In the 90’ties a subcultur developed in the Netherlands called “gabber” these gabbers listned to fast paced EDM called “hardcore” and many raves popped up and for a decade these parties became huge, in my opinion it is thanks to those parties we now have the big EDM festivals like defqon!!
I made these because I builded 2 big hardcore label logos and was so into the gabber zone I just had to build ‘em ;

This detail of a striking piece of institutionalized street art is created by Super A (Stefan Thelen). It’s a tribute to the ‘gabber house’ youth culture. This was a localized (Rotterdam and later Den Haag) variant of the house music main stream.
More information about it is with the prevous shot ( here ). I posted that image of the complete piece in B&W 'cause I like the gritty urban feel is has. I've posted this one in colour to show the way this "photorealistisc" street art looks like up-close. Notice those gradients and the way reflection and shadows are rendered. And of course the fascinating way the rough concrete texture of the 'Eindwand' of the old viaduct / station works as a 'canvas'. Another interesting thing is that in street culture - brands like Nike with its characteristic swish logo are very important. And In the gabber house scene the Australian track suit was the thing..
And this made me think about 'Nike urbanism" - the way this brand invaded and used street culture to develop a self serving and influential type of urban redevelopment. This striking piece of institutionalized street art is created by Super A (Stefan Thelen). It’s a tribute to the ‘gabber house’ youth culture. This was a localized (Rotterdam and later Den Haag) variant of the house music main stream.
But why is it there ?
It’s a part of the urban redevelopment project of the Hofpleinviaduct which is an element of the broader Hofbogen master plan. This plan aims to turn the not demolished part of the Hofplein railway station and the adjacent 2,5 km long viaduct of the closed ‘Hofplein’ railway line into a recreational and cultural hotspot, with brasseries, art galleries, shops, workshops for artists and office space for creative professionals…… topped off with a narrow but 2,5 km long park on the former rail bed. With of course all the beneficial effects on the surrounding living quarter (liveability, real estate prices etc). And the artwork is meant to lively up the end of the viaduct / station, a blind and rather rough looking wall called ‘Eindwand’ (~ closing wall) that used to be a part of the demolished part of the Hofplein station. An internal wall became an external one.
The art work has of course not only decorative but also cultural significance – it means to flag things like ‘young’, ‘different ‘, ‘daring’ and ‘against the grain’, important values for any urban redevelopment project with an arty twist ;-) In 2013 the ‘Opperclaes’ art gallery (one of the new facilities in the Hofpleinviaduct) commissioned four artist to create artworks on the ‘Eindwand’ which will be there for three months and then painted over for a new one. The ‘gabber’ work was ready on June 27 and will be there through August.
When the second part of the Luchtsingel is ready, it will connect the Schieblok with the Hofplein viaduct. The first part was featured in the prevous posts: here and here
‘Hakkuh & strak staan’ is a text book that in the nineties helped professionals working in the youth service, in community policing and in the municipalities to grasp and where necessary deal with the ‘gabber-house’ youth culture. It had its problematic sides due to public health issues (use of XTC and other stimulating drugs) and public order ones too (sometimes aggressive behaviour, illegal dance parties). ‘Hakkuh’ (~chopping) refers to the specific dancing style of the gabbers (check out: here on You Tube ). ‘Strak staan’ (being (in)tense) refers to the state of mind when using XTC like drugs. .

Sometimes life plays its funny little tricks, that's how I regot this photo. I started out my EDM career late 1995 as a photographer for Strobe Magazine which focussed on the booming hardhouse scene in the Netherlands, better known as Gabber and known for shaved heads and training suits. This scene basically evolved into the biggest post-war youth movement of this country, which peaked at around '97/'98.
From working for this magazine I worked hard on building the empire now known as Rudgr.com ;-). Sadly enough I have only very few images from that period since it was still pre-digital and slides tend to get lost easily.
The roots for that famous Gabberscene were in a sportsvenue called "The Energiehal" in Rotterdam and last year a beautiful documentary came out on Vimeo "Hard voor de Hal" on the rise and fall (destruction) of this special place - vimeo.com/48393334. Somehow though I managed to miss this incredible video until last week and, sadly, I had no photo archives from this place.
Only three days later a message found its way into my mailbox from a French producer/performer calledDrMacabre. It took me a while but I remembered him from the days of the Energiehal. He had a photo-CD lying around with my photos on which I must have sent or given him 15 years ago. Since my website, which was printed on it, still worked he easily traced me here to this page.
He Wetransferred me the images (which are in a little know digital slide format called PCD) and to my huge surprise it contained two hands full of photos from the Energiehal, taken on the New Years Eve '98. How about that!
Feel free to spread these around if you have good memories of this hardhouse temple.

From working for this magazine I worked hard on building the empire now known as Rudgr.com ;-). Sadly enough I have only very few images from that period since it was still pre-digital and slides tend to get lost easily.
The roots for that famous Gabberscene were in a sportsvenue called "The Energiehal" in Rotterdam and last year a beautiful documentary came out on Vimeo "Hard voor de Hal" on the rise and fall (destruction) of this special place - vimeo.com/48393334. Somehow though I managed to miss this incredible video until last week and, sadly, I had no photo archives from this place.
Only three days later a message found its way into my mailbox from a French producer/performer calledDrMacabre. It took me a while but I remembered him from the days of the Energiehal. He had a photo-CD lying around with my photos on which I must have sent or given him 15 years ago. Since my website, which was printed on it, still worked he easily traced me here to this page.
He Wetransferred me the images (which are in a little know digital slide format called PCD) and to my huge surprise it contained two hands full of photos from the Energiehal, taken on the New Years Eve '98. How about that!
Feel free to spread these around if you have good memories of this hardhouse temple.

Sometimes life plays its funny little tricks, that's how I regot this photo. I started out my EDM career late 1995 as a photographer for Strobe Magazine which focussed on the booming hardhouse scene in the Netherlands, better known as Gabber and known for shaved heads and training suits. This scene basically evolved into the biggest post-war youth movement of this country, which peaked at around '97/'98.

Jaarlijks overlijden er wereldwijd 800.000 kinderen aan de gevolgen van diarree en om dat aantal terug te dringen, zetten 3FM en het Rode Kruis zich van 18 t/m 24 december vanuit Leeuwarden in om zoveel mogelijk geld in te zamelen voor deze stille ramp.
