I found my first salamander of the season yesterday with this Spotted found under a log. I placed him in some moss for a more appealing setting. Also he was put back under his log after the photo session. I went back again this afternoon and he was still under the same log. I just let him be this time though.

Here is a photo of a Giant Parrot Snake - (Leptophis ahaetulla) doing a threat display with its mouth open in some habitat next to the Pacific ocean on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica at Jungla Del Jaguar.
I am pretty happy with how this photo turned out. One of my favorite types of reptile photos is to show them in their habitat. Showing this one in some similarly colored vegetation a overlooking the ocean hopefully gives the viewer an insight into this species surroundings . These are harmless snakes.
It is one of my favorite animal photos from the trip and I hope you enjoy it also.

Note what looks like remnants of a recent meal smeared on her mouth and face, and a mosquito is perched on her neck. The mosquitoes were thick tonight. I hate to spray myself with bug spray because I don't want any to get on my camera (or on the wildlife I may touch), but it may no longer be optional.

I found two box turtles along the bike path this evening. Neither were willing participate in my wild photo adventure.

Marsh Owl (Asio capensis ssp.tingitanus) in flight Morocco_North Africa_w_0363
The Morocco Marsh Owls are an isolated and dwindling population. So much so that they are now a critically endangered species in Morocco.
This fragmented population is geographically separated from other breeding Marsh Owls by the huge arid area to the south called the Sahel. The Moroccan Marsh Owls are in fact a sub-species Asio capensis ssp. tingitanus. The only other other sub-species is Asio Capensis hova, in Madagascar.
The main cause of their decline in Morocco is habitat loss due to draining of large marsh areas with the expansion of agriculture.
Finely, a willing subject. It's been a slow wildlife photography month around here.

I went herping with a friend and a famous scientist from Germany. Found three of this species plus other snakes. Had a great time until it started raining heavily.
Specific epithet:
Named after the Latin adjective fucatus, that could be translated by “with make-up”. It was used in classical Latin language to describe the red and white hues harboured on their cheeks by actors of the ancient Latin theater, and was chosen here in allusion to the bicolor white and red postocular streak present in some males of this species.
I am going to be posting some really old photos of snakes for a while to get them onto flickr. I wanted to upload the full size versions here to have in my albums. Some of these I uploaded a long time ago in very small sizes and those old images in some cases taken 15 years ago are really showing their age on modern 4k screens. This one was taken back in 2010 with the Fuji HS10 which was an upgrade from the Fuji S7000 I had been shooting. In looking back through old photos I think that S7000 actually took better sharper shots.
This gator and I were stalking the same egret - but for different reasons.
