“Detail from Purdy’s Wharf Tower II in Halifax, Nova Scotia, showing reflections of the adjacent Purdy’s Wharf Tower I in the glass curtain wall. Purdy’s Wharf is an iconic postmodern office complex built over the water at the edge of Halifax Harbour, with Tower I completed in 1985 and the taller Tower II in 1989. The paired glass façades and harbour-edge setting have made the development a recognizable element of the city’s skyline and waterfront district, blending commercial functions with panoramic views of the harbour.” (ChatGPT. 01/23/2026)

The Halifax Public Gardens were founded by the Nova Scotia Horticultural Society on this site in 1841. It did not consist of more than flower beds and vegetables for its first few decades. It was not until the City of Halifax directed land on the north side of the existing garden to be laid out with flower beds that the Public Gardens undertook a more formal structure. In 1867, the year that Canada was formed as a Dominion, the Public Gardens were opened by the Chief Justice of the province of Nova Scotia.
