Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. It is estimated to be around 6000 years old.
The site consists of a ring of standing stones, each weighing around 25 tons, set within earthworks in the middle of a vast, open landscape.
Stonehenge is believed to have been constructed between 3000 BC and 2000 BC, during the late Neolithic period and the early Bronze Age. The purpose of the monument remains a mystery, although it is believed to have been a place of religious or ceremonial significance.
The stones themselves are of two types: the larger sarsen stones, which form the outer circle and inner horseshoe, and the smaller bluestones, which were quarried in Wales and transported over 150 miles to the site. How prehistoric people were able to transport and erect such large stones remains a subject of debate and speculation.
Stonehenge is one of the most famous and iconic landmarks in England, attracting over 1.5 million visitors each year. The site is open to the public, and visitors can explore the monument and surrounding landscape, as well as learn about its history and significance at the visitor center.
Stonehenge is also surrounded by a number of other historic and natural attractions, including the ancient burial mounds of the Avebury World Heritage Site, the medieval cathedral city of Salisbury, and the rolling hills and woodlands of the Wiltshire countryside. Overall, Stonehenge is a fascinating and awe-inspiring destination that offers a glimpse into the mysteries of England's ancient past.
