Rather than tear things apart during this month's 'Hack Session', the plan was to have participants work on some projects for the Innovation Lab. We ended up with a pretty young group of participants but went forward with the plans anyhow. These youngsters set out solving problems, designing parts and assembling items with only sporadic instructions. It was a little more chaotic than planned, but most everything came together in this gratifying evening.

Hack for Social Impact is a tech non-profit organization dedicated to solving real-world challenges by connecting engineers and data scientists with non-profits, NGOs, and civic organizations. We specialize in curating high-impact problem statements and fostering post-hackathon collaboration to ensure projects achieve real-world implementation. The 2025 hackathon teams are partnering with frontline NGOs across five challenge areas to unlock data, track impact, and scale operations.

Point Blue was invited to present the challenge for the "climate" category. The challenge we presented was: Unlocking biodiversity datasets with natural-language tools and impact tracking to steer habitat funding.

A small coastal observation post by the coast at Hackness, very near the Martello tower. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and has three small observation loopholes on the faces of the post facing north towards Flotta, west towards Longhope and east towards Scapa Flow. The post would likley have been constructed to watch over the defensive boom nearby.

It has been mentioned on comments in Canmore that the loopholes would be too small for observation and the structure may be a pillbox. I believe this to be incorrect. While some observation posts have large loopholes or apertures to observe from, they would be vulnerable to fire and shrapnel; and as the occupants would likely be civilian Coast Watchers (CW) they had no need for a position form which to fight from. The loopholes are neither large enough nor placed at the right position to fire a rifle from, never mind a larger weapon.

God intervened and hacked us with some serious lightning.

The problem with these devices is that you really have to hack them to set things up in any custom fashion. Most people just won't do that.
