He sat on a log intently staring into the leaves on the right. What, if anything, he saw, I could not determine.
Winner of this year's 100m.
On the last leg of a recent trip to Finland staying at Parikkala on the Russian border, we headed out early one morning (4am). No more than half a mile driving away from our lodge, we encountered a small flock of Common Cranes in a field. I was driving but thankfully the camera was primed and ready as these magnificent birds were spoked by the car and took-off into the wind.
I managed a series of take-off shots of this bird. I can tell you it needed some runway! Light wasn’t great but the Sony A1 dealt with it!
He was born 30 December 1869 at Swanmore, county of Hampshire, England.
In 1876 he emigrated to Canada with his family and settled on a farm near the hamlet of Egypt, south of Sibbald Point on Lake Simcoe.
Leacock was educated at Upper Canada College, Toronto. He completed a degree in modern languages at the University of Toronto in 1891.
Inspired by Thorstein Veblen’s The Theory of the Leisure Class, he enrolled at the University of Chicago, receiving a Ph.D. in political economy and political science under Veblen in 1903.
This is one of the two Western Bluebird fledglings that hatched in my backyard this spring. He’s fluttering his wings while waiting for dad to arrive with a tasty morsel.
Western Bluebirds are small thrushes that usually perch upright. They are stocky with thin, straight bills and fairly short tails.
Male Western Bluebirds are shiny blue above with rust-orange extending from a vest on the breast onto the upper back. Females are gray-buff with a pale orange wash on the breast and blue tints to the wings and tail. The throat is blue in males and gray-buff in females, and the lower belly is whitish.
These birds are highly social, and usually feed in flocks during the non-breeding season. They hunt for terrestrial insects by dropping to the ground from a low perch. Western Bluebirds also frequently feed on berries in trees. Western Bluebirds rely on trees both for nesting cavities and hunting perches, and also perch on fences and utility lines.

He's very focussed on the task in hand, and in the view finder. Seen in South Africa's Kruger National Park.
All the critters were on hawk watch this morning as a Cooper's hawk was hanging out at the feeders today. This little red squirrel had a good hiding spot.
Thank you so much for taking a look, the favs and comments.
Oz: Pia...why did you wear high heels? I told you we were getting the tree!
What an absolutely gorgeous sim to find your Christmas tree!

When I would take shots of this male broad-billed hummingbird out front, they would have lots of noise. I use "neat image" everyonce in a while to clean it up.
¡Yo, aún no he aprendido
cómo se montan los costos
de eso que llamamos luz!
Desde luego, no es fácil
conocer los elementos
que entran en tal portento.
Y si hablamos de variables,
de gastos, no de otra cosa,
¿qué se mete en tal cajón?
¿Y de fijos?
Eso que siempre cuesta,
se produzca más o menos,
y que siempre está ahí.
¿Me desglosa, por favor,
ese costo interminable
que incluye a tanto señor?
Yo, aún no he aprendido
si el robo y el latrocinio
también se incluye ahí.
No se ofendan, no señores,
que llevarse un sobresueldo
por sentarse en el consejo
no es robo, es conexión
de una torre con otra
de ese sabido ajedrez
donde sólo los peones
mueven de uno en uno,
y su costo bien se ve.
No así el costo fijo,
oculto entre no sé qué.
Our Mighty Little Hunter, the male American Kestrel was successful once again. It was a very windy day and I was surprised I got this shot off as he was having a hard time flying with the Vole half his size. After zipping around in circles and me getting dizzy trying to follow him, he landed in a nearby tree where he ate his kill. Bucks County PA.
... he more than makes up in personality.
Another favourite photo of a little owl from a weekend at West Country Wildlife Photography with help and guidance from Bob of Natures Photos www.naturesphotos.co.uk/
Hope you like this l/e. A lovely peaceful place.
This is only 1km from my house in a beautiful ancient wood. Its very quiet and very few people go to this part of it. A great place to practice long exposure photos or lose yourself.
Thanks for all your kind words and favourites.
Hope you like it.
Keep Well!
Pat.
Im just amazed how this pic has taken off. I wasnt sure if it was good enough but thats always me as its impossble to judge your own photos really. Im struggling now to catch up with all of you but bear with me as Ill get to you!!
For your info. I used a 6 stop variable nd filter. Took the photo at F7.1 in app prio. Shutter speed came up at one eight of a second. Going up 6 stops gave me 8 seconds shutter speed. Put the camera in Shutter prio at 8 secs.Switched to manual focus. Screwed on filter and took the photo. Its not bad though there is a bit of a colour cast but I like that. Should have covered the lens better.
Heres a great vid from "the man" Graham Haughton. Super!
