Handwired briolette necklaces

Some of you (who haven't been bored to tears by this Germanium Fever of mine) may remember this guy. Señor Fuzzy. This was my initial Fuzz Face pedal testbed. Equipped with sockets so I could test out transistor pairings. I tried it with some silicon transistors in Q2 that had a much higher gain than the germanium transistor in Q1 and it sounded kind of horrible. Here it is as I tried it over the last couple of days with some 2N5087 transistors to see how Q2 sounded using silicon in the mid-200 range.

You know, I had a photography teacher years ago who used to accuse me of trying to, "Reinvent the Wheel" all the time. Because I couldn't just read about something and move on. I have to go try to make all the mistakes made in the past to see for myself how things work. It's probably a learning disability of some kind, but it's the only way I learn. Anyway, this is kind of like that. I could probably read about someone else's unsuccessful idiocy, but I've gotta do the dummy-work on my own.

BTW, my wife had to help me find this. It's a month old and I already had no idea where I'd put it.

The "Hendrix" mod of replacing the 470R with a 1K really jacks up the gain of Q1. BTW, I obviously skip replacing the 8.2K resistor with an 18K. No need to jack up the gain of Q2 when I'm running hot silicon. I had a 77 hFE AC128 in Q1 and a 246 hFE silicon 2N5087 in Q2 and it was still a raging fuzz machine. I could clean it up by backing down the volume at the guitar, but not with the Fuzz control. Still too bright, too. Had to mess with the treble bleed cap arrangement. A 500 picofarad cap across the Collector and Base of Q2 truncated the silicon brittleness. That seemed to make Q2 just a louder-maker, which is very useful, IMO.

I may be getting to a really cool intersection here. Most AC128 transistors fall into the 60-85 hFE range. So getting a really hot one for Q2 is tough and even getting one hot enough for the standard circuit at Q1 can be trying. Not to mention that the high gain germaniums are frequently hiss machines.

But with the, "Hendrix" mod effectively lowering the bar for Q1 and these 2N5087 silicon transistors turning out to be usable for Q2 (when their response is truncated a bit), this turns into a pretty viable project that can be repeated consistently without spending a fortune on rare transistors.

These 2N5087 transistors are about 50 cents each. The AC128 germanium transistors are closer to being $4 or so each, but that's still pretty reasonable. These pedals can happen at a pretty decent price point if I decide to build some. And of course, this lesson can be used to make the Tone Benders a little meaner, too.

It's kind of amazing how there's an invisible line you cross and you're in Fuzzmax territory, but the inverse is also obviously true. Like, I switched to a 65 hFE AC128 in Q1 and suddenly I had to use both the neck and bridge pickup to get a real fuzz sound. "Not enough gain, Jefe!" But it's really easy to cross into the, "TOO MUCH GAIN, JEFE!!!" territory, too.

This seems to be a very interesting way to build these. They don't mask the sound of your instrument or amp, they clean up when you back off the Volume pot in your guitar and yet you aren't invested in rare transistors and you aren't packing a pair of heat-sensitive germanium transistors that can interact in horrible ways as the temperature changes. Having one more stable component helps make this more useful, as well as more practical. Sounds great, too.

A vast intricate procession of jet black crystals ignites our first formal gothic necklace design. The most beautiful shades of baby pink and light citrus green make this Ian St Gielar necklace so so attractive. Double stranded pink beads, separated with smaller goldtone beads and highlighted with two large barley twist style stones make up the necklace part which is finished with a renaissance style Russian gold plated hook and tail fastening. The large cartouche (or pendant) is the usual marvel of tiny handwired Murano glass beads this time in a delicate light citrus green dotted with pink and green flowers and pink art glass dangles. There is one large faux moonstone or faux opal cabochon cut stone which glistens like golden confetti and to finish there are the most delightful tiny striped red, white and blue art glass beads forming a trail over the cartouche. Truly wonderful and a feast for the eyes!

Rich Opulent Style! Our newest necklace is made with such detail and exudes brilliance and luxury. Features an intoxicating blend of "golden shadow" Swarovski Austrian Crystal, "champagne" fire polished crystals, both "bronze" and "champagne" Miyuki glass seed beads and quality 14k gold filled lobster claw clasp and extender chain. Let the abundance of handcrafted detail finish your special bridal look.

This particular design is truly one of my favorites. The color is very neutral and can easily be worn again and again. The shimmering crystals reflect the light at every angle and would certainly compliment a "v" shaped neckline.

Paul Cochrane Tim - handwired version from 2004

This is the second RCA portable transistor radio. It has leather case with polished aluminum front, the stitching are deteriorated which is somewhat common in this type of cabinet.

The handwired metal chassis has seven socketed transistors that required an RCA battery pack, type VS301, which is a 9V unit with a 3V tap.

For these receivers the manufacturer used the same cabinet and chassis design as the Olympic 447. In this photo I show two versions with six (blue/ivory) and eight (gray/ivory) transistors respectively. The metal chassis are handwired and requires four "D" batteries.

I modeled it after my early 70's flat deck skateboard.

I've spent most of life staying away from pedals altogether. Plug and play, baby!

Something happened last year.... I wanted something to drive a couple Bassman's a little harder during solos but didn't want to lose the tone of the Fender amps. It all started with the Duncan pickup booster, then the Timmy and it all took off from there.

The Super hard-on showed up for a visit a couple days ago. It's everything I have been looking for in a clean boost.

Big table top/portable radio that looks like TV set. (24 X 19 X 12 cm.)

Well into their sixties, some manufacturers in México continued to use the metal chassis wiring by hand instead of the printed circuit, I think because it was cheaper in materials and workmanship .

Oh my goodness, what can we say about this one! Ian St Gielar for Stanley Hagler should say it all but we'll do our best to elaborate and give this marvelous necklace the write up it deserves. Let's start with the colours - magnificent deep coral red art glass beads, triple stranded and exquisitely combined with twisted goldtone double stranded chains brought together at the ends with Russian gold plated foliage collars and a traditional hook and tail fastening. Let's move on to the deliciously opulent cartouche in shades of red and gold, individually handwired Murano glass beads, flowers and Russian gold plated leaves all delicateley secured to a beautiful Russian gold plated filigree backing. Oh we missed something - the face - the coveted and very rare gold plated "Asian Princess" face nestles in the centre of the cartouche looking serene and noble. Is that enough? Well, there's more - An art glass drop very much in the Japanese style in a soft shade of cranberry, decorated with sinuous, flowing, Art Nouveau like lillies completes this stunning necklace which is designed to be worn with the cartouche and drop to one side. Delicious, desireable and a piece of art!

So the minute I strap on the respirator and start cutting Garolite the mail dude knocks on the door with packages from places elsewhere that need a signature. Which is cool. I've been waiting on these parts. But why is it always when you've just strapped into the bondage gear associated with not dying of a respiratory collapse that the doorbell rings?

This particular design has a nice weighty/textural feel as numerous pearls and crystal are woven into a snug chevron pattern. There are a lot of pearls and crystals in this particular piece. Artful, feminine and enveloping all that is classy!!!

One of the nicest, most transparent and crunchiest overdrive pedal I’ve owned. Handwired and handmade in the USA. Can be used as a clean transparent boost or a perfect second stage boost with another light OD pushing it.

Here is a gut shot of the untouched chassis.

This guitar was an X-Mas gift from my pal and shopmate, Dan Erlewine.

That's one of two Bassman Ten's in the stable. Say what you will, these things are the last of the cool handwired Fender amps.

Here is a Masco amp from the late 1940's that came in for a refresh. It is in good shape for an amp that is over 60 years old. It sports a pair of coke bottle 6L6 power tubes and 7f7 preamp tubes which are a loctal version of the 6sl7 tube. It needed all caps replaced, a new 5y3 rectifier tube, a new cord, several wires re-attached and a good cleaning. A very nice piece of history.

Not sure about this one but it is very similar to the Ibanez sg's. It has a beefy neck and the humbuckers are actually single coils inside the humbucker cover. No name, just Japan stamped on the neck plate. A very nice player and it sounds great too.

Expect a flurry of compliments when you wear our new bridal earrings. Beautiful "Golden Shadow" (that awesome champagne shade) faceted teardrops sway from brilliant hand-woven gold shadow clusters. Very formal, festive and certain to reflect the light at every angle. This color coordinates well with 14k gold jewelry. The sparkle is tremendous!

Standard American shite...lol. Seriously though, I am an sg fanatic and this one is the nicest one I have ever played.

Here is a fender champ circuit that I built with the silverface tone controls. I used a 6sl7 preamp tube instead of a 12ax7 as I prefer the thicker, rounder tones the octal preamp tube gives. This little amp really surprised me with its tone, of all the amps I have built, I like this one the best. The cleans are very warm and chimey and the overdrive is stunning. It reinforces my conviction that the simplist circuits always sound the best. When I use my holy grail reverb pedal with this amp the tones sound very similar to a twin reverb.

One of the first transistor radios manufactured in Italy. Beautiful blue plastic cabinet with metalic carrying handle, which folds down to fit on top of the cabinet, dial scale and knob painted on the reverse side and ON/OFF switch placed on top with a tab to activate. It requires six penligth batteries, but also can be powered with an adapter to the AC line, Model A-725, or in the car with the Model S-725 adapter.

Perhaps for being one of the first, the chassis has six RCA plug in germanium transistors ( 2N412, (2) 2N410 and (3) 2N408 ), instead of classics european transistors. Also, the chassis is composed of two modules: one circuit board for Converter, F.I. and detector; and a metal handwired board for audio frecuencies (Pre and Power Amplification).

Every one of these first gen timelapsers was a labor of love, taking countless hours to complete. They were deployed by the dozens. The alarm clock buzzer is wired to an optoisolator which lets the tiny current activate an input to the ATOM microcontroller. The chip turns on a relay to turn off the alarm and reset for the next day then another relay shorts across the cameras power switch, it waits for powerup then another relay shorts across the shutter button contacts. After another short delay, the cam power relay turns it off to wait for the alarm again
