This is a re-do of a prior photograph from years ago in Washington, D.C. of the roof over the courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. It was done in Picasa, the now discontinued software made available for years by Google. Hope you enjoy the pattern and colors.

I took a heatmap of the sky.

The young woman here is beautiful, and I love the reflection of the keyboard in her sunglasses ... but I gotta tell ya: the combination of grass and green-glow on the back of her laptop is out of this world. I have to admit that I used some color saturation to pump up the colors a little ... but not much. This photograph made itself: I just happened to be in the right place, at the right time, to point my camera in the right direction and push the shutter-button...

Super Technology! Over 1 billion activities (running, cycling, swiming and skiing) have been uploaded to Strava. They have produced a map of the world highlighting these activities. Amazing stuff.

What I'm showing you here is the little Kenwood Park area. The track I ride on viewed from a different perspective.

Clicking on the following link will show you the Atlanta area. You can easily zoom around to any area you choose.

A really simple shot to do. I was messing arround with a bright anglepoise halogen lamp. if you shine it into a corner of the room its round light become heartshaped. the original is below. shoot underexposed so it doesn't blind you. The pp is a single button push in picnik. use the heat map action and play with the hues to get the color combo you want.

Invert and use as a candle shot later ;-)

OK.. It took a lot of courage to do this selfie, its something i'm not comfortable with. took some shots but they didn't seem 'whimsical' enough. i hope this selfie makes the cut. :)

Heatmapped FlipMode Weekend Edition : ) Check out the Lightbox (L)

I've been to this restaurant over a dozen times...but never thought to shoot it before? This is the ceiling right as you enter the door. As I was taking pics, I was staring up at the ceiling amazed by the lines and artwork that I never noticed. When I finally stopped snapping shots, I looked back down and saw a bunch of the staff & several other people now staring up at the roof! One of the waitresses came up to me afterwards and said that she was initially wondering what the hell I was looking up and taking pictures of. She laughed and said that she never noticed all of the stuff right above her head : )

Tip of the hat to those of you who've asked about it recently and got me motivated to work on this again!

I still have to update the import scripts, so, new photos aren't being added a this time, but, that's my next priority.

Here's another sneak-peak of the heatmap feature that's coming soon to Railfan Atlas.

This map shows the locations of the 50,000 most popular geotagged railroad photos on Flickr in the Lower 48.

There are obviously lots of folks who don't geotag their photos, but, I suspect this is a pretty good indicator of where train photos are generally getting taken in the US.

Light red, kinda rich. Dark red, very rich.

My Railfan Atlas - railfanatlas.com - project has a few new updates in place, just in time for unwinding this holiday weekend.

First off, there's a new thumbnail view that'll allow you to see all of the images in an area in a nice, large format.

Secondly, the heatmap is now using a palette that's easier to see for colorblind people.

Third, the website is now hosted in New York City instead of San Francisco, so it should be a bit faster for those of you in the Midwest and Eastern US, as well as Europe.

Finally, the location search has been refined a bit to prevent zooming in too far when showing the specified place.

There are now over 1.25 million images from nearly 26,000 photographers on the Railfan Atlas map; appreciate the feedback and effort many of you have put into getting your images in the database.

took this older image from 3 years ago and did another Ravens slide

this view of the monument is from a 2nd floor corner window in the Walters Art Museum

today the Ravens will be playing the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship and the right to play in the Super Bowl in 2 weeks - another nervous afternoon ahead!

Dan suggested that Railfan Atlas would be more helpful in the field if it indicated where all shots were taken, not just a few thumbnails, which sent me down the path of getting heatmaps implemented.

This is a screenshot of the heatmap feature, which is still in its infancy (it's not live on the website right now), but is showing some pretty cool potential. The brighter an area, the more train photos have been taken there.

For those of you familiar with the area, I don't think there are any big surprises here - people take more photos in areas where there are more trains (or cool power, as seen around the Minnesota Commercial).
