Cragg Vale
A circular walk of around 3.5 miles takes you along the road by the side of Blackstone Edge Reservoir, a track then turns left away from the road taking you to White Holme Reservoir. This photo was taken on that section of track, looking towards Farther Hill, Round Hill and Little Moor. The walk continues to Little Hazzels Reservoir before cutting back along a very cold and windy ridge and back to Blackstone Edge.
Not many weeks ago this scene was covered in purple heather, that’s now all gone and we have the autumn tones, perhaps it will be white before long.
Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

I’m standing in Calderdale in West Yorkshire but the reservoir, and the one behind it called Warland Reservoir are actually in the Rochdale area of Greater Manchester. On the right of the photo is Bird Nest Hill, which sits on Turley Holes and Higher House Moor, collectively known as White Holme Moss. The purple heather of summer has now given way to the browns of autumn and winter.
The two reservoirs sit at 382.5 meters or 1255 feet above sea level.
Thank you for the visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

The word 'sandboy' brings to mind images of a child playing on the beach, making sand-castles and the like. In fact, sandboy was the name of those who delivered sand to public houses, theatres and homes in the 18th and 19th centuries. Children were used in that trade, but most sandboys were adults. This use of 'boy' has frequently been used for low-status male workers, as in tea-boy, barrow-boy, house-boy etc..
The use that the sand was put to was as a crude floor covering - a precursor to sawdust in what later became known as 'spit and sawdust' establishments - public spitting wasn't then reviled as it is now.
Sandboys would probably have received a ale as part of their payment which made the happy!!
The following is information from Richard Symonds -
This pub must have been built sometime between 1843 and 1861 as the Tythe map 1st edn of 1843 gives only a meadow (property 838) of 3 roods 19 poles, the property of William Pooler Esq, and the 1861 Eves Census gives the same property (then numbered 492 on the map) as the Nutley Hall public house and premises owned and run by John Bailey.
I have also caught sight of a retailer’s licence issued 11th October 1865 granting permission for Alfred George Ryder, “residing in a house known by the sign of the Nutley Hall in Reigate” to carry on the trade of “retailer of beer, cider or perry, sprits, foreign wine, and tobacco in the said premises being all adjoining or contiguous to each other and situate in one place, and held together for the same trade, such house and premises being rented at £20 per annum”. The cost of the licence, for one year, being 12 pounds, 7 shillings and nine pence farthing.
The Petty Sessional Report for 1892 gives it as a “Fully licensed house owned and tied for trade to Messrs E Barnes of Horsham, brewers”, and gives the licensee as “R Stedman who resides on the premises. The inn is frequented by artisans.”

I know it's a hazzel if you live in snow all the time, but for me the last few days have been so fun.
Walking around Lake Ana in the blowing snow and taking photos while freezing. And, I met a new Flickr contact. A kindred soul out shooting in the snow.

Hassel Island’s layered history–1000-400BC prehistory, Taino settlement, British occupation, Danish occupation, multi-cultural farming and commercial settlements, US Naval occupation–physically intact.
At the time of ‘slipway’ construction, Hassel acreage was a peninsula of St. Thomas, forming an “orkanhullet,” or hurricane hole, for ships in busy Charlotte Amalie harbor. The protected slipway, called Careening Wharf by the Hazzel family in the early 1800s, joined the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company facilities, 3 coaling docks which accepted coal from the US for distribution, another working marine railway and a floating drydock in servicing vessels at this strategically placed and mostly neutral distribution center for European and US goods. At times the harbor side of the island was almost entirely ‘wharfed,’
The St Thomas Marine Repair facility was built according to a plan laid out by Mr. Matthew. It opened for commercial use in 1844. The original facility consisted of a steam-powered winch, repair shop, storage buildings, and a residence.
Inside building in this image is the winch and walking beam engine powering the winch, built in Hamburg by the Bolton Co. in the
1840s, are well preserved. Bolton’s cast iron steam engines were known for durability and silence. Still
on-site are the original wood fed boilers that drove the steam engine and the smokestack.
