Hacker-Festzelt is one of the most popular tents at the Oktoberfest in Munich. Even before it opened, at 10 am, there was a long line of kurt lederhosen clad men - clearly seen in this photo - waiting to get in!

This tent is one of the largest at the festival with seating space for 6,900 guests and as the name implies they're sponsored by and serve beer from the Hacker-Pschorr brewery.

5. Tabblo. This is kind of an unusual one. Maybe not so much of a hack, but it sure feels like one. Tabblo is a photosharing site that allows you the ability to customize the feel, layout, tone and design of your photo page. The yin and the yang of Flickr is that everyone's pages look the same. On the one hand this gives Flickr a very elegant, almost like a virtual art gallery or museum feel. On the other hand sometimes people want more customization over how their photos are presented. Some companies like SmugMug make this customization part of how they diferentiate from Flickr. Flickr is torn because while you might like to give users more control over the design of the photos, if you're not careful, the next thing you know the place ends up looking like MySpace.

Enter Tabblo. Tabblo uses the Flickr API to import your photos into their site and then allows you the ability to design a page however you like. The nice thing about Tabblo is that unlike SmugMug the site is free and with a direct Flickr import function makes it super easy to design special custom pages using your Flickr photos. Here's a tabblo with some of my shots from New Orleans last year.

So, the main news headlines in the UK is the phone hacking saga of press reporters.

Did they hack the phones of murder victims and their families?

Did they hack the phones of celebrities?

One thing its made me realise is that I'd make a very bad reporter.

I really don't care that much about celebrities

and I can't for the life of me imagine what gossip I'd get out of phone hacking the families of murder victims.

This is a save game hack that I've been working on as a debugging and experimentation tool.

It uses a savegame buffer overflow exploit to bootstrap some C code which it loads off or an SRAM-backed SPI EEPROM emulator (the FPGA in the back). The C code can modify the game's code or data, install hooks, load/dump memory, etc.

When the C code returns, the game resumes running. The image you see on the bottom screen was drawn by the game after my hook code drew to the top screen and returned.

Hacker: "originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe", according to The Jargon File.

I think this shutter was made by a hacker... who use the axe to paint it, too.

Since the first 7 points of the hacker definition can also be used to describe myself, I bought this fancy toy to restore the original hacker work. After all, a sander called "Mouse" is perfect for a hacker... the problem is I'm always trying to turn the wheel ;-)

I've a heavy duty sander (8 kg!) which is good to sand the keel of an aircraft carrier (if you can find a wood one), but it is not very appropriate for small details.

I've seen this small sander at our local version of Home Depot for 35 euro, but it was out of stock and the clerk suggested me to visit the other shop, 50 km away. Before to waste a couple of hours and 7,50 euro of gasoline I asked him to check the inventory on their network, and he stared at me just like I've demanded a spare hadron collider. So I came home, check on eBay and found the same sander in Rome for 1 euro less, shipping included.

Next time I'll check eBay before to go to the shop... so I'll save another 15 km.

Now I guess you want to know the strobist infos...

- lens: SMC Pentax-DA 16-45mm F4.0 ED/AL

- flash on the left: Hanimex TZ1 in tele mode with standard diffuser - 0.13 GBP (yes! 0.16 euro!) on eBay

- left trigger: cactus like

- flash on the right: Vivitar 3500 Thiristor in wide mode, without diffuser - this one far more expensive, 10.50 GBP (13.26 euro) on eBay

- right trigger: ebay optical slave

See the setup below for the flash positions.

If you want to see the shutter "before" version, it had the same ugly color of the rest of this door.

- ottica: SMC Pentax-DA 16-45mm F4.0 ED/AL

- flash a sinistra: Hanimex TZ1 in modo tele mode with diffusore standard - 0.13 GBP (si! 0.16 euro!) su eBay

- trigger a sinistra: tipo cactus

- flash a destra: Vivitar 3500 Thiristor in modo wide, senza diffusore - questo molto più costoso, 10.50 GBP (13.26 euro) on eBay

- trigger a destra: servoflash ottico preso su ebay

Guardatevi il setup più sotto per le posizioni dei flash.

Se volete sapere com'era lo scuro "prima", aveva lo stesso colore angoscioso del resto di questa porta.
