Houghton House, 17th century hunting mansion. Near Ampthill, Bedfordshire

One of the things Wanaka, a town on the South Island of New Zealand, is most famous for is the Wanaka Tree. Basically, it’s a tree that is growing directly out of the lake, seemingly just there with no problem at all. On our trip round the South Island earlier in the year, we visited Wanaka during the middle of a very dull day. No colourful sky, and even the colour of the leaves on the tree was hard to distinguish. I decided to ignore the lack of colour, and focus on the structure of the scene instead. A colourful 'Wanaka Tree' shot will have to wait until another visit...

Taking a walk along the fortress of Hellevoetsluis. This city once was an important naval base and home port of the Dutch naval fleet in the 17th Century. The city's name literally means the Lock at the Foot of Hell, although it is probably not really the etymological origin.

Cloudy skies but a ray of hope hitting the base of the Elizabeth Tower (the clock tower with the bell called 'Big Ben' inside it)

Note for Mr Harp...you can see the weird web structure on the bridges in the foreground...sadly not extra terrestrial. :) or is it??? :)

That might sound like an oxymoron, but I do enjoy being out in days like this. I took this one the same rainy day as the beach shot with the umbrellas. I was, in my mind, willing the man to go stand on the pier, and sure enough, he did.

I was out shooting all day yesterday, for the first time in ages, so wasn't online. Sorry if I've missed some of your images, but I will try to catch up to today's feed.

Can a pier be considered a fence? I'm saying it is :)

Happy Fence Friday!

There's something magical about walking in the rain; it's as if the world around you becomes softer, quieter, and more peaceful.

Glastonbury Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. Founded in the 7th century, enlarged in the 10th. Rebuilt after major fire in the 14th. Then finally disolved during the dissolution of the monasteries around 1539. The bodies of King Arthur and his queen were found interred in the abbey cemetery in 1191 and they were moved to a site of veneration in the main church. According to Giraldus, a medieval historian, there was a leaden cross with the unmistakably specific inscription Hic jacet sepultus inclitus rex Arthurus in insula Avalonia ("Here lies interred the famous King Arthur on the Isle of Avalon" found with the bones. Rumours are that this was a marketing ploy to bring in more money. Either way, Glastonbury is as good a place as any to remember the once and future king.

An Autumnal scene at Loch Ard. A little cloudy and colourless in the sky but the lovely tones in the trees and bushes and that soft focus reflection makes it worth while.

A few weeks ago I posted an Image that I called The Pin and the Pier using this same subject. I set the pin into some rocks and waited for the tide to rise. That shot came after this original exposure and I used it because I liked that the rocks in the foreground had disappeared beneath the incoming tide.

I like to go back through my images periodically to see if something jumps out on a second view that I didn’t see at first. This is one of those images that liked better second time around and in this case I started to appreciate that having foreground interest on a long exposure shot like this actually adds more to the image than it detracts. The rocks don’t feel solid to me they look almost ethereal and ghostly only appearing real where they break out of the mist.

I was also thinking I’d use this image as a monochrome but on reflection I liked the unusual colour the water had turned so I decided to keep the colour in the foreground and just toned down the sky. I’ll probably use both versions at some point so look out for the mono later in the year.

Another from the archives, from a visit to the Peak District...seems a long time ago now...

..In the Isle of Skye, Scottish Inner Hebrides.

I looked at this image long and hard before I decided to process it for posting today. The reason I thought about it so long was because I couldn’t tell if I loved or hated the effect of the blur caused by the weed in the foreground. I was forced to look several times to convince myself that the rocks and the hills are actually in focus and that it wasn’t just a shaky hand making the image look soft. Please let me know if this has the same effect on you so I know it’s not just my eyes. Oh, by the way in case you didn’t recognise it this is Elgol beach on the Isle of Skye.

A very traditional image today of receding posts and the warning beacon belonging to the groins along a beach front.

These are part of the fortifications that protect the sandy shores of the waterfront area of Portobello near Edinburgh. It’s an area I’ve seen images of quite a few times and I took advantage of an opportunity a few weeks ago to give it a go.

The light level was very flat which made for gentle shadows and subtle reflections. I can imagine it would be a delightful spot with which to catch a nice sunrise. However, it is some distance from home so making that journey in time for daybreak would probably involve getting up even earlier than I’m used to. Perhaps someday - but not tomorrow!

btw - The Seagull is not photoshopped on. He actually sat there perfectly for the whole long exposure. What a pro!

This is a another view of a few of the stones that make up the cruciform structure of the Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

I posted a smaller image a few weeks back and this one covers a little more of the stones. The atmosphere was definitively on the moody side and trying to keep the camera lens clean was quite difficult in the wind and rain. As with the previous stones image this was being processed as a monochrome image but I was pleasantly surprised at how warm the tones ended up being so once again I’m going against plan and using the colour version. I hope you enjoy.
