The resident female Hedgehog was out foraging in the garden just after dawn today, but could not be tempted with a bowl of water or dried food pellets. She was found grossly underweight earlier this year and taken to a local animal shelter where she was brought up to a proper weight before being released back into the garden.
Fascinating facts about Hedgehogs: a group of hedgehogs is called an 'array’; a hedgehog has between 5,000 and 7,000 quills; there are 17 different species of hedgehog; and hedgehogs have poor eyesight, so rely predominantly on their smell and hearing to navigate.

Cold and hungry and foraging for food in the snow… This first-year female Hedgehog was found eating bird seed under a feeder in the garden at 2.30pm today. The outside temperature hasn’t risen above freezing for two days so the snow has not melted. In winter this Hedgehog, weighing just 366 grams, should be hibernating somewhere sheltered.
But after scooping her up in gloved hands and placing her in a cardboard box filled with screwed up newspaper, within 30 minutes she was transferred to the caring hands of a volunteer at the Vale Wildlife Hospital at nearby Beckford. I’ll check on the youngster in a few days…
This young one was wandering in the warm sunlight, he was not very shy and paid only attention when my dogs sniffed around his body.
Early in the morning Cleo and her alter ego, the hedgehog, enjoyed some time together in the garden. The hedgehog may smile more than Cleo but they both don't move much and Cleo can be quite spiky occasionally too. Of course both of them also make pretty garden ornaments.
It's always a bit concerning to see a hedgehog during daylight hours but this little fella looks to be in good health and has spent a few minutes wandering & feeding in my garden for the past two afternoons.
Although hedgehogs shouldn't really be wandering around in the daytime I do wonder if this one came out of hibernation during the warm spell and the sudden drop to freezing conditions has altered his usual nocturnal behaviour.
Hopefully he'll be fine - we've left him some water and a little hedgehog food as a helping hand and I'm pleased to say he has also taken up residence in one of the hedgehog houses in the garden.
Wild hedgehog that visits the garden most nights after dark. Came a bit earlier yesterday so I grabbed a shot.
I was a week or so later than usual for my Spring visit to the Arizona Cactus Garden on the Stanford campus. The blooms were mostly pretty far along, but this hedgehog still had a few just starting.

Poor Hedgehogs are having a tough time in this hot, dry spell. Their diet consists of beetles, worms, caterpillars, slugs and almost anything they can catch, but worms are particularly hard to come by as the soil is so hard. This hungry Hedgehog was desperately searching for bird seed.
The Hedgehog is the only spiny British mammal, and can live up to 10 years - although this is exceptional. More than half die within their first year, and average life expectancy is 2-3 years in the wild.

Hedgehogs are mainly nocturnal, generally sleeping during daytime. I do not know why this one decided to go for a day walk ...

A hedgehog foraging in daylight especially in a busy area is not a good thing. Generally severe illness or starvation or dehydration are the only causes of such behaviour. I was able to get dozens of shots of this little fellow. I hope he survives.

A couple from the garden recently. These two images are actually of two different hedgehogs. They had a scuffle (they don't tolerate each other!) and went their separate ways.
