Der Hintersee zu Füßen der Reiteralpe und des Hochkalters bildete sich vor rund 3500 bis 4000 Jahren, als ein Felssturz aus dem Blaueistal vom Hochkaltermassiv, der eine Fläche von 75 Hektar bedeckt, den am Hirschbichl entspringenden Klausbach staute und gleichzeitig den Zauberwald schuf. Um eine weitere Verlandung durch das mitgeführte Geschiebe zu verhindern, wurde etwa 1900 der Klausbach um den Hintersee bis zu dessen Überlauf, dem Sillersbach, herumgeführt, um schließlich in die Ramsauer Ache zu münden. Dennoch hat der See heute nur noch ein Drittel seiner ursprünglichen Fläche.

Lake Hintersee in Germany was completely frozen and covered in snow, when I took this picture. The sun had just set behind the mountains, illuminating the sky with an intense orange, before darkness slowly set in. This normally very busy area was dead quiet, and I took a moment to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The sun had already disappeared behind the mountains, her last rays illuminating the clouds, whilst the snow-covered lake Hintersee lay untouched, as the evening starts to fall. I enjoyed this tranquil atmosphere on my own, as this location is normally rather busy.
Ramsau is a German municipality in the Bavarian Alps. It is located in the district of Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, close to the border with Austria, 35 km south of Salzburg and 150 km south-east of Munich. It is situated north of the Berchtesgaden National Park.
Ramsau is famous for its high mountains, including the third highest mountain in Germany, the fabled Mount Watzmann (2713 m), and for the Lake Hintersee.
Ramsau is one of the most picturesque villages in Germany. The church of Ramsau is often on postcards, typically captured from the "Malereck" (literally painter's corner) or "Malerwinkel" (painter's eye, or painter's view).
Hintersee, near Ramsau, is a perfect place. Idyllically situated and embedded in a picturesque landscape between mythical mountains.
One day in November, the first snow of the season had just fallen, and the sun presented me with a dramatic sunset. The intense orange glow behind the mountains, the clouds and the sudden onset of fog, almost gives the appearance of fire and smoke whilst the lake Hintersee lies completely still, offering a perfect mirror image.
It is a beautiful location to visit and I like how it changes through the seasons.
