Prom Apollon Hellas (Απόλλων Ελλάς) w porcie, Pireus, 1 marca 2013 r.
**
Apollon Hellas (Απόλλων Ελλάς) ferry in the port, Piraeus, March 1, 2013
Captured almost a week past opposition in 2014 the planet Mars presented this image. Quite a lot of detail is evident on the 15.1" disk. The iconic V-Shaped feature Syrtis Major is visible towards the right limb. White cloud-filled Hellas depression is very evident bottom right and it is easy to see how it can be mistaken for the South Polar Cap!
The eye is drawn to this bright area as the opposing pole of the visible North Polar Cap giving the false impression that Mars is showing a gibbous phase. It was in fact 99% illuminated at this time!
Mars was rather better placed then than it is now from these latitudes - those living south of the equator being favoured for imaging for the next number of years...Hopefully I will get something!!
Imaged with a Celestron 8" SCT and ZWO 120MM with QHY LRGB filters.

ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter image of a region close to the giant Hellas basin in the southern hemisphere of Mars. The 2300 km diameter basin hosted a giant lake in the past, fed by a number of valleys. The crater in this image, located towards the northeast of Hellas, shows the presence of several gullies that point to the region’s wetter past.
The image was taken by the orbiter’s Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System, CaSSIS on 29 May 2018 and captures an approximately 40.2 x 8.7 km segment centred on 33.5ºS/82.8ºE. North is to the right and slightly up in this orientation.

Hellas Chaos, in the southern central part of the giant Hellas basin, stretches roughly 200 km north–south and for about 500 km in an east–west direction. It shows a variety of landforms, from large impact craters containing wind-blown dunes or flat-topped mesas, to ridges and troughs with rough knobs of material protruding from the surface. The region is also dusted with carbon dioxide frost. In the right-hand portion of the image, the curved outlines of large sublimation pits are interspersed with polygonal-patterned terrain. These features are typical of ‘periglacial’ terrain, and develop as a result of contraction and relaxation during freeze–thaw cycles as the seasons change.
The image was acquired by the High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express on 23 January 2014 during orbit 12 785. The image is centred on 46ºS / 69ºE. The ground resolution is about 18 m per pixel. North is to the right and west is at the top.
