Dad and Roger in the exhibition hall. Seriously like two kids in a candy store. The hall was a sea of older gentlemen in sweatpants and hats with call letters. I wanted to buy dad a t-shirt that said, "SOME HAMS KNOW DIT FROM DAH".
One of the local ham radio clubs particpated in a contest and invited others to come in. I'm not licensed but went with someone who was and they allowed him to man the equipment. He had a blast, making contacts in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia as well as watching other contacts being made in Africa and various other states.
My Dad was a HAM radio operator - sort of the archetypal geek. His initials were even H.A.M. He loved electronics and talking to people from all over the world - he would have absolutely LOVED the Internet.
I am amazed at the amount of equipment (both sides of the room) it took to transmit and receive signals when this was taken in the early 50s. When I was a kid, we always had a giant radio tower in our backyard. Sometimes I can still hear him, "Calling CQ, calling CQ..."
He died when I was just 12, but he has influenced almost every aspect of my life and I think of him every day. It is amazing how much like him I am, especially as an adult...

A contest where ham radio operators compete to get the most contacts from around the world. This man is operating a Begali morse code key, a pair of plates between his thumb and index finger (in blue) moving about 1/64th of an inch before signalling either a dot or a dash in Morse code. The device is weighted down by a 1kg ingot, so there is no chance that device play will lead to a wrong input. Apparently, a skilled operator can signal up to hundred or so complete words per minute.
By the time this picture was taken at around noon, they had been up since 1am the previous night, have had over 200 contacts, some as far away as Perth. Still, there were not in contention for the lead, with other groups ahead at over 500 contacts.
