48s36 sits out on its own at the Cootamundra Yards, with a custom-made stack cover!
Cootamundra, New South Wales, Australia.
A day out following Puffing Billy, travelling through the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, hauled by Steam Locomotive NA Class 12A.
12A; Built in 1912 and painted Canadian Pacific red & dark brown, this locomotive was issued to the Colac to Crowes line, but over the years saw service on all four lines. It was withdrawn from service in 1954 at Moe and sent to Newport Workshops for storage where it remained until 1972. After overhaul at Ballarat North Workshops, it was brought to Belgrave in 1973 where it saw continuous service until withdrawn in 1982 for a complete rebuild. It was returned to service in 1992 in close to its early 1940s condition with all-over Black livery. It will be returned to its post WWI condition with low bunker, narrow ash chute, steel cowcatcher and Canadian Pacific livery.
Belgrave, Victoria, Australia

Not sure why I've never printed or published this image. My recollection is that in August 2004, the opportunity arose to do "waiting list operating lists" and instead of pay, 5 lists earned an extra week of annual leave. Most surgeons weren't interested but given that the days were numbered for the Jitong line, I took a week in August and got from Norwich to Xilinhot with KLM all in 19 hours. A week was spent, riding from Baiqi to Halouku in a brake van, pottering on the pass, meeting the Grumpy Gunzels. The sunrise shot in August was tricky because one had to be up at 0430 as I recall - anyway, the steam gods played ball on this morning and I wandered down from the hotel in Reshui and was fortunate to get a train heading west.

Now, another thing you notice railfanning abroad is that specific parts of the world adopt different styles of train photography. In Australia, for example, a majority of the South Aussies branch of Gunzels Inc. love a good old-fashioned 200mm powershot, as does a large majority of railfans here in Japan, to the point where the train is only a few pixels to the edge of the frame. Now, this is very important to mention: this is NOT me criticising or bad-mouthing how people take photos. In this hobby, there are no rules for taking a train picture; it's purely enjoyable for us railfans. These are purely observations, without any prejudice, that I've made over the years.
So, furthermore, after meeting a kind local gentleman at a level crossing in Kusakabe (who showed us a photo of an EF65-EF64 combo that we watched go past in amazement, without a camera in hand... well, except Cade. But we'll pretend that never happened), showing off his shots, it was time. Truly become one with the railfan culture and zoom baby zoom (an important thing to note, a lot of the Japanese railfans were well equipped with lenses that went well past 200mm), so for us Aussies who max out at 200mm, our Powershots still look wide in comparison. Even this post-production crop is still nowhere near their powershots. But hey, it's just a quirky white boy trying to be a little Japanese. Pictured above is EF210-334 working 2081 goods from Osaka to Fukuoka, approaching the Okayama downtown area.

Best laid plans of trains and gunzels! The plan was to phot Aurizon’s 4176 loaded Snowtown grain train on the Port River Bridge. An immediate problem raised its ugly head: 45kph winds with 60kph gusts raising a small dust storm all over the Port area! So no drones and on to Plan B - find a suitable location without flying dust and grit! Location selected, now where’s the train? Well, for reasons only known to Aurizon and/or ARTC, it’s taking a break at Bishops Loop, most probably because it’s running early! A quick relocation and shot in dreadful light, it was a hot foot back to Osborne when the grainy got the green light! So with Leadfoot on the throttle, we just made it, where I still managed to stuff up the composition splendidly!
This is my best effort for the “Cheese & Gherkin” sandwich of CLF6-G535-CLP8 with 4176 Snowtown to Pelican Point Aurizon grain train, Jan 14, 2023!
