A lone student on a corridor in a middle-school, South Central, Los Angeles during the making of a documentary I directed called 'Reaching'. It had a nice eerie mood to it. One of the most edgy locations I've ever shot in...During the shoot there was a 'lock-down' - which meant locking all the students into the school because there was a shooting in the neighborhood a few blocks away. Not an uncommon occurrence. God love the poor pre-teens who had to walk in there every day. And the staff...That being said - the Headmaster we interviewed was one of the most inspiring people I've ever met.

This is Cordell High School in Cordell, Oklahoma.
I went to this high school from 1964 to 1967 (sophomore thru graduation in May 1967).
When I went to the high school, it only had about 180 students in the three grades. My graduating class had 55 students.
After a whole day coaching 45 highschool kids on how to use a can and watching them paint christmas huts for a soon to be open christmas village at the Radisson hotel, I met up with 4 other writers to paint these huge (8mx1.7m) canvases that are to be placed inside the Hotel's Lobby for the next 2 month.
Real happy about this project. My concept was to get together 4 good writers, each from a different part of china, to paint these huge banners in each one's own unique and individual style. Thus creating a mural focused on the writers yet united by color and motifs going around. I chosed : Andc - Beijing, Ray - Wuhan, Joints - Nanjing and Read from Shanghai.
The initial idea had nothing to do with the final outcome, and all for the better. It took us 7hours to set up the canvases behind the hotel, a real nightmare, I still don't really understand how it could've taken that long, then we relayed one after the other on the 2 machines we had all through the saturday night, the next day and until 1am this monday morning. Real happy about the end result though, looks real fresh.
This picture was taken right after I sketched my letters on the canvas. A total impro. Initialy I was going to do my simple letters but as I sketched directly with the roller, when I looked back I realized that it looked kindof like a chinese callygraphic brush stroke, emphasized by the fact that we where painting from top to bottom. Decided against doing the same kindof style that I had been doing and instead decided on trying something new: keeping this brush stroke feel.
