Today, after a number of legal hearings for some of the twelve people who were arrested from Occupy Oakland's Oscar Grant Plaza because a symbolic tipi existed on the plaza, I returned to the plaza to see a wonderful sight. Like a Jack Pine which must be destroyed in a fire in order to spread its seeds, the destruction of the adult tipi had spawned sixty juvenile offspring, scattered about the lawn in front of City Hall (now dubbed "Quan Lake" in honor of the mayor who drowned it to keep the tents away).
I attempted to photograph each of them, but my battery died most of the way through and I had to duck into a nearby coffee shop to recharge it. By the time I left, I lamented the darkness, fearing I wouldn't be able to finish the full set. Much to my surprise, someone had lit a candle under each one, illuminating the darkness and bringing hope to the steadfast occupiers who remain in the plaza, just as Occupy itself has lit a fire inside many of us.

I dislike permanently installed fans, they are sometimes in the way and a lot of times aren't where you need them. I bought a spring clamp and drilled a hole to take the original mount.
Hella Jongerius
Hella Jongerius has been using her fascination for materials to design products since 1993. Both ancient craft techniques and the latest high-tech glass fiber are used and abused by Jongerius until they yield their ultimate potential and boundaries. Her work comments on the field of design and her products share a common mentality. Jongerius' work is typified by materials, history and archetypes, and by transformations from the old to the new. At first her designs look familiar and simple but behind that simplicity lurks plenty of intelligence. Her work has been exhibited and purchased by museums and galleries internationally. She teaches at the design Academy Eindhoven since 1998. Her carpet 'Repeat' was awarded with the Rotterdam design Prize 2003.
