Split Rock, marking a narrows in Lake Champlain, was an ancient boundary between the Algonquin people and their Iroquois neighbors to the south. After the French and Indian wars it became a French-English boundary, and later it marked the line between Quebec and New York before the Revolutionary War. Here it is shown from the New York shore, looking east towards the Green Mountain of Vermont.

The full Flower Moon sets behind Green Mountain with its iconic rock formations known as the Flatirons. The rock making up the Flatirons (Fountain formation) was deposited 300 million years ago by eroded deposits of the ancestral Rocky Mountains. The deposits hardened into sandstones and conglomerates and subsequently tilted at a steep angle during the uplift of the current Rockies 65 million years ago.

The Flower Moon gets its name from Algonquin cultural tradition for its correspondence with the appearance of spring flowers.

I used the photographer’s ephemeris app to find a location where the moon would drop onto the summit go Green Mountain.

... but the temperature was rising during this sunset episode from a mid-day value of -7 F as warmer air was moving in from the west. After 45 minutes at this temperature the camera sounded a bit anemic as mechanical parts began to freeze up.

Hope those of you in the northern and central US have not been adversely effected by the Arctic air that arrived this past week. Hope everyone also had a nice holiday- Christmas or whatever it is you celebrate. I received a gift that I would rather have not gotten- COVID, my first known case, with severe congestion and fever. I'm hoping it starts to wane over the next few days, but if my comments on your posts seem a bit wacky you'll know why ;-)

Nature has endowed the relief of this vast rock formation with incredible colors. In Spanish, the Valle del Arcoiris means "Valley of the Rainbow", a name worthy of this grandiose landscape of red, white, yellow and brown cliffs standing out against the blue sky. This emblematic site of San Pedro de Atacama attracts visitors from all over the world to admire its splendid colors.

Although I hate seeing the leaves depart their branches and miss the daylight as the days get shorter, there are a few things that make up for the seasonal transitions. One is the lower sun angle during the day, which gives a longer period of nice light for photography. Another is the clouds that form over the east slopes of the Rockies when the weather is in transition. The wave clouds such as these over Bear Peak (l) and Green Mountain (r) can provide amazing light shows at sunrise and sunset. The clouds are amazingly dynamic, with their forms changing rapidly, though they stay in place like waves in a stream.

Mountain wave clouds burn like embers above Boulder Colorado after sunset.

Two Nuttall's larkspur flowers dance in unison as an homage to spring in a montane meadow. The blue arms and legs are actually sepals- the petals are the smaller white structures striped with purple. The yellow teeth-like structures are the pollen making stamen.

Same day as preceding photo, from the summit of a nearby trail on a day of changing weather. Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains of Vermont in the distance.

Gorgeous green mountains, all around, nice clear blue sky what more can I ask myself for a place to unwind!

Temperatures went below zero, and Boulder was covered in 11 inches of light powder. Here, from left to right, are Eldorado Canyon State Park, and the two taller peaks, South Boulder Peak and Bear Peak, and then Green Mountain. The Flatirons are at the base of Green Mountain. Eldorado Canyon State Park and the Flatirons are destinations for rock climbers.

It was a bit early for the best autumn color along this section of Vermont's scenic Route 100 when my wife and I were there last month, but it was pretty, nonetheless, with the trees beginning to turn. A four-shot pano offered for Textural Tuesday

Mountain wave/ lenticular clouds on the east slopes of the Colorado Front Range form when strong winds blowing out of the west are deflected by the Rocky Mountains. The moisture in the clouds condenses when forced upward, forming clouds. These clouds appear stationary, but they are quite dynamic, continually forming on the windward side (edge of the blue sky here) and dissipating toward the leeward side. Their inner beauty shows best when the sun is near the horizon at sunrise or sunset (as here). These clouds had particularly nice sharp edges to them.

Thanks for your views, comments and favs.

Occasionally I get lucky and get to watch clouds at sunrise transition through the full deep red (“burgundy”) to orange to yellow color changes. This was such a morning, with the clouds taking on color a full 40 minutes before the sun rose. Matching the colors to names used for their various shades can be a fun exercise (facilitated by web searches of course). This blend of orange and red matches “coquelicot,” taken from vernacular French for the wild corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas) that grace fields in northern Europe. The blue sky provided a lovely complement during this color transition. This morning was relatively warm, right around freezing, with a mild westerly breeze that removed the humid inversion that had given us freezing fog the day before.

I'm feeling in a major rut with naming photos. However, I do love this place. This is the lake on Green Mountain at the Madison County Nature Trail.

A late afternoon view from Okemo Mountain, VT. Lots of snow on the slopes and blue bird skies made for some great early April riding.

The view is looking east (toward NH) about 1/3 down the mountain. Mt. Ascutney can be seen to the right of center near horizon. The distant mountains to the left are in New Hampshire - the hint of white is from the Presidential Range (likely Mount Washington).

Looking forward to a sun-filled weekend of color!

The view of the University of Colorado Boulder campus near sunrise as a winter storm clears off. The campus is arguably on of the most beautiful in the world, with the backdrop of the Flatirons (rock formations made up of the Fountain formation, conglomerate sandstone) and lovely campus buildings built in the style of “Tuscan Vernacular Revival” with native flagstone and red tile roofs.

CU has traditionally had difficulty holding on to some of its most talented faculty who have been lured away by higher salaries and perks from more prestigious universities. However for some, this backdrop has kept them from leaving despite lower pay. We once joked that this is the “$17,000 view” based on the pay raise one colleague turned down to stay in Boulder (this amount would be $53,000 now with inflation adjustment). I’m fairly certain that the mountain biking opportunities have kept another colleague from leaving despite lucrative offers elsewhere.
