The resident female Hedgehog was out foraging in the garden just after dawn today, but could not be tempted with a bowl of water or dried food pellets. She was found grossly underweight earlier this year and taken to a local animal shelter where she was brought up to a proper weight before being released back into the garden.

Fascinating facts about Hedgehogs: a group of hedgehogs is called an 'array’; a hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 quills; there are 17 different species of hedgehog; and hedgehogs have poor eyesight, so rely predominantly on their smell and hearing to navigate.

Another shot of the hedgehog in my garden - I’m pleased to say he’s taken up residence in one of our hog houses and has reverted to nocturnal behaviour

THANK YOU for your support and nice comments!

I met this sweet hedgehog yesterdayafternoon. He should be in a wintersleep now but he was very actif ...

global warming ?

The resident garden Hedgehog looking for worms along the edge of the flower border on 16th June 2023.

It's always a bit concerning to see a hedgehog during daylight hours but this little fella looks to be in good health and has spent a few minutes wandering & feeding in my garden for the past two afternoons.

Although hedgehogs shouldn't really be wandering around in the daytime I do wonder if this one came out of hibernation during the warm spell and the sudden drop to freezing conditions has altered his usual nocturnal behaviour.

Hopefully he'll be fine - we've left him some water and a little hedgehog food as a helping hand and I'm pleased to say he has also taken up residence in one of the hedgehog houses in the garden.

A lovely surprise visitor to the garden last night...

Glancing out the window from the kitchen I noticed this little guy wandering around the garden. Naturally I grabbed the camera! It was great watching as it plodded around, looking in the crevices of the wall. I'm in the process of building a pond for the garden, so hopefully I can entice more encounters like this.

2020 one photo each day

Poor Hedgehogs are having a tough time in this hot, dry spell. Their diet consists of beetles, worms, caterpillars, slugs and almost anything they can catch, but worms are particularly hard to come by as the soil is so hard. This hungry Hedgehog was desperately searching for bird seed.

The Hedgehog is the only spiny British mammal, and can live up to 10 years - although this is exceptional. More than half die within their first year, and average life expectancy is 2-3 years in the wild.

Thanks for your visit… Any comment you make on my photograph is greatly appreciated and encouraging! But please do not use this image without permission.

Continuing with the camera traps in the garden, here's a couple from a successful few nights trying some reflections of the nightly hedgehog visitor...

One of our resident garden hedgehogs out in the daylight!

Met this friendly fella during a walk in Charlottenburg castle garden during a January afternoon.

Hedgehogs are mainly nocturnal, generally sleeping during daytime. I do not know why this one decided to go for a day walk ...

Hedgehog (my nighttime garden visitor)

A hedgehog foraging in daylight especially in a busy area is not a good thing. Generally severe illness or starvation or dehydration are the only causes of such behaviour. I was able to get dozens of shots of this little fellow. I hope he survives.

Two of tonight's four visitors.

I was chuffed to see this hedgehog in the garden....the 1st one i have seen in years ..

Careful feeding and introducing props and a lot of luck to produce this image.

A couple from the garden recently. These two images are actually of two different hedgehogs. They had a scuffle (they don't tolerate each other!) and went their separate ways.

Close up , geen uitsnede dus zo uit de camera en geen bewerking.

Un petit modèle qui ne manque pas de piquant.

Dédicace pouit-pouit :-)

Two shots of the Hedgehog that is in the little video on my lawn this morning. Looked tired & hungry so I gave it some slugs & worms from my compost bin to feed on

Hedgehog cactus. My side yard. Dedicated macro lens. No crop.

I saw a hedgehog in my garden on the same afternoon that I spotted the Pale tussock caterpillar of the previous photo! And now it seems that hedgehogs are threatened with extinction, not only because of cars, but robotic lawnmowers too. They don't recognise hedgehogs as something that shouldn't be mowed.

So, I'm happy that we don't have a robot mower, and that we do have various hedges, an ideal habitat for hedgehogs!

This little chap was photographed at Low Newton-by-the-sea in Northumberland, England. Sadly it has been a long, long time since I last saw a live hedgehog, so it really was great to see this one.

Hedgehog / Jeż / Erinaceus europaeus

Such adorable creatures, I photographed this one in a forest near by. But we have also one in our frontyard, he comes by, eats something and sleeps in his hedgehog house when he wants.

Last night I was a bit late with feeding Mika at 7.45pm and cleaning his loo. So I put his two food bowls down and fetched two sheets of toilet paper. The rat flap was already wiggling and Mika carefully pushed his cute little nose out, sniffed a little and then a little eye followed, scrutinising me. He probably categorised me as harmless and not dangerous (well, I am 😉) and came all the way out and traipsed through the dry food to the mealworms. Hedgehogs don't believe in detours 😊

I opened the rat flap and cleaned his loo - he decided it was in the porch. Oh well.

He wanted to go back in and before I could pull my hand away with the filled paper, he had already pushed it away. I think I'm accepted as an honourary hedgehog 😊

Quickly got the camera with flash and out he came again. Mika is just so cute 😊

But he keeps me on my toes - tonight he produced almost 200 clips on the two hedgehog cams 📹

Here is a video of Mika's first night with me:
