Maria Renata was the 69-year-old sub-prioress of a convent near Würzburg, Germany. After living there for 50 years, she was accused of bewitching some hysterical nuns, tortured until she confessed to many fantastical heresies, found guilty of all charges, defrocked, and turned over for trial in a secular court. The court confirmed her guilt, and on June 21, 1749, she was beheaded and burned as a witch. Hers was one of the last official witch trials.
