I recharge after this...) I plan on adding xanthan gum for higher viscosity and food colours for creating interesting effects.

Setup
* Water
Long, black garden tray for the water. Long because it allowed me shoot from a lower angle and not catch the back of it.
Boom stand for holding a bag with water with a clamp. To create the drops, I made a tiny hole with a needle at the bottom of the bag. Worked perfectly with about 5 seconds between each drop, which was of a good size.
Screw placed in tac-all to put in the water to help center it directly under where the drops would hit the water so focus would be as good as possible. I focused on the spot where the screw met with the water.
Jug to catch drops between shots to allow the water to be perfectly still.

The painting to the left is called "Anna Ancher vender hjem fra marken" ("Anna Ancher returning from the field") and was made in 1902 by Michael Ancher.
The painting to the right is called "Sommeraften ved Skagen" ("Summer Evening at Skagen") and was made in 1892 by P.S. Krøyer.
The first part of the museum was built in 1926-28 to exhibit an extensive collection of works by members of the colony of Skagen Painters. The plans were drawn by architect Ulrik Plesner.

Hunder går stille i mørket
Månen er på vei hjem
Libelle er alene, igjen
Du som var så varm
er frosset i isen
I evig vinter
Og jeg savner deg
